For discovering shows and episodes, both apps provide broad search and browsing tools, but their official help pages do not establish which service returns more complete or more relevant results.
Use Apple when you need to search by topic or person, search within a known show’s episode list, or jump to a word in an available transcript. Use Spotify when you want podcast results in its general Search, browse featured episodes and categories, or save and download episodes in the same listening workflow. Labels and availability can vary by device, software version, and country.

What the two searches actually do
“Podcast search” can mean several different jobs:
- Finding a show when you know its title.
- Finding any show or episode related to a subject, person, or category.
- Locating an episode in a show you already follow.
- Finding the moment where a subject is discussed inside an episode.
- Saving the result so you can listen later or offline.
Apple and Spotify document the first three jobs. Apple also documents a transcript workflow for the fourth, provided the episode has a searchable transcript. The available official instructions describe features and navigation, not search-engine quality. They do not measure relevance, completeness, ranking accuracy, or the number of shows indexed by either service.

How to find a podcast or topic with Apple Podcasts
1. Search broadly from the main Search screen
On an iPhone, open Apple Podcasts and select Search. Enter a show title, a host or other person, a category, or a topic. Apple’s current iPhone guide describes all four search types and says a result can lead to a show, channel, or individual episode. Follow Apple’s current iPhone guide.
Use specific terms when the subject is crowded. A phrase such as “coastal flood insurance” is more useful than “climate.” Add a person’s name if you are looking for interviews, or combine a topic with a likely format such as “history,” “news,” or “interview.” Search results are a starting point: open the result and check the show’s description, episode title, date, and publisher before committing to an episode.
2. Explore when you do not know the show
Apple documents several discovery routes beyond a typed query. Top Charts organize popular programs by category. New or trending areas, editorial collections, and personalized recommendations provide alternate paths when the exact wording of your topic is unknown. These surfaces can expose programs that a narrow keyword search does not suggest, but Apple’s documentation does not claim that they are complete indexes of every relevant show.
Try discovery in two passes:
- Choose a broad category or an editorial collection to learn the vocabulary used by publishers.
- Return to Search with those more precise terms, then open individual shows or episodes to verify the subject.
3. Search within a known show’s episode list
If you already know the show, open its page rather than searching the entire catalog. Apple’s iPhone guide describes a separate search field within a show’s episode list. Enter a word from the episode title or description, then review the matching entries. Episode sorting and conditional filters are also described, so changing the order or narrowing the list can be useful when a show has years of back episodes. See Apple’s show-page instructions.
This is title- or metadata-level discovery. It does not mean Apple is searching every spoken word in every episode. For that deeper question, use the transcript workflow below.

4. Search an episode transcript when one is available
Apple’s Mac user guide describes opening an episode transcript and searching it for a word or phrase. The practical sequence is:
- Open Apple Podcasts on a Mac and open the episode.
- Display the episode’s transcript when the transcript option is offered.
- Use the transcript’s search control and enter the word or phrase you want to locate.
- Select a matching passage to move to that part of the transcript and episode.
- If you need to send the exact moment to someone else, use Apple’s sharing action for the selected passage; Apple says the shared link can start playback at that point.
Apple does not say that every episode has a transcript. Treat the absence of a transcript control as an availability limitation, not as evidence that the episode never mentions your subject. Transcripts can also reflect recognition or editing errors, so confirm an important quotation by listening to the audio.
5. Follow and download useful results
Following a show adds it to your Apple Podcasts library. Apple’s guide also covers episode filtering and downloads, which lets you separate episodes to hear from those already played or keep selected audio available without a connection. The exact controls can differ between iPhone and Mac, so use the labels shown in your current app version.
How to find a podcast or topic with Spotify
1. Use Spotify’s general Search
Spotify’s Search help page identifies podcasts as a searchable content type. Open Search, enter the show name, host, or subject, and choose the podcast-related results rather than music or another content type. Spotify’s Search instructions.
For a topic, start with a distinctive phrase and then broaden it if the first results are too narrow. Open each candidate’s show or episode page and read its title and description. The official Search page confirms podcast search, but it does not promise that a topic query searches the spoken audio of every episode.

2. Browse featured episodes and categories
Spotify’s podcasts-and-shows help page describes browsing featured episodes and categories. This is useful when you want a guided list rather than a single exact match. Start with a category that fits the subject, inspect featured episodes, and open a show’s page if its premise matches what you need. Read Spotify’s podcast browsing guidance.

