Short answer: In the United States, an Apple Certified Refurbished product bought directly from Apple includes Apple’s standard one-year limited warranty. Apple’s direct-store return policy allows a return or exchange within 14 calendar days after you receive the product, as long as it is in original condition with its included parts, accessories, and packaging.
Those rules apply to Apple’s U.S. store, not automatically to refurbished Apple products sold by another retailer or marketplace seller. The seller’s own return window and warranty control that transaction. The warranty and the return window are separate: a return lets you send back a purchase during the stated period, while the limited warranty addresses qualifying problems under its terms and exclusions.

What Apple Certified Refurbished means
Apple Certified Refurbished is Apple’s own refurbished program. Apple says it tests and cleans refurbished products, uses genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, and backs every Apple Certified Refurbished product with its standard one-year limited warranty. The program is different from a used device sold independently by a marketplace seller.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For refurbished iOS devices, Apple specifically says the device comes with a new battery and outer shell. That statement is limited to iOS products; it should not be applied to Macs, iPads, or other product categories unless the listing or applicable terms say so. Apple’s overview of the program is available at Apple Certified Refurbished.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple’s catalog currently advertises savings of up to 15 percent, but that is a changeable maximum marketing figure, not a guaranteed discount on every model. Inventory, configurations, prices, and availability can change without changing the basic distinction between an Apple-direct purchase and a third-party sale.
The one-year limited warranty
The included warranty is a limited warranty. It is not an all-damage promise and does not mean Apple will repair every problem for free. Coverage depends on the product category and the specific warranty document.
What the warranty is intended to address
The warranty applies to qualifying defects covered by Apple’s terms. For an iPhone or another iOS device, consult Apple’s U.S. iOS warranty document for the exact definitions, remedies, and conditions: Apple U.S. iOS warranty. The document, rather than a seller’s informal description, determines whether a reported fault qualifies.

- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Important exclusions on iOS products
Apple’s U.S. iOS warranty lists exclusions that include accidental or external damage, cosmetic damage unless it results from a defect in materials or workmanship, unauthorized service or modification, and normal wear and tear. A cracked screen caused by a drop, liquid or impact damage, worn surfaces, or a device altered by an unauthorized service provider can therefore fall outside the limited warranty. These are examples from the iOS document; other product categories can have different wording.
Why the distinction matters
A device can be refurbished, genuine, and sold by Apple yet still be outside warranty coverage for a particular incident. Before sending a product for service, describe the symptom accurately and check the warranty document for the relevant product type. Do not describe the included warranty as accidental-damage insurance.
Apple’s U.S. direct-purchase return policy
For products purchased directly from Apple in the United States, Apple says, “You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it.” The period is measured from receipt, not from the date the order was placed. Apple’s policy allows a return or exchange during that window when the product is in original condition and includes its parts, accessories, and packaging. See Apple’s Returns & Refunds help and the U.S. sales policy for the controlling language.

What “original condition” requires
Keep the refurbished device, included cable or other accessories, manuals, protective materials, and the original box together. A missing accessory or damaged packaging can complicate a return because Apple’s policy requires the included parts, accessories, and packaging to accompany the product. The safest approach is to preserve everything until you have decided to keep the device.

Both a return and an exchange must be requested within the same direct-store period. An exchange is not a warranty repair; it is a change to the purchase under the sales policy. Availability of an identical configuration can change, so check Apple’s instructions for the order rather than assuming a replacement will be held.
What the policy does not establish
The policy does not make the U.S. direct-store period universal. It also does not turn a product bought from another seller into an Apple-store return. Refund method, inspection steps, shipping instructions, and any product-specific conditions should be confirmed in Apple’s live return instructions for the order.

