Short answer: Apple says Safari can deliver up to five more hours of video streaming than Chrome. That is a maximum, workload-specific claim—not a guaranteed five-hour increase for every MacBook, browser task or owner. Apple’s reported comparison used a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M5 chip and 16 GB of memory playing 1080p video on battery in August 2026, according to iGeeksBlog’s account of Apple’s test footnote.
What Apple is actually claiming
Apple’s current Safari webpage states: “Up to 5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome.” The wording matters. The figure applies to continuous video streaming, preserves the “up to” qualification and compares Safari with Chrome. It does not say that Safari will add five hours to ordinary battery life, mixed web browsing, office work, software development or demanding web applications.

Apple presents the advantage as a result of developing Safari for Apple devices and integrating it closely with Mac hardware and macOS. That is Apple’s explanation and marketing claim; it is not an independent finding that applies identically to every MacBook.

These are the conditions reported by iGeeksBlog, rather than a procedure independently verified here. They describe the equipment and workload, not a promise that the machine ran for a particular total number of hours or that another Mac will show the same gap.
Why your result can be different
A video loop is unusually consistent. Real MacBook use changes constantly, so several variables can narrow or widen the difference:

- BUILT FOR COLLEGE. AND BEYOND — MacBook Air with the M5 chip packs blazing speed and powerful AI capabilities into an incredibly portable design. And with up to 18 hours of battery life,* this thin and light powerhouse is ready to take on almost any major, just about anywhere.
- TEAR THROUGH TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS — With its faster CPU and unified memory, the M5 chip delivers even more performance and fluidity across apps, making multitasking and creative workflows smooth and responsive. A powerful Neural Engine and next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators give you a powerful platform for AI.
- MAKE QUICK WORK OF YOUR TO-DO LIST — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly — whether it’s for school or everyday life. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
- A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.
- Mac model and configuration: screen size, chip generation, memory, battery capacity and display technology affect power use.
- Workload: a streaming video test does not represent active web apps, many open tabs, video calls, gaming, document editing or background synchronization.
- Video conditions: resolution, codec, frame rate, full-screen mode and whether hardware decoding is used can change energy consumption.
- Display and network settings: brightness, Wi-Fi quality, external displays and unstable connections all draw power independently of the browser.
- Software state: macOS, Safari and Chrome versions, extensions, open processes and system settings may differ from Apple’s setup.
- Battery condition: cycle count, maximum capacity, temperature and power-management behavior influence runtime.
Consequently, “up to five hours” should be treated as an upper-bound claim under Apple’s stated type of test, not as a typical gain to budget for.

Safari versus Chrome: what the evidence establishes
| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| Does Safari use less battery for video streaming? | Apple claims up to five additional hours compared with Chrome in its stated comparison. |
| Is five hours guaranteed on every MacBook? | No. The claim is qualified by “up to” and tied to a particular workload and test configuration. |
| Is there a matching independent 2026 replication? | No controlled replication of Apple’s exact video test is established here. |
| Does the claim cover mixed everyday work? | No numerical result for general browsing or other workloads is provided. |
Other commentary should not be mistaken for a direct check of Apple’s number. One independent article described a separate, long-term, non-scientific experiment, while another measured Chrome battery consumption on two machines rather than running a controlled Safari-versus-Chrome comparison. Neither supplies a matching result for Apple’s Mac, video settings and 2026 browser versions.

How to test Safari on your own MacBook
You do not need to buy a new MacBook or accessory to evaluate the claim. A simple repeatable comparison can show whether Safari helps your particular setup:
- Charge the MacBook to the same starting percentage for both runs and disconnect the charger.
- Install current updates for macOS, Safari and Chrome, then restart the Mac to reduce unrelated background activity.
- Choose one video service and one fixed video, using the same resolution—1080p if you want to approximate Apple’s reported condition.
- Set brightness, volume, Wi-Fi location, display connections and power settings identically.
- Close unrelated applications and browser extensions, then play the video in Safari until a chosen battery percentage is reached.
- Repeat the same procedure in Chrome under the same conditions. Run each browser more than once if practical and record the elapsed time.
This is a personal comparison, not a laboratory benchmark. Keep the browser versions, macOS release, battery-health reading and test date with your notes so a later result can be interpreted fairly.

Apple’s other Safari messages are separate claims
Apple’s campaign also discusses privacy and performance benefits. Those statements should be assessed on their own terms and attributed to Apple; they do not independently prove the five-hour battery figure. A privacy feature or a browser benchmark cannot be converted into a battery-life measurement without a controlled test using the same hardware and workload.

What to do if battery life matters
If you already own a MacBook, trying Safari for streaming is a low-cost, reversible software choice. Keep Chrome for sites, extensions or workflows that require it, and compare the tasks that matter to you rather than relying on the maximum headline number. If your battery is deteriorating, brightness is high, an external display is attached or background processes are active, addressing those factors may have a larger practical effect than changing browsers.
