Apple Maps vs Google Street View: Which Offers Better Home Privacy Controls?

Google Street View offers the clearer documented control for hiding an entire home. Google provides a dedicated reporting workflow, limits house-blur requests to the owner or tenant, and states that newly blurred imagery is excluded from generative-AI prompting. Apple Maps Look Around also supports requests to blur a home, but Apple describes a more team-mediated process and says blurred imagery may still be used to improve Apple Maps and other Apple products and services.

Both services automatically blur identifiable faces and license plates. The practical choice depends on whether you need a clearly defined self-service house-blur process (Google) or prefer to remain within Apple’s mapping and privacy-support channels (Apple).

At a glance: which service gives you more control?

Privacy question Apple Maps Look Around Google Street View
Automatic protection Image-blurring technology is used for faces and license plates before Look Around imagery is published. Identifiable faces and license plates are automatically blurred.
Whole-home blur Apple accepts requests to blur your own house, but public guidance routes the request through Maps reporting or an Image Collection contact channel. Users can request the entire house to be blurred through the Street View reporting workflow.
Who may request a house blur? Apple’s guidance refers to a person’s own house; the reporting process can be associated with the reporter’s Apple Account. Google says only the home owner or tenant is eligible to request a house blur.
Submission experience Open the location in Maps, use the available Look Around report or privacy route, and provide property context. Apple also lists an Image Collection contact route. Open the location in Street View, choose the image’s reporting control, select the house-blur option, frame the property, and submit.
Use of imagery after blurring Apple says blurred imagery may still be used to improve Apple Maps and other Apple products and services. Google says newly blurred Street View imagery is excluded from generative-AI prompting from that point onward.
Local availability Look Around coverage must be checked at the specific address. Street View coverage and the available imagery dates must be checked at the specific address.

This is a documentation-based privacy comparison, not a test of image quality, coverage, review speed, or how often either company captures a particular street.

What both services protect automatically

Neither platform expects residents to identify every visible face or vehicle registration plate themselves. Apple says it applies image-blurring algorithms to faces and license plates in Look Around imagery before publication. Google likewise states that its technology automatically blurs identifiable faces and license plates in Street View.

Automatic redaction is narrower than hiding a property. It is designed to make an individual face or plate unreadable while leaving the surrounding scene available for navigation. A home, driveway, fence, outbuilding, number plaque, or other feature can remain recognizable even when people and plates are protected. If your concern is that the building itself can be identified, use the separate house-blur process rather than relying on automatic redaction.

Apple Maps Look Around: how to request a house blur

Apple’s public guidance confirms that a person can ask for their own house to be blurred in Look Around. Apple also accepts requests involving faces and license plates, including cases where automated processing did not produce the result a resident expects.

Use the in-app location first

  1. Open Apple Maps and search for the exact street address.
  2. Enter Look Around if the address has imagery. Look Around is not available at every location, so the absence of the feature may mean that Apple has no imagery there rather than that a privacy request is needed.
  3. Display the view that shows the property. Note the side of the street, the entrance, and any nearby landmarks so Apple can identify the correct structure.
  4. Use the available report or privacy option for the imagery. The wording and placement can vary by device, operating-system version, and region.
  5. Describe the request as a blur for your own house and include precise context, such as the street number, the visible frontage, and the direction of view.
  6. Submit the report and retain any confirmation or case details supplied by Maps.

Use Apple’s Image Collection contact route when the in-app path is unavailable

Apple’s Image Collection information page also invites comments, privacy questions, and requests to blur a face, license plate, or the requester’s own house. This is useful when the report control is difficult to find, the imagery is visible on another Apple device, or the request needs more explanation than the in-app form allows.

Give Apple enough information to distinguish the property from neighboring homes. A request that identifies only a neighborhood or a general street may require follow-up. Do not assume that a request for one camera angle automatically describes every view of the building; identify the house and the visible imagery as clearly as possible.

What information Apple associates with a report

Apple’s Maps issue-reporting privacy notice says a report involving a home or a Look Around blur request can be associated with the reporter’s Apple Account. Apple may collect contextual map information, including the map image, zoom level, and the last search term used, to understand and handle the report. That information explains why a report may not be anonymous in the same way as simply viewing a map.

Apple also says it pays special attention to sensitive places such as places of worship and hospitals when preparing imagery. That general protection does not replace a request for a private residence that you want obscured.

Google Street View: how to blur your home

Google documents a more explicit house-blur procedure. Its current help guidance says only the home owner or tenant is eligible to request a house blur. If you are a neighbor, visitor, or prospective buyer, you should not submit the request as though you held that status.

Submit the request from the image

  1. Open Google Maps and search for the property address.
  2. Drag the Street View figure onto the street, or open an available Street View preview for the location.
  3. Position the panorama so the house and the surrounding context are visible. If several viewpoints show the property, start with the clearest view and note the others.
  4. Open the image’s reporting control, commonly labeled as reporting a problem with the image.
  5. Choose the option for blurring a house or other property feature rather than reporting only a face or license plate.
  6. Adjust the report frame so it covers the correct house without unnecessarily including unrelated properties.
  7. Submit the report using accurate contact and eligibility information. Identify yourself as the owner or tenant when that is requested.

Google’s Street View policy also describes the same reporting route for asking that an entire car, house, or person be blurred. A house request is therefore different from asking Google to correct a single automatically blurred detail.