Apple direct versus another retailer
The seller is the first question to answer when a refurbished Apple product needs to be returned. Apple explicitly says a product purchased through another retailer must be returned under that retailer’s policy.
| Purchase channel | Return terms | Warranty source | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple U.S. store | Apple’s direct-store policy: 14 calendar days from receipt, with original condition, included parts, accessories, and packaging. | Apple’s standard one-year limited warranty for Apple Certified Refurbished products, subject to the applicable product warranty and exclusions. | Product category, return instructions, and any AppleCare eligibility. |
| Another retailer or marketplace seller | The retailer or seller’s own policy; Apple’s direct-store period should not be assumed. | Any warranty stated by that seller, marketplace program, or manufacturer terms that apply to the transaction. | Seller identity, deadline, condition requirements, shipping responsibility, and whether the listing is actually Apple Certified Refurbished. |
A listing that uses the words “refurbished Apple iPhone” is not automatically an Apple Certified Refurbished listing. Read the seller’s condition grade, warranty language, and return section before paying. If the seller is a marketplace participant, the marketplace’s general policy may coexist with the individual seller’s terms; the listing and order record are the relevant documents.
How to protect your return rights
- Confirm who sold the device. Check the order confirmation and invoice. If Apple is not the seller of record, start with that retailer’s policy instead of using Apple’s direct-store deadline.
- Record the receipt date. For an Apple-direct order, use the delivery or pickup date to calculate the calendar-day deadline. Do not wait until the last day if the product is defective, incomplete, or not what you expected.
- Inspect without discarding anything. Test the device, check the model and storage, and retain the box, accessories, and protective materials while you decide.
- Read the live return instructions. Use Apple’s Returns & Refunds page for an Apple-direct order. The instructions attached to the order govern how the item must be handed over or shipped.
- Keep evidence of handoff. Save the return authorization, carrier receipt, tracking number, and photographs of the packed item. These records help if a shipment is delayed or the returned contents are disputed.
- Separate a change-of-mind return from a defect claim. A return uses the sales policy. A fault discovered after the return period may need to be handled under the limited warranty or an optional AppleCare plan.
Warranty claim or return: which route fits?
| Situation | Usually relevant route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You changed your mind soon after an Apple-direct delivery. | Return or exchange under the sales policy. | The direct-store return period is designed for sending back the purchase, subject to condition and included-item requirements. |
| The device has a suspected manufacturing defect. | Apple’s limited-warranty process, after checking the product warranty. | Warranty coverage depends on whether the problem qualifies and whether an exclusion applies. |
| The device was dropped, bent, modified, or cosmetically worn. | Check exclusions and any separate coverage before assuming warranty service. | Apple’s iOS warranty lists accidental, external, certain cosmetic, unauthorized-service, and normal-wear exclusions. |
| The product was bought from another retailer. | The retailer’s return process and the warranty stated for that sale. | Apple’s direct-store return terms do not transfer to a third-party transaction. |
When contacting Apple about a suspected defect, have the order information and a clear description of what happens, when it happens, and whether there is visible damage. Use the warranty document for the product category to understand the applicable limits before authorizing service. Do not remove evidence of damage or continue using a device that is unsafe.

AppleCare and additional coverage
Apple says buyers may be able to purchase an AppleCare product for additional coverage on a refurbished device. Eligibility, price, duration, deductibles, service fees, and covered incidents depend on the exact product and plan. Treat AppleCare as a separate contract, not an automatic extension of the included limited warranty.
Apple’s current refurbished iPhone 16e listing explicitly says an AppleCare product can be purchased: Refurbished iPhone 16e 256GB. That listing is an example, not proof that every refurbished model qualifies. Check the offer shown for the exact serial-numbered or order-specific device and read the plan terms before buying.
Product and geography limits
United States scope
The 14-calendar-day rule described here is Apple’s U.S. direct-purchase policy. Apple stores in other countries can use different deadlines, statutory rights, and procedures. Consumer law may also provide rights that cannot be waived by a store policy. Confirm the local Apple store’s terms before applying this guide outside the United States.
Product-specific wording
The new-battery and outer-shell statement is specific to refurbished iOS devices. Warranty exclusions quoted above come from Apple’s U.S. iOS warranty document. A Mac, Apple Watch, or another product may have different refurbishment details, warranty language, or service limitations, so open the warranty document for that category.
Policy freshness
Apple’s cited policy and catalog pages were checked on October 13, 2026. The pages do not state publication dates, and Apple can change catalog inventory, prices, return instructions, and optional coverage offers. Use the live terms linked above for the order you are actually making.
