It has not raised the number of domains: Apple’s current limit is up to five custom domains, with up to ten personalized addresses on each, according to its Custom Email Domain support page, published September 30, 2026.
What changed—and what did not
Custom Email Domain lets iCloud+ subscribers send and receive iCloud Mail using a domain they own, or a new domain they purchase during setup. Apple’s updated allowance is ten personalized email addresses per custom domain, rather than the former limit of three reported by AppleInsider. The current Apple support page states the ten-address limit; it does not provide a formal change log.

Apple’s wording is: “You can use up to five custom domains, with up to 10 personalized email addresses per domain.” The five-domain ceiling remains separate from the per-domain address allowance.

The change is relevant if you need more addresses under a domain—for example, distinct addresses for different people or purposes. It does not by itself increase the number of domains an account can use, and Apple has not publicly explained the reason for the change in the cited coverage.

How shared domains work
A custom domain can be shared. Apple says each person with whom a domain is shared can create up to ten personalized email addresses on that domain. That is an allowance for each participant, not a single ten-address pool for everyone sharing it.
Personalized addresses can be used in Mail on devices signed in to the account and at iCloud.com. Apple also says they can be used with Messages, FaceTime, Calendar, and device sign-in.

What you need to set it up
- An iCloud+ subscription and an Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled.
- iCloud Mail set up.
- A domain you own, or the option to purchase a new domain during setup.
An address cannot already be in use with another Apple Account, and managed accounts are not supported. Apple’s setup and eligibility details are in its Custom Email Domain guide.

Three iCloud email features are easy to conflate:
- Custom Email Domain: Personalized addresses use a domain you own or buy, with up to ten addresses per domain under Apple’s current iCloud+ limit.
- Standard iCloud Mail aliases: These are aliases for an iCloud Mail account, not addresses on a custom domain. MacRumors separately reported on October 5, 2026, that the standard alias allowance appeared to increase from three to nine at iCloud.com; the report noted that Apple had not announced the change and its User Guide still showed the former limit. Treat that as a separate, less firmly documented report—not as the custom-domain update. See MacRumors’ report on the alias limit.
- Hide My Email: This iCloud+ feature creates unique, random addresses that forward to a personal email address; you can reply while keeping that personal address private. Apple documents it for use in Safari, Mail, Apple Pay, supported third-party apps, device settings, and iCloud.com. See Apple’s guides to creating unique random addresses and using Hide My Email across devices.
Is iCloud+ worth it for the extra addresses?
The extra addresses may be useful if you already use iCloud+ and need more identities on a custom domain. If you do not have a domain, Apple says one can be purchased during setup; no particular registrar is required by the feature. Whether iCloud+ makes sense depends on your broader needs, including its storage and privacy features, rather than the address limit alone.

Apple describes iCloud+ as “a premium subscription that provides additional storage to keep your photos, videos, files, and more backed up and automatically available across your devices.” Its US iCloud+ page, as displayed October 7, 2026, listed these monthly prices; prices and availability may differ by region:
| US plan | Price shown per month |
|---|---|
| 50GB | $0.99 |
| 200GB | $2.99 |
| 2TB | $9.99 |
| 6TB | $29.99 |
| 12TB | $59.99 |
The Apple iCloud+ page lists Custom Email Domain and Hide My Email among the subscription features and says a plan can be shared with up to five other family members. No published usage figure or named study establishes how many subscribers use custom domains or what effect the higher address allowance will have.
