Short answer: Apple was reported to have said in January 2021 that at least some Bluetooth failures on the first M1 Macs were software-fixable. The available evidence does not identify a single macOS release that solved every case, or prove that every affected owner received a universal fix. If an M1 Mac is still unreliable in 2026, diagnose the accessory, radio environment, macOS, and third-party software rather than assuming it is automatically the original launch bug.
What happened in January 2021?
The original story was published on January 11, 2021, soon after the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini reached customers. Users described intermittent disconnects, failed pairing and wireless keyboards, mice, trackpads, AirPods Pro and other audio devices becoming unusable. The reports covered more than one first-generation M1 model, with the Mac mini attracting particular attention because a desktop with no working Bluetooth input can leave its owner needing a wired keyboard or mouse immediately.
9to5Mac reported that Apple had said the problem was not hardware-related and could be addressed by a software update. That was a response relayed through a third party, not a published Apple engineering bulletin or formal repair announcement.
What Apple actually confirmed—and what remains unknown
| Established by the available record | Not established |
|---|---|
| Apple was reported to have characterized at least some early M1 Bluetooth failures as software-fixable. | The exact technical cause, such as a driver, firmware, power-management or interference fault. |
| The report concerned real user symptoms across multiple accessories and M1 Macs. | A named macOS version that universally fixed the issue, a release date for the promised fix, or a measured success rate. |
| Apple has current general Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance. | A recall, replacement programme or proof that every remaining failure is related to the 2020 launch problem. |
Discussion linking Big Sur 11.2 with Bluetooth improvements is anecdotal user evidence, not proof of a universal fix. It is therefore inaccurate to say that Big Sur 11.2 definitively repaired every M1 Bluetooth problem.

Is the M1 Bluetooth problem fixed now?
There is no documented, M1-specific blanket statement in the available Apple material saying that all of those failures were resolved. Apple’s current support guidance treats Bluetooth trouble as a broad category involving pairing, accessory power, interference, audio modes and macOS software. It recommends keeping macOS current and working through the connection itself, rather than identifying a permanent M1 defect. See Apple’s Bluetooth and Magic accessory guidance.
That distinction matters in 2026. A remaining failure could be a remnant of an early system bug, but it could also be a flat battery, a damaged accessory, a crowded 2.4GHz environment, a USB-C dock, a third-party utility or a failed Mac radio. The tests below separate those possibilities.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
- Discovery failure: the accessory never appears in the Bluetooth list.
- Pairing failure: it appears but will not connect.
- Connection drops: it connects, then disconnects during use or after sleep.
- Input failure: a keyboard, mouse or trackpad becomes unusable.
- Audio instability: headphones or speakers stutter, pop or lose sound.
- Call-only quality loss: sound becomes tinny or quieter when an app uses the headset microphone. Apple says this can be normal two-way Bluetooth headset mode, which uses lower-quality audio; it is not by itself evidence of an M1 defect. See Apple’s audio explanation.
Work through the least destructive fixes first
- Restart the Mac. This clears a transient controller or wake-state problem without changing your data.
- Power-cycle the accessory. Charge it fully, switch it off and on, and put it into discoverable or pairing mode.
- Forget and pair again. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth. Hold the pointer over the device, click Connect when it is discoverable, or Control-click it and choose Forget before pairing again. Apple documents the current controls at Bluetooth settings and pairing and forgetting devices.
- Test one accessory at a time. Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices. If only one headset or mouse fails, the accessory is a stronger suspect than the Mac.
- Install every compatible macOS update. Use Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update. Apple’s current compatibility guidance covers Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, Ventura 13, Monterey 12 and Big Sur 11 where supported: macOS update guidance.
- Reduce possible interference. Move USB 3 drives, hubs and docks away from the Mac, test without the USB-C dock, bring the accessory closer, and temporarily try another Wi-Fi network or Wi-Fi off where practical. These are diagnostic tests, not proof of what caused the original 2021 reports.
- Cross-test both sides. Try a second known-good Bluetooth device on the M1 Mac, then try the suspect accessory on another computer or tablet. Several known-good devices failing on one Mac points toward the Mac or its environment; one accessory failing everywhere points toward that accessory.
If Bluetooth fails after sleep or only in normal startup
On Apple silicon, Safe Mode can show whether software loaded during an ordinary startup is involved. Shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, select the startup disk, hold Shift, then click Continue in Safe Mode; Apple’s procedure is documented at Safe Mode and startup options.
If Bluetooth works in Safe Mode but fails normally, investigate mouse and keyboard managers, audio-routing tools, VPN or network filters, remote-control software, dock utilities and corporate management agents. Safe Mode isolates a class of causes; it is not a permanent Bluetooth repair.

