Apple Music is the safer choice for the highest-quality playback Apple officially documents on Apple TV 4K. Apple documents ALAC lossless, a Hi-Res Lossless tier on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), and Dolby Atmos when the Apple TV, app content, and HDMI-connected audio equipment are compatible. Spotify Premium advertises lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, but the Spotify support pages available for this comparison do not confirm that lossless is exposed in the Spotify app on Apple TV. Your actual result still depends on the Apple TV model, tvOS, network, track version, and connected speakers or receiver.
The short answer: which service is better on Apple TV?
If your priority is a clearly documented Apple TV 4K path to lossless and immersive audio, Apple Music has the stronger case. Apple publishes Apple TV-specific instructions, supported audio tiers, and Dolby Atmos requirements. Spotify publishes a capable service-level lossless specification, but its current lossless documentation discusses mobile, desktop, tablet, and compatible Spotify Connect devices rather than confirming direct lossless playback in the Apple TV app.

That is a documentation difference, not a controlled listening-test result. A larger sample-rate number does not automatically sound better, and neither service is guaranteed to deliver every track in its maximum format. The sensible decision is to match the service to your equipment and the features you actually use.

What Apple Music can deliver through Apple TV 4K
Three quality choices in the Music settings
Apple’s Apple TV guide lists High Quality AAC, Lossless ALAC, and Hi-Res Lossless ALAC. The lossless option reaches 24-bit/48 kHz, while the listed Hi-Res option reaches 24-bit/192 kHz. Those are service and settings ceilings, not a promise that every album is available at that resolution or that every Apple TV model and receiver can pass it unchanged.
Apple identifies ALAC as its lossless codec. Lossless playback depends on the song version, network conditions, and speaker capability. A remaster offered only in a lower-resolution source cannot be upgraded by changing the setting, and an output device that cannot accept the stream can force a different result.
Apple TV model and connection requirements
Apple’s current US lossless support instructions say Apple TV 4K needs current tvOS and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver for lossless playback. The same page says Hi-Res Lossless is available on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). A separate Apple TV settings guide displays a Hi-Res Lossless choice without repeating the generation limit, so check the actual model and the options shown on your device rather than assuming that every Apple TV 4K generation exposes the highest tier.
The HDMI requirement matters because the Apple TV is part of a chain: Apple TV 4K, HDMI cable, television or receiver, and speakers. If the receiver is the component that performs digital-to-analog conversion, it must support the format you select. A standard, functioning HDMI cable is the relevant connection; Apple’s documentation does not establish a need for a premium cable category.

Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio
Apple TV 4K can automatically choose the highest format supported by both the content and your home-entertainment setup. Dolby Atmos therefore appears only when the track or video has an Atmos version and the connected equipment can decode or render it.
Apple lists several compatible arrangements: one or two HomePod speakers, an Atmos-capable television, an Atmos soundbar paired with a compatible television, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver. HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. With compatible AirPods or Beats headphones, Apple’s Music app can provide Spatial Audio; speakers and receivers need Atmos capability for a room-based setup.
Atmos is separate from the ALAC sample-rate setting. A track can be lossless without being Atmos, and an Atmos mix can have a different delivery format. Choose the experience you want, then verify that the playback indicator and receiver mode reflect it.

The Premium service specification
Spotify says Premium users can listen in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC across most of its catalog. “Most” is a catalog qualification: availability depends on the particular recording and version. Spotify also lists Premium Very High quality at approximately 320 kbit/s for situations where lossless is unavailable or not selected.

Those numbers describe Spotify’s available quality modes. They do not prove that every client app exposes every mode, nor do they show what your television, receiver, or soundbar ultimately outputs.
Why Apple TV support remains unconfirmed here
Spotify’s lossless help page names mobile, desktop, tablet, and compatible Spotify Connect devices. It says third-party-device quality must be selected through Spotify Connect settings and warns that not all devices support lossless. The cited guidance does not identify the Apple TV app or state that an Apple TV receives lossless directly.
Consequently, do not infer Apple TV lossless support from the generic phrase “compatible device.” To establish it for your setup, look for an explicit Apple TV statement from Spotify or verify the behavior on your exact Apple TV app version and output chain. Until then, treat the FLAC ceiling as a Spotify service specification rather than a confirmed Apple TV playback guarantee.

