A parent can run Family Link on an iPhone, but it cannot supervise a child’s iPhone or iPad.

Can Family Link control a child’s iPhone or iPad?
No. Family Link’s iPhone and iPad app is for the parent’s management tasks; it does not turn a child’s iPhone or iPad into a supervised Family Link device. Google says that “iPhones, iPads, and computers other than Chromebooks can’t be supervised with Family Link.” The child device must be an eligible Android device, Chromebook, or compatible Fitbit. That distinction matters in mixed-device families: the parent’s phone does not determine which service can control the child’s device. Map each child’s devices and accounts, then choose controls that actually apply to them.

How the time and app limits differ
Screen Time: scheduled downtime and configurable limits
Screen Time can schedule Downtime, set limits for individual apps or categories, and specify apps or contacts that remain allowed. Limits do not invariably lock an app as soon as time runs out: Apple says they can be ignored by default once reached. For scheduled downtime, a parent can enable Block at Downtime to prevent restricted apps from opening. Apple explains these options in its Screen Time scheduling guide.
Family Link: limits apply separately to each device
Family Link offers daily limits, bedtime or downtime, and limits for individual apps on supported Android and Chromebook devices. The daily device limit applies separately to each device, rather than pooling a child’s allowed time across all their devices. System apps cannot be assigned app limits. Google says app time limits require Android 7 or later, or ChromeOS 83 or later; see Google’s guide to setting device and app limits.

Content, services, and safety controls
Apple’s controls
Screen Time includes content ratings, app and website access controls, privacy settings, communication controls, and features such as Communication Safety. Which options are available can depend on the child’s age, region, and software version. Apple’s current setup information describes updated controls for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS 27; older systems can continue with the previous experience. Family Link can manage aspects of a child’s Google Account, app approvals and blocking, Google Play restrictions, and settings for Chrome, Search, and YouTube. Location features are available for eligible devices. Google Play purchase approval applies only to purchases made through Google Play billing, and content filters do not guarantee that restricted material will be absent from search results or direct links. Setup requirements to check first
- For Screen Time: The child needs an Apple account in the family’s Family Sharing setup, and a parent or guardian manages controls from an Apple device. Check software compatibility because features vary by version and region. Start with Apple’s Screen Time setup page.
- For Family Link: The parent needs a Google Account and the Family Link app or eligible web settings; the child needs a supported device and account setup. Google’s setup documentation says the parent and child must live in the same country for account management. See Google’s setup requirements.
How to choose in a mixed-device household
- List the child’s devices and accounts. Separate Apple devices from Android devices and Chromebooks; note which accounts and services the child uses on each.
- Match controls to each device. Use Screen Time for supported Apple devices and Family Link for eligible Android or Chromebook devices. Do not assume either service supervises every device in the household.
- Check the specific control you need. Confirm the relevant OS version, region, account eligibility, and whether the setting blocks access or merely sets a limit that can be ignored.
- Review the result on the child’s device. Verify that schedules, app restrictions, approvals, and location options behave as intended for that device and account.
What neither service guarantees
These tools provide device and account controls, not a guarantee that every route to inappropriate material is blocked. Their documented features do not replace conversations with a child or checking the settings and services on each device they use.