Before you submit

  • Check that you are looking at the correct address, especially in dense neighborhoods or apartment complexes.
  • Use the panorama’s date or available historical imagery controls to see whether older captures also show the property.
  • Describe distinctive features that help Google locate the right building, such as a corner lot, attached garage, or entrance facing a side street.
  • Request only the area that creates the privacy concern; a tightly framed report is easier to interpret than an entire block.

Google’s published materials do not provide a universal completion-time guarantee. A submission is a request for review, not a promise that the blur will appear on a particular date.

What a house blur does—and does not do

A successful blur changes how the specified imagery is displayed to other viewers. It does not remove the physical building, erase public records, or prevent someone from photographing the property independently. Street-level imagery may also have been captured from more than one route or on more than one date.

Blur controls are also separate from account, search, or map-history settings. Hiding a house in a street-view panorama does not delete an address from navigation databases, cadastral records, real-estate listings, or images uploaded by users. If your concern involves one of those sources, it requires a separate request to the relevant service.

Does blurring stop AI use or future imagery?

Google’s stated treatment

Google says newly blurred Street View imagery is excluded from generative-AI prompting from the point of blurring onward. That is a specific statement about use in generative-AI prompting; it should not be read as a guarantee that every copy, derivative, cache, or unrelated image of the property disappears from all Google systems.

Apple’s stated treatment

Apple says blurred imagery may still be used to improve Apple Maps and other Apple products and services. Apple’s public wording therefore distinguishes visual protection in the published Look Around view from restrictions on internal product-improvement use. A blur request should not be presented as a request to delete every underlying image or prohibit all future processing.

Neither service promises a permanent shield from new captures

A company can collect new street imagery after a request has been processed. The existing blur may not automatically describe a later capture unless the company’s systems apply the same protection to that imagery. Check the current view after processing and report a new unprotected capture if one appears.

Coverage and imagery dates matter at your address

There is no single global coverage percentage that makes one service more private for every household. Look Around and Street View availability varies by country, city, road, and capture date. Some addresses have no street-level imagery, some have only one viewpoint, and others have historical imagery from several years.

Good choose when you are in the bus, elevator, metro or other public occasions. To assess exposure, check the exact address in both services. Look for side views, rear approaches, cul-de-sacs, neighboring streets, and historical imagery. A property that is absent from one service may still be visible in the other, and a house hidden in the newest panorama may remain visible in an older one until that imagery is also addressed.

Which service is better for specific privacy priorities?

Choose Google when you want the clearest documented control

Google is the stronger choice when your priority is a clearly described, self-service whole-house request with an explicit eligibility rule. Its documentation names the house option, identifies the owner or tenant as the eligible requester, and explains the reporting control used for the submission.

Choose Apple’s route when your priority is Apple support

Apple is a reasonable path when the relevant imagery is in Look Around and you prefer to handle the matter through Apple Maps or Apple’s Image Collection contact channel. Apple confirms that it accepts requests for a person’s own house and explains how map-report context can be associated with an Apple Account.

Use both when the property appears in both databases

Blurring a home in one mapping service does not affect the other. If both platforms show the property, submit separate requests and check each service after review. The requests can use the same property description, but each company needs its own image reference and case information.

Common problems and practical fixes

The report button is missing

Confirm that you are viewing street-level imagery rather than a standard map or a user-uploaded photograph. Update the mapping app or open the service in a desktop browser, then try the report control from the image itself. For Apple, use the Image Collection contact route if the in-app privacy path is unavailable.

The wrong building is shown

Return to the exact address, move the panorama until the frontage is centered, and include landmarks that separate the property from its neighbors. Avoid submitting a broad frame that covers several homes.

Only one angle is blurred

Check nearby viewpoints and historical imagery. If another official panorama still exposes the same house, make a new, precise report that identifies that view. A blur applied to one image does not prove that every capture has been processed.

You are not the owner or tenant

Google’s stated eligibility rule does not include unrelated third parties. You can still report an obvious face or license-plate privacy problem, but do not claim owner or tenant status for a house request. Apple’s guidance similarly focuses on requests for the person’s own house.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expect a fixed completion date

Neither cited Apple nor Google material publishes a universal processing-time service-level agreement. Keep the confirmation details, monitor the image periodically, and avoid relying on a promised number of days.

A privacy checklist for homeowners and tenants

  • Check the address in both Apple Maps Look Around and Google Street View.
  • Inspect current and historical imagery, including approaches from nearby streets.
  • Decide whether the problem is an identifiable person or plate, the entire building, or both.
  • Use the service-specific house-blur path for the property itself.
  • Submit the request as the owner or tenant where Google requires that status.
  • Provide a precise address, viewpoint, and description of the structure.
  • Save the confirmation or report reference.
  • Recheck the location after processing and report any separate unprotected view.
  • Remember that a map blur does not remove public records, user photos, or independent photography.

Verdict

For a homeowner or tenant who wants the most clearly documented way to obscure an entire house, Google Street View has the advantage. Its owner-or-tenant rule, dedicated house option, and stated exclusion of newly blurred imagery from generative-AI prompting make the control easier to understand.

Apple Maps Look Around still provides a meaningful house-blur option, automatic face and license-plate protection, and a direct Apple privacy contact route. Its process is less explicit about the mechanics of whole-house requests, and Apple says blurred imagery may continue to support improvements to Apple Maps and other Apple products and services. If your property appears in both services, privacy requires separate requests to both.
