Apple released the first developer betas of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and watchOS 27 on June 8, 2026. The releases were pre-release developer software, not the later public betas that began appearing in mid-July. Apple’s release index subsequently listed developer beta 4 on July 20, 2026, so this is a dated release report rather than a claim that these are Apple’s newest builds.
The June release matters to developers testing compatibility and APIs. For most people, a public beta on a spare device is the lower-barrier option; installing any beta on a sole work, travel or emergency device carries avoidable risk.
What Apple released on June 8
Apple’s developer release index records simultaneous first 27-series developer betas for four platforms:
| Platform | Version | Build | Channel | Date |

| watchOS | 27.0 beta | 24R5289n | Developer | June 8, 2026 |
See Apple’s release index at developer.apple.com/news/releases/. The index also lists beta 4, dated July 20, 2026:
#1 Best Overall

Developer beta versus public beta
A developer beta is aimed at app makers and IT teams that need to test compatibility before a final release. A public beta is distributed through Apple’s free Beta Software Program for a broader testing audience. Public availability can lag the developer seed by days or weeks, and the two channels can carry different build numbers.
Reports place the first public betas of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 (reported as “macOS 27 Golden Gate”) and watchOS 27 around July 14, 2026. That timing is reported in aggregated coverage at Techmeme; check Apple’s beta portal for the build currently offered.

- Stay Focused Instantly: Productivity multi-tool device with an LED pixel display, built-in timer, and apps to block distractions while you focus.
- Communicate Your Status: Displays a personal BUSY message so others know when you’re busy and when you’ll be free again.
- Block Digital Distractions: With the BUSY App, automatically mute notifications and lock apps like TikTok and Instagram across all devices.
- Smart Home Integration: Works with Matter, Apple Home, and Google Home to pause music, turn on lights, or lock doors when BUSY mode is active.
- Automatic Activation: ON CALL and streaming modes activate automatically when your microphone or software is in use.
What is new in the 27-series
These are major annual-version betas, so changes can include new features, interface work and developer APIs. Beta functionality can be incomplete, restricted by hardware, language or region, or removed before the final release.

Coverage associates iOS 27 with expanded Siri and Apple Intelligence work, along with refinements to system apps and settings. Do not assume every capability runs on every iPhone: Apple Intelligence has separate hardware and regional requirements.
iPadOS 27
iPadOS is expected to carry iOS changes plus iPad-specific work involving multitasking, windows, Stage Manager, external displays and keyboard workflows. Some older iPads reportedly lose support, and supported models may still receive different feature sets.
Rank #3
watchOS 27
Changes may affect workouts, health features, notifications, communication and watch faces. A watchOS beta is closely tied to the paired iPhone’s software and can affect battery life, connectivity and third-party complications.
macOS 27
macOS 27 (reported as Golden Gate) includes interface, system-app and developer-platform changes. Reports suggest Apple may complete its move away from Intel Mac support, but use Apple’s final compatibility list for a purchasing or deployment decision.

Compatibility and Apple Intelligence limits
There is no single compatibility list for all four systems. Third-party compatibility reporting indicates broad iPhone support similar to iOS 26, dropped older iPad and Apple Watch models, and possible Apple-silicon-only support for macOS 27. Treat those as reported requirements until Apple publishes final tables; a summary is available from TidBITS.
Apple Intelligence eligibility is narrower than operating-system eligibility. Reported compatible categories include iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16-series models, iPad mini with A17 Pro, and M-series iPads and Macs. Language, region and feature-specific rules also apply. The operating system may install on your device while individual Apple Intelligence features remain unavailable.
How to install a public beta
- Enroll. Sign in at Apple’s Beta Software Program with the Apple Account used on the target device.
- Back up first. Make a current iCloud backup; for iPhone or iPad, an encrypted computer backup adds a local recovery option. Back up Mac files with Time Machine or another independent method.
- Choose the beta channel. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates, then select the offered public-beta channel.
- Update a Mac. Open System Settings → General → Software Update and install the offered beta.
- Update Apple Watch. On the paired iPhone, open Watch app → My Watch → General → Software Update. The paired iPhone may need a compatible beta.
- Meet practical prerequisites. Keep the device on power, allow sufficient free storage, and verify that essential apps and services support the beta.
Apple’s agreement describes these operating systems as pre-release software and warns that they may be unstable. Read the current agreement at beta.apple.com. Do not install configuration profiles from unofficial download sites.

| Good candidate | Why | Main cost |
|---|---|---|
| App developer | Tests APIs and app compatibility before launch | Debugging time and unstable tools |
| IT administrator | Evaluates future fleet compatibility | Support, compliance and management issues |
| Enthusiast with spare hardware | Explores features without risking a primary device | Battery drain, crashes and possible data loss |
Wait if the device is your only phone, your work or travel computer, a medical or emergency tool, or the device that holds banking, authentication, corporate VPN or accessibility workflows. Audio, video, backup and device-management software can also fail when private or changed APIs are involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRisks, recovery and rollback
If the update does not appear
- Confirm that the enrolled Apple Account is the one signed in on the device.
- Recheck Beta Updates, restart, and install any required stable release.
- Check compatibility, available storage, battery level and network access.
- Check whether the device is managed by an employer or school, or whether Apple replaced the build.
If an app breaks
Check the app developer’s compatibility notes. Banking, payment, password-manager, CarPlay, VPN, audio plug-in, accessibility and enterprise apps are common points of failure; a previous-version backup does not guarantee that an app can be restored to a beta-incompatible state.
Returning to stable software
- iPhone and iPad: A computer restore can usually return the device to the current public release, but erasing the device may be required.
- Mac: Rollback may require restoring a Time Machine backup or reinstalling macOS.
- Apple Watch: Downgrade options are the most restrictive and may require Apple service or a specific recovery process. Do not install a watchOS beta on a watch you cannot afford to lose temporarily.
A backup made on a newer beta may not restore cleanly to an older stable system, which is why a separate pre-beta backup matters.
Current status of this release
The June 8 developer seeds were superseded by later developer builds, including the beta 4 builds dated July 20 above. Public-beta availability was reported in mid-July. For an up-to-date installation decision, compare the version and build shown in Software Update with Apple’s release index rather than relying on this historical announcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the public beta free?
Apple’s Beta Software Program is generally free; it is separate from the paid Apple Developer Program. Enrollment and current eligibility rules are shown at https://beta.apple.com/.
Can I install a watchOS beta without updating my iPhone?
Usually the paired iPhone must run a compatible software version, and watchOS rollback is unusually restrictive. Check the current requirements before installing.
Will every compatible device receive Apple Intelligence?
No. Apple Intelligence depends on model, chip, language, region and the specific feature, even when the base operating system installs.
