Apple reportedly discussed acquiring Lux Optics, the independent company behind the Halide camera app, during summer 2025. The talks ended without an acquisition in September 2025. Apple later hired Lux co-founder and designer Sebastiaan de With. No public Apple announcement confirms a deal, and Lux continues to operate as an independent company.
What Apple actually pursued
The available reporting supports “Apple considered acquiring Lux Optics,” not “Apple bought Lux” or even that a signed acquisition agreement existed. The Information reported that Apple held acquisition discussions with Lux and that the company’s intellectual property was an important consideration. The account became public through reporting on a lawsuit between Lux co-founders, rather than through an Apple announcement.

According to accounts from The Information, the discussions took place in summer 2025 and ended in September. Coverage from Engadget likewise describes a collapsed effort to improve Apple’s built-in Camera app.
Apple was not reported as a defendant in the founders’ case and was not accused of wrongdoing. The later employment of one Lux co-founder is separate from an acquisition.

What Lux Optics makes
Lux is more than the maker of one camera app. Its own product directory lists four iPhone or iPad-focused products:
| Product | Purpose | Why it could interest Apple |
|---|---|---|
| Halide | Manual and professional-oriented photography for iPhone and iPad, including RAW-oriented workflows. | Camera controls, interaction design, and computational-photography expertise. |
| Kino | Pro-oriented video capture with Apple Log workflows and color presets. | Video capture, color management, and filmmaking tools. |
| Spectre | Computational long-exposure photography, such as light trails and crowd removal. | Specialized computational imaging techniques. |
| Orion | Turns an iPad into an HDMI monitor with compatible capture hardware. | Experience connecting Apple devices to advanced camera workflows. |
Lux describes Halide as a professional camera designed to remain approachable to beginners while offering expert controls in its Halide Mark II launch article. It presents Kino as a cinematic camera in its Kino announcement, and describes Orion’s monitor function in its Orion article.
The breadth of that portfolio helps explain why Apple might have looked at Lux as a source of camera software knowledge and intellectual property rather than simply as a popular App Store title. The exact assets Apple wanted were not disclosed.

Why Apple might want Lux’s expertise
Apple’s Camera app is optimized for quick, automatic shooting. Lux’s apps address users who want more direct control over the increasingly sophisticated camera hardware in an iPhone.
Manual photography controls
Halide exposes controls such as manual focus and exposure in a workflow intended for photographers who do not want every decision hidden behind automation. Apple could use that experience when designing a more capable Pro-camera mode, although no specific Halide feature has been confirmed for iOS.
RAW and computational imaging
Advanced photographers often need RAW capture, control over processing, and a way to balance computational photography with deliberate adjustments. Halide’s product history gives Lux experience in that boundary between conventional camera technique and phone-based computational imaging.

Professional video
Kino’s Apple Log support and color presets give Lux expertise outside still photography. That could be relevant as iPhone video becomes part of professional production workflows, but reports have not shown that Apple adopted Kino code or a particular feature.
Interface and product design
The value may also have been human: Lux built camera interfaces for people who want advanced controls without a conventional camera’s complexity. The later hiring of de With suggests Apple valued that design and product judgment, even though it does not prove that Lux technology was transferred.
Did Apple want the apps, the technology, or the people?
The strongest documented signal is interest in Lux’s intellectual property and software expertise. The Information reported that Apple employees told Lux that its intellectual property mattered. That does not identify a definitive list of patents, source files, algorithms, or other assets, and there is no public valuation or acquisition agreement to examine.

The lawsuit reportedly includes allegations that de With provided Lux confidential material or source code to Apple. His representatives denied that he used, transferred, or disclosed Lux intellectual property in connection with his Apple job. Those are disputed allegations, not judicial findings. The case does not prove that Apple received Halide code, copied the app, or incorporated Lux technology into iOS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the acquisition talks reportedly failed
Reporting says Lux’s founders believed future Halide updates could increase the company’s value and produce a better offer later. That provides a reported explanation for why negotiations ended, but it does not establish the precise offer Apple made, whether the founders rejected a final proposal, or whether Apple withdrew.
For Apple, buying a specialist company is not the only way to obtain expertise. Hiring an individual designer or engineer can be less disruptive than integrating a small startup’s codebase, contracts, roadmap, and commercial obligations into Apple’s camera organization. It can also avoid changing an independent product that already serves a distinct user community.

What this could mean for the iPhone Camera app
The reported interest suggests Apple may be evaluating a more capable native camera experience as iPhone hardware advances. Unnamed-source reports connected the effort with future Pro-model camera improvements and more professional-grade software. Those future-product details remain rumors, not confirmed Apple specifications.
- More direct manual exposure and focus controls.
- Better access to advanced camera hardware and processing choices.
- Stronger photography and video tools for Pro users.
- A redesigned interface that keeps automatic shooting simple while offering a deeper professional mode.
- Fewer reasons for some users to rely on third-party camera apps.
None of those outcomes is guaranteed. The reporting does not establish which Lux ideas Apple may use, whether any code changed hands, or when a new Camera feature would ship.
What Halide users should know
Lux’s website continued to list Halide, Kino, Spectre, and Orion in 2026, indicating that Lux remained independent. Halide has not become an Apple app simply because de With joined Apple.
Lux’s links page describes a seven-day free trial for annual Halide memberships and a one-time purchase option; check the U.S. App Store for current pricing. The same page lists Spectre as free. Historical launch prices for Kino and Orion should not be treated as current prices.
- Existing Halide, Kino, Spectre, and Orion users should not assume that support, ownership, or pricing has changed.
- There is no confirmed Apple integration or promise that Halide features will appear in Camera.
- Apple’s employment of de With does not mean Apple hired the entire Lux team.
- Any claim that Apple copied Halide or obtained its source code goes beyond the publicly established facts.
What remains unknown
- Whether Apple made a formal acquisition offer.
- The proposed price, valuation, or transaction structure.
- Which Lux assets Apple considered most valuable.
- Whether any confidential material or source code was transferred.
- Which, if any, future iPhone Camera features were influenced by the talks.
- Whether Apple might make another offer for Lux.
The Bottom Line
Apple reportedly explored buying Lux Optics in 2025 to strengthen its camera software, but the talks ended without an acquisition. Lux remains independent, while Apple later hired co-founder Sebastiaan de With. Any future Halide-like controls in the iPhone Camera app remain unconfirmed.