Apple TV features beyond audio resolution
Apple Music controls available in Apple’s TV guide
Apple’s Apple TV Music documentation covers more than format selection. The app includes lyrics display, Apple Music Sing controls, listening history, Sound Check, Dolby Atmos set to automatic, AutoMix, and Crossfade. The settings guide notes that AutoMix and Crossfade are unavailable when Hi-Res Lossless is enabled, so the highest-resolution choice can change how transitions work.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Sound Check is intended to reduce large volume differences between songs. It is a playback convenience, not a way to increase fidelity. Lyrics and Sing are useful if Apple TV is also serving as a social or karaoke-style screen, while listening history helps keep recommendations synchronized across Apple devices.
What can be said about Spotify’s Apple TV feature set
The cited Spotify pages establish Premium quality modes and Spotify Connect behavior, but they do not provide a complete inventory of Spotify’s Apple TV interface. It would be inaccurate to conclude from that omission that Spotify lacks lyrics, transitions, or another particular control. Compare the current app on your Apple TV for the features that matter to you, and separate interface preference from the independently documented audio path.
How to configure Apple Music for the best documented Apple TV result
- Identify the hardware. On Apple TV, open Settings and check the device information so you know whether it is an Apple TV 4K and, if applicable, which generation. Confirm that your television, AV receiver, soundbar, or speakers support the format you intend to use.
- Update tvOS. Install the current tvOS release available for the device. Apple’s lossless instructions make current software a prerequisite.
- Use the appropriate HDMI route. For Apple’s documented lossless setup, connect Apple TV 4K by HDMI to an AV receiver. If your receiver is connected through the television, verify that the television and its return-audio path support the signal you are trying to pass.
- Open the audio-quality controls. Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality. Select Lossless or, on a supported Apple TV 4K generation, Hi-Res Lossless. If a choice is missing, treat that as a compatibility or software clue rather than forcing the setting through another device.
- Set Atmos behavior. In the Music or audio settings, leave Dolby Atmos on Automatic when your receiver, soundbar, television, or HomePod arrangement supports it. Play a title known to have an Atmos version and check the receiver or speaker indicator.
- Check transitions. If you choose Hi-Res Lossless, review AutoMix and Crossfade settings. Apple documents that those transition features are unavailable in that mode.
- Test with a known source. Use the same album or track version when comparing settings. Allow playback to stabilize over your network, and avoid judging a format from a title that is available only in a different master.
How to evaluate Spotify on your Apple TV without overclaiming
- Confirm the account and app. Lossless is a Premium benefit according to Spotify’s cited support page. Make sure the Apple TV app is signed into the intended account and is current.
- Check the playback route. Direct playback in the Apple TV app and casting through Spotify Connect are different paths. Spotify’s documentation specifically discusses selecting third-party-device quality through Spotify Connect, so do not assume the direct app uses the same controls.
- Look for an explicit quality control. If the Apple TV app exposes a lossless option or an output indicator, record what it says. If it does not, the service-level FLAC specification alone cannot establish that the Apple TV is receiving FLAC.
- Verify the receiving equipment. A compatible Connect device, television, receiver, or soundbar must support the selected quality. If any component resamples or converts the stream, the final signal may differ from the source setting.
- Compare like with like. Use the same recording, loudness, and speaker volume. A louder stream can seem better even when the codecs are not responsible for the preference.
Why sample-rate figures do not decide the audible winner
Bit depth and sample rate are technical specifications. They indicate how a service encodes or delivers a source, not how much improvement a listener will hear in a particular room. Your speakers, room acoustics, listening distance, volume matching, and the mastering of the selected track can matter more than the nominal ceiling.
Apple says its High Quality AAC audio is “virtually indistinguishable from the original sources” in the Apple TV settings guide. Spotify’s published FLAC ceiling is technically lossless, but no controlled side-by-side listening test is established here. Therefore, it is not defensible to declare a universal audible winner solely from the numbers.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you hear a difference, first check that you are comparing the same master, that loudness is matched, and that the receiver has not applied different processing modes. Disable extra equalization or surround processing during a format comparison, then re-enable the settings you prefer for normal listening.
Choosing by equipment and listening priorities
Choose Apple Music when documented Apple TV integration is the priority
- You own an Apple TV 4K and an HDMI-connected receiver or Atmos-capable speaker system.
- You want Apple’s documented path to ALAC lossless and, on a supported generation, Hi-Res Lossless.
- Dolby Atmos, Spatial Audio with compatible headphones, lyrics, Sing, Sound Check, or Apple TV transition controls are important.
- You prefer a single set of Apple TV settings that exposes the audio-quality choice and Atmos mode.
Choose Spotify when its ecosystem or catalog is the deciding factor
- Your household already organizes listening around Spotify accounts and Spotify Connect.
- You value Spotify’s Premium lossless specification and are willing to verify whether your particular Apple TV route exposes it.
- Your playback device is a documented compatible Connect endpoint, or you mainly listen on phones, tablets, or computers where Spotify’s lossless guidance explicitly applies.
- The Apple TV interface features you need are present in the current Spotify app, even though the cited support pages do not provide a full feature list.
Stay with the service that fits your actual recordings
Neither support set establishes a universal catalog winner, and subscription availability can vary by country. Check whether the albums, versions, and playlists you use are offered in your region before changing services. A technically higher ceiling is irrelevant if the recording you want is unavailable or if your speakers cannot reproduce the difference.
Troubleshooting common Apple TV audio problems
The Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless option is missing
- Confirm that the device is an Apple TV 4K and that tvOS is current.
- Check the Apple TV generation; Apple specifically associates Hi-Res Lossless availability with 3rd generation or later on its lossless support page.
- Open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality again after updating.
- Inspect the HDMI path and receiver capabilities. Apple’s documented lossless setup uses an HDMI connection to an AV receiver.
- Remember that the settings guide’s format list is not a guarantee that every song is offered in every tier.
Atmos does not appear on the receiver
- Confirm the track has an Atmos mix; ordinary stereo content will not become Atmos through a setting.
- Use a television, soundbar, receiver, or HomePod arrangement that Apple lists as compatible.
- Set Dolby Atmos to Automatic and check that the receiver is not locked to a stereo-only mode.
- Do not use HomePod mini as evidence that Atmos is malfunctioning; Apple says that model does not support Dolby Atmos.
Spotify sounds the same after enabling a higher setting elsewhere
- Verify whether playback is direct in the Apple TV app or routed through Spotify Connect.
- Check for an explicit lossless control or indicator on the Apple TV route. Spotify’s generic device guidance does not confirm Apple TV support.
- Match volume and recording version before drawing a listening conclusion.
- Check network stability and the capabilities of the receiving device, since Spotify warns that not all third-party devices support lossless.
Bottom line for an Apple TV buyer
Apple Music is the more defensible recommendation for Apple TV 4K if you want a documented, device-specific route to lossless and Dolby Atmos. Apple explains the required tvOS, HDMI, settings path, model-generation caveat, and compatible output equipment. Spotify Premium’s up-to-24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC specification is meaningful at the service level, but the cited Spotify documentation does not confirm that the Apple TV app itself delivers that lossless stream.
