Apple has started rolling out another round of testing builds: the fourth developer betas and the fourth public betas for iOS 17.5, macOS Sonoma 14.5, and additional platform updates tied to the same release train.
If you’re on the Beta Software Program, this is your cue to check for the update in Settings or System Settings. If you’re not, it’s also a useful checkpoint: later betas usually mean fewer surprises than early ones, but instability still happens.

This guide covers what to expect, how to install safely, how to troubleshoot the common breakpoints, and what to do if you need to roll back.
What Apple means by developer vs public betas
Apple runs two main beta tracks, and they’re designed for different testers.
#1 Best Overall
- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
- Developer beta: For developers enrolled in Apple’s Developer Program. Builds often arrive first and may include more experimental changes.
- Public beta: For Apple’s Public Beta Program members. These builds are generally considered more suitable for everyday testing, but they can still break workflows.
“Fourth beta” in this context means you’re installing the fourth iteration of that same target release (for example, iOS 17.5). It doesn’t guarantee the build is stable, but it does mean Apple has already worked through earlier issues.
Supported betas and where they show up
When Apple posts a new beta cycle for iOS and macOS, the update usually spans multiple Apple operating systems in the same window. The exact list you’ll see depends on your devices and whether you’re enrolled in the right program.
| Platform | Where you install | What you typically need |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (iOS 17.5 beta) | Settings > General > Software Update | OTA beta enrollment |
| iPad (iPadOS 17.5 beta) | Settings > General > Software Update | OTA beta enrollment |
| Mac (macOS Sonoma 14.5 beta) | System Settings > General > Software Update | Beta enrollment via Apple ID |
| Apple Watch (watchOS beta, if offered) | Watch app on iPhone > General > Software Update | iPhone running a compatible iOS beta |
| Apple TV (tvOS beta, if offered) | Settings > System > Software Updates | tvOS beta enrollment/tvOS profile |
Prerequisites before you install
Betas are most painful when you install without a rollback plan. Before you update, spend 10 minutes covering these basics.
- Backup: Run a full backup. On iPhone/iPad, use iCloud Backup and/or a Finder/iTunes backup to your computer.
- Enough storage: Keep several gigabytes free. If you’re near the limit, OTA installs can fail mid-download.
- Power and network: Use a charger and a stable Wi‑Fi connection. Avoid updating on a metered or unstable network.
- Beta profile installed: For iPhone/iPad and sometimes tvOS, you need the correct beta profile via the Apple Beta Software Program.
- Compatibility check: Some features and app behaviors can change between minor builds. If you rely on an app for work, expect a risk window.
How to install the iOS 17.5 beta
You can install iOS 17.5 betas over the air if you’re enrolled. The steps below focus on the common path that works for both developer and public testers.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap General > Software Update.
- If you haven’t enrolled yet, go to the appropriate Apple Beta Software Program page, sign in with your Apple ID, and install the beta configuration profile. Then return to this screen.
- When the iOS 17.5 beta appears, tap Download and Install.
- Agree to terms if prompted, then keep your iPhone connected to power.
- After updating, verify the version number by returning to Settings > General > About.
How to install the iPadOS 17.5 beta
iPadOS uses essentially the same OTA workflow as iOS. The critical difference is that you must update both your enrollment and your iPad, and some apps behave differently on tablet form factors.
- Open Settings on your iPad.
- Go to General > Software Update.
- If you don’t see the beta, confirm you installed the iPadOS/iOS beta profile using your enrolled Apple ID.
- Select the iPadOS 17.5 beta update if it’s listed.
- Tap Download and Install.
- After the reboot, check About to confirm the build is correct.
How to install the macOS Sonoma 14.5 beta
On macOS, you enroll your Mac to receive betas for your Apple ID, then install via Software Update. The most common failure mode is not enrolling the correct beta track.

- Go to General > Software Update.
- Ensure you’re enrolled for the same beta track you intend to use (developer vs public). Enrollment usually happens through the Apple Beta Software Program website for your Apple ID.
- When the update appears (macOS Sonoma 14.5 beta), click Update Now.
- Accept prompts and let the Mac reboot into the installer.
- Confirm the installed version in System Settings > General > About.
If you manage multiple Macs, confirm each one is actually receiving the same track. It’s easy to enroll one machine and assume the others will follow.

How to install tvOS and watchOS betas (and what to do if you don’t see them)
watchOS and tvOS updates commonly depend on the iPhone and the pairing state. If you don’t see an update, the fix is usually enrollment or prerequisite OS compatibility.
watchOS
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap General > Software Update.
- If watchOS 10/updates appear as a beta, tap Download and Install.
- Make sure your Apple Watch is on its charger.
If watchOS doesn’t offer a beta update, check whether your iPhone is running the compatible iOS beta and whether you’re enrolled for watchOS betas.
tvOS
- On your Apple TV, open Settings.
- Go to System > Software Updates.
- Look for the tvOS beta update and choose Update.
- If there’s no option, confirm the tvOS beta profile/enrollment method used for your device model.
Some Apple TV models require a different enrollment flow than iPhone, so treat enrollment as a first check whenever the update list looks empty.
What to expect from a late-cycle 17.x beta
By the fourth developer/public beta for iOS 17.5, Apple typically focuses on a combination of bug fixes, performance tuning, and compatibility adjustments. Features can still shift, but major overhauls are less common this late in the cycle.
- Stability improvements: watch for fewer crashes in Photos, Messages, and key background services.
- App compatibility: your installed apps may behave differently if they rely on updated OS frameworks.
- Battery and modem behavior: wireless connectivity changes can still appear in betas, even when release notes are light.
Don’t assume “fourth beta” means “safe for daily use.” If you use your iPhone for critical work, consider installing on a secondary device first.