A smaller or newer program may be relevant without appearing in a featured section, so combine browsing with a direct keyword search.
3. Open a show’s page to inspect episodes
When you identify a likely show, open its page to see the episodes available there. Spotify’s official instructions describe this show-page route, but the reviewed material does not specify a separate in-show episode-list search field equivalent to Apple’s documented control. If the list is long, use the app’s available sorting, filtering, or device-level text tools only when they are actually shown in your version; do not assume a control is present because another platform has one.
4. Follow, save, and download
Spotify documents following shows, saving episodes, and downloading episodes for offline listening. Follow a show when you want new releases surfaced later; save an individual episode when it is the specific result you want to return to; download it before travel or another period without reliable service. Spotify’s podcast and show instructions.
These actions organize listening after discovery. They do not change what the Search index can find, and the reviewed documentation does not establish that a paid plan is required for the search steps themselves.

Finding a topic inside an episode
Apple’s documented advantage is transcript navigation
If your question is “Where does this episode discuss rent control?” rather than “Which episode is about rent control?”, Apple’s documented Mac transcript search is the clearest supported workflow in this comparison. It can locate a matching word or phrase and let you share a passage-linked playback point when a transcript exists. Apple’s Mac guide.
What Spotify’s documentation does—and does not—say
The reviewed Spotify Search and podcast pages explain finding podcasts, browsing categories and featured episodes, opening shows, following, saving, and downloading. They do not document a transcript search workflow for locating words inside an episode. That omission should be reported precisely: the available help pages do not establish an equivalent feature. It does not prove that no Spotify client, episode, experiment, or regional version can provide one.
A practical fallback when no transcript is available
On either service, search episode titles and descriptions first. If the episode is long and has chapters or a visible outline, use those markers to narrow the listening point. Otherwise, note the episode’s date and work through it manually, using the player’s seek controls. Do not treat a title match as proof that the spoken discussion contains the exact term.

| Browse featured podcast episodes and categories | Spotify | Spotify’s podcast guidance specifically documents featured episodes and category browsing. |

A reliable cross-platform search routine
You do not have to choose one catalog for every search. A repeatable routine reduces false positives and makes the result auditable:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Define the target. Decide whether you need a show, an episode, or a timestamp inside an episode. The last goal requires a transcript or a manual listen-through.
- Start with two or three concrete terms. Combine the subject with a person, place, event, or format. Record alternate spellings and related terms.
- Search Apple Podcasts and Spotify separately. Each app may present different metadata, categories, or available episodes. Do not infer that a missing result is proof the show does not exist.
- Verify the candidate. Check the publisher, episode title, release date, description, and any transcript or chapter information. A keyword in a show description can be incidental.
- Use the known-show tools. In Apple, search the show’s episode list. In Spotify, open the show page and inspect its available episodes using the controls your version exposes.
- Search the transcript where possible. On Apple Podcasts for Mac, open the transcript and search the phrase. If no transcript is offered, switch to chapters or manual playback.
- Save the evidence. Follow the show for future releases, save or download the episode, and note the episode title and time position. Apple can share a selected transcript passage with a playback start point when that feature is available.
Search pitfalls and how to handle them
Assuming a result list is complete
Neither service’s cited help pages publishes a completeness or relevance benchmark. Search rankings can change as catalogs, metadata, and app versions change. Use both apps when the subject matters, and verify promising results instead of treating the first result as definitive.

Confusing show discovery with episode-content search
A topic query may match a show title, publisher description, episode title, or spoken content. The official Apple transcript workflow is the only documented method in this comparison that directly searches words in the episode itself, and it depends on transcript availability.
Searching for a phrase that publishers do not use
Try synonyms, older terminology, abbreviations, and the names of people or events associated with the subject. Browse a category to learn how publishers label the topic, then rerun the search with those terms.
Expecting identical catalogs or controls
Episode availability, sorting controls, transcript presence, and labels can differ by app, device, software build, and market. A control described in a help page may move or appear only after an update; use the current screen labels on your device.
Relying on an unverified transcript
Transcript search is fast, but speech recognition and punctuation can be imperfect. Listen to the surrounding audio before quoting, citing, or acting on a passage.
Version, region, and availability notes
The Apple iPhone instructions cited here are for iOS 27, and the Apple Podcasts Mac guide is for macOS 27. The Spotify Search page cited here is a Canada-region support page, while the podcasts-and-shows page is UK-region support. Apple and Spotify can change labels, navigation, transcript coverage, and feature availability by software version, device, and market. Check the live app before documenting a screen or promising that a particular control will appear for every reader.
The comparison therefore supports a feature-based choice, not an objective winner. Apple has the clearest documented path for searching inside an available episode transcript and for searching a known show’s episode list. Spotify clearly supports podcast search, category and featured-episode browsing, show pages, following, saving, and offline downloads. For overall result quality, neither service’s cited documentation supplies enough evidence to declare one superior.
