HotHardware reported on September 20, 2025 that Apple had locked up half, or potentially more, of TSMC’s early 2nm capacity. KGI’s October 2025 analyst estimate put Apple above 50%, mainly for the A20 processor. TSMC has confirmed that its N2 process entered high-volume manufacturing, but it has not publicly disclosed Apple’s percentage.
Did Apple book most of TSMC’s 2nm capacity?
The answer is reported yes, officially unconfirmed. The available figures describe foundry capacity allocated to a customer, not a published count of finished Apple chips. They also do not show that Apple controls all of TSMC’s N2 output.

HotHardware’s September 20, 2025 report characterized Apple’s allocation as “half (and potentially more).” In October 2025, analyst firm KGI separately estimated that Apple would account for over 50% of TSMC’s N2 capacity, primarily to make Apple’s A20 processor. Neither figure was presented as a customer-allocation disclosure by TSMC.

TSMC CEO C.C. Wei said on the company’s FY2026 Q1 earnings call on April 16, 2026: “Today, our new node, N2, has already entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025 with good yield.” TSMC said the ramp was proceeding in phases at its Hsinchu and Kaohsiung sites.
#1 Best Overall
TSMC describes N2 as a nanosheet-transistor technology aimed at both smartphone processors and high-performance-computing (HPC) and artificial-intelligence workloads. The company’s public comments confirm manufacturing status, yield and demand across those markets—not how much capacity any one customer receives.
How much capacity did Apple reserve?
| Source and date | Claim | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| HotHardware, September 20, 2025 | Apple had half, “and potentially more,” of early N2 capacity. | Secondary reporting of a large Apple allocation. | Not a TSMC disclosure or audited percentage. |
| KGI analyst research, October 2025 | Apple would account for over 50% of N2 capacity, mainly for A20. | An independent analyst estimate that corroborates a majority allocation. | Not proof that TSMC assigned a precise share or that the estimate remains unchanged. |
| TSMC FY2026 Q1 earnings call, April 16, 2026 | N2 entered high-volume manufacturing in 2025 Q4 with good yield and was ramping at Hsinchu and Kaohsiung. | Primary confirmation of production progress and broad smartphone/HPC-AI demand. | No Apple percentage or named customer allocation. |
The safest description is therefore “Apple reportedly booked a majority of early TSMC 2nm capacity,” with the percentage attributed to HotHardware and KGI rather than stated as settled fact.

Which Apple chips could use TSMC’s 2nm process?
A20 processor
KGI’s estimate specifically linked Apple’s expected N2 demand primarily to the A20 processor. That makes the A20 the clearest reported reason for Apple’s early reservation, although Apple had not publicly announced an N2 specification for a particular chip in the cited material.
2026 iPhone models
A June 16, 2026 MacRumors report, citing Bloomberg, said some expected 2026 iPhone models would use 2nm chips. This is forward-looking reporting, not an Apple announcement, and it should not be expanded into a claim that every 2026 iPhone—or every future iPhone—will use N2.

Other Apple products
The cited reports do not establish N2 versions of Apple’s Mac, iPad, Watch or other processors. TSMC’s N2 platform is designed for smartphones and HPC, but that market description does not identify Apple products or guarantee their adoption.
Why would Apple seek a majority allocation?
A leading share of initial capacity could give Apple earlier access to a new process while TSMC expands production. That matters when a node is being introduced in phases and demand comes from both smartphone and AI-oriented HPC customers. It could help Apple plan a high-volume launch around a newer, potentially more efficient process, but the reports do not provide a public contract, wafer volume, pricing arrangement or performance guarantee.

“Capacity” here means semiconductor manufacturing capacity—typically wafer starts and associated process availability. It is not the same as a disclosed number of completed A20 processors, and wafer allocation can change as yields, demand and production phases change.

What happens next on TSMC’s 2nm roadmap?
TSMC’s April 23, 2026 North America Technology Symposium announcement described N2U as an extension of the 2nm platform scheduled for production in 2028. N2U is a future roadmap step, not evidence that Apple has reserved a particular share of it.

As N2 ramps across Hsinchu and Kaohsiung, publicly available statements may clarify overall output and customer demand. Unless TSMC, Apple or a filing discloses an allocation, any Apple percentage should remain labeled as reporting or an analyst estimate.
Quick Recap
How to read the headline accurately
- “Majority”: refers to the reported allocation—half or more in HotHardware’s account and over 50% in KGI’s estimate.
- “TSMC’s 2nm capacity”: means foundry production capacity for N2, not a public inventory of finished chips.
- “To get a head start”: describes the likely strategic benefit of early access; it is not a quoted Apple explanation.
- “Apple will use 2nm”: remains model-specific and forward-looking in the cited 2026 device reports.