Emergency access when the Mac has no working input
Use a cable with Apple accessories
Connect a Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad to the Mac with its charging/data cable, wait about one minute for pairing, then disconnect it. This is Apple’s documented workaround at its accessory support page.
Keep wired input available
A wired USB keyboard and mouse are the most dependable recovery tools, especially for a Mac mini. A USB-C hub with USB-A ports can provide those connections while preserving a laptop’s limited ports. The hub is not a Bluetooth repair, and its USB devices can themselves contribute to radio interference, so test with and without it.

Use an external Bluetooth adapter cautiously
An adapter may bypass an unstable internal radio path, but macOS compatibility, sleep/wake behaviour and controller selection vary. It is a contingency, not a guaranteed cure; a dongle may not help if macOS continues to prefer the internal controller.

Do not begin with Intel-era PRAM or SMC reset instructions: Apple silicon uses different startup behaviour. Firmware revival is intended for rare firmware or startup failures, not routine disconnections. Apple’s procedure requires another Mac running macOS Sonoma 14 or later, a compatible USB-C data-and-charging cable and Finder; it attempts Revive Mac before a destructive restore. - Fast Transmission Rate: This upgraded Bluetooth 5.4 adapter features EDR technology and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) configuration up to 3Mbps, which greatly improves transmission rates and reduces the loss of transmission efficiency due to interference in the 2.4GHz band. Enables fast, no delay wireless data connections between your computer and Bluetooth devices.
- System Support: The upgraded Bluetooth 5.4 dongle has a wide range of applications. You can connect up to 5 devices at the same time using Bluetooth wireless. Such as Bluetooth speakers, keyboards, headsets, mice, and Bluetooth printers, etc. Only supports Windows 11/10/8.1, Not compatible with Mac OS, Linux, car stereo systems,XBOX,ps4 or TVs.
If the Mac has a blank screen, cannot start or shows a firmware-recovery symbol, treat that as a broader startup problem. A full erase and restore should be a last resort after a backup and Apple’s advice, because it erases the Mac and cannot repair a defective accessory or radio.
How to decide whether service is warranted
- More likely accessory-specific: only one device fails; it fails on another computer; its battery is low; or it is not entering pairing mode.
- More likely Mac-side or environmental: multiple known-good devices fail on the same Mac; failures follow sleep; the problem began after a macOS or utility installation; or moving a dock or accessory changes the result.
After updates, clean re-pairing, interference tests and cross-testing, persistent failure across several known-good accessories justifies Apple or an Apple-authorized service provider evaluation. Apple’s repair entry point is support.apple.com/mac/repair. Do not assume a replacement Bluetooth keyboard will help until the Mac-versus-accessory test is complete.
Practical workarounds and their trade-offs
| Option | Benefit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| macOS update | Low-cost first software step | Cannot fix a bad accessory, interference or failed hardware |
| Forget and re-pair | Safe and targeted | Requires pairing again and may not help system-wide failures |
| Wired keyboard or mouse | Reliable emergency access | Uses a port and adds cable clutter |
| USB-C hub | Adds ports for wired troubleshooting | Cost, clutter and possible USB/radio interference |
| External Bluetooth adapter | Can bypass the internal radio path | Compatibility and sleep/wake behaviour vary |
| Safe Mode | Helps isolate third-party software | Not a normal-use repair |
| Firmware revive | Can address rare firmware corruption without initially erasing data | Needs another Mac and the correct cable; not a routine Bluetooth fix |
| Full restore | Clean software reset | Erases the Mac and may not fix hardware |
The Bottom Line
The 2021 M1 Bluetooth story was real, and Apple was reported to have promised a software fix. But no available evidence proves a universal M1-specific resolution. Update macOS, isolate the accessory and wireless environment, test Safe Mode when appropriate, and keep wired input available. If several known-good devices still fail on one Mac, seek service rather than repeatedly buying Bluetooth peripherals.