Known gotchas (and how to prevent them)
Most beta problems aren’t random—they’re predictable. These are the usual culprits.
- Insufficient storage: OTA downloads can require temporary space for unpacking. Keep extra room.
- Wrong beta track: Mixing developer and public profiles can cause confusing update behavior.
- Setup Assistant loops: if the install fails, the device may try repeatedly to set up services. Patience and a full restart usually help.
- Account and keychain mismatches: if you sign in/out of Apple services mid-update, you can trigger iCloud sync delays.
- Peripheral dependencies: accessories (Bluetooth devices, car systems, docking stations) may behave differently after updates.
Common problems and troubleshooting
Here’s a practical troubleshooting checklist when the main update path fails.
Software Update won’t download
First, try a network change. Then restart the device and try again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Toggle Wi‑Fi off/on or switch to a different network.
- Restart the iPhone/iPad/Mac.
- Check storage: free several gigabytes before retrying.
- Verify the beta profile is still present under the device’s enrollment settings.
Install fails during verification
This can happen if the download is corrupted or interrupted.
- Delete the failed update package (if the UI allows it) and retry download.
- Confirm enough free storage remains after the download.
- Keep the device on power during the entire update process.
After updating: apps crash or behave oddly
Start by checking whether the app has an update available in the App Store.
- Update all apps in the App Store.
- Restart the device to clear background state.
- If a single app breaks, uninstall and reinstall as a test.
- Report the issue via the feedback channels you used for the beta.
Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, or cellular issues
These problems are common after big OS updates. Try these in order.

Mac: boot problems after macOS Sonoma 14.5 beta install
If you can reach recovery options, use safe paths and restore from backup rather than forcing repeated installs.
- Reboot and hold the appropriate key combo for your Mac if needed to access recovery.
- Try Disk Utility checks if available.
- Restore from a Time Machine backup if you have one.
- If you’re comfortable, reinstall using the correct macOS installer for your target version.
Downgrade and rollback: what’s realistically possible
Rollback is the part most people underestimate. With iOS and macOS betas, the safest plan is to assume you’ll need a full restore if you want to return to a public stable release.
- iPhone/iPad: Rolling back typically requires restoring via a computer using Finder (macOS) or iTunes (older macOS setups) with the stable iOS firmware package.
- Mac: Rolling back may require reinstalling a stable macOS version and restoring from Time Machine.
Because beta builds can change data formats, restoring from a backup may not always bring you fully back to the exact prior state. Before you install, ensure your current backup is complete.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Developer Beta vs Public Beta: which should you choose?
This is mainly a risk management question. Developer betas tend to be earlier; public betas tend to be slightly more conservative.
| Scenario | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You depend on the iPhone for work | Public beta (or stable) | Less likely to introduce cutting-edge changes than developer builds |
| You test apps and need the earliest compatibility signals | Developer beta | Get updates first and validate API behavior sooner |
| You want to minimize surprises | Stable release | No beta artifacts, fewer regressions |
If you’re on a single device and you can’t afford downtime, the most practical answer is often “don’t install betas right now.”

- Use backups you can restore: iCloud Backup is good, but computer backups can be faster to restore in emergencies.
- Be cautious with passwords and 2FA changes: avoid major account changes during an OS update if you can.
- Report issues with reproducible steps: if you find a bug, write down what you did before it appeared (screen, app version, and whether Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth was on).
- Watch app permissions: after updates, double-check critical permissions like Location and Contacts.
Also, keep an eye on storage and battery health. Beta behavior sometimes changes power usage patterns.
FAQ
Will the fourth beta install automatically?
Usually, if you’re enrolled and you’ve enabled automatic updates, the device may download and prompt you for install. Many testers still choose manual installation so they can time the reboot and confirm backups first.
Can I install the developer beta and public beta on different devices with the same Apple ID?
Yes, you can enroll different devices in different tracks depending on how profiles are applied. The key is that each device should be clearly configured for the track you want. Mixing without understanding the profile state can lead to confusing update behavior.
What should I do if I rely on a specific app (for example, banking or remote work tools)?
Check whether the app vendor has explicitly supported the iOS/macOS beta. If there’s no guidance, install on a secondary device first, or wait for a later beta/build closer to release.
Do I need to update watchOS or tvOS immediately?
No. You can generally stay on your current watchOS or tvOS version while you test iOS/macOS. When you do update, prioritize charging and confirm that prerequisites are satisfied on the iPhone.
What if I lose data after a beta update?
Start by restoring from your backup (iCloud or computer) rather than attempting multiple OS reinstalls. If you don’t have a reliable backup from before the beta, data recovery may be limited—so backup discipline is the best prevention.
Bottom Line
Apple’s fourth iOS 17.5 and macOS Sonoma 14.5 betas are a normal part of its release process, and they’re a good option for testers who can tolerate occasional bugs. If you’re installing, do it with a full backup, plenty of storage, and enough time to recover if something goes sideways.
