Apple’s U.S. launch price started at $5,499; Tom’s Guide’s reviewed configuration was valued at $12,299. The right question is not whether it is fast, but whether your software and workload can use enough of that headroom to earn back the cost.
What you’re buying: M5 Ultra configurations and price
Apple announced the 2026 M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with orders opening that day and customer availability stated to begin September 22. Those are launch-time details, not a guarantee of current stock or delivery dates. Apple said the 512GB memory configuration was expected in late October. Apple’s U.S. announcement-time starting price was $5,499, with an education price of $5,099. Tom’s Guide valued its review unit at $12,299, configured with 256GB of memory and 4TB of storage. The figures describe different configurations and come from their respective publication dates; upgrades substantially change the total, so neither is a universal current quote.

Apple lists the M5 Ultra with a 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU as the base configuration, and offers a configurable 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU version. The base listing includes 96GB of unified memory; 256GB and 512GB are configurable with the higher CPU/GPU build. Storage choices
The SSD starts at 1TB and can be configured to 2TB, 4TB, 8TB or 16TB. Consider the internal capacity against your active projects and workflow: choosing a larger SSD or memory tier increases the purchase price, while external storage is another option for media libraries and archives. The sources here do not establish the speed of any specific external drive with this Mac.
How fast is the M5 Ultra in review testing?
Tom’s Guide’s September 21, 2026 review tested a unit it described as having a 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 256GB of memory and 4TB of storage. Its results are measurements of that configuration and those tests, not a promise that every app or configuration will perform identically.

Tom’s Guide also reported 51 fps in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, 73 fps in Borderlands 3 and 77 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at its stated test settings. Its Alienware comparison desktop was faster in two of the compared games and slower in one. The outlet’s selected comparisons with an M4 Max Mac Studio were not fully like-for-like, so they should not be read as a clean measure of the generational difference. Apple claimed up to 4.3x AI performance, up to 1.8x graphics performance and up to 1.3x CPU performance against the comparison it specified in its August 25 announcement. Those are Apple’s claims, not independent benchmark findings. They may help explain the product’s positioning, but your results will depend on the work, software and comparison system.

Ports and displays for a demanding desk
The M5 Ultra is designed to connect a large workstation setup directly. Apple lists six Thunderbolt 5 ports—four on the rear and two on the front—plus two rear USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, a front UHS-II SDXC card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. That combination suits workflows that need multiple fast peripherals, wired networking, card imports or several displays without relying entirely on adapters.
Display limits depend on resolution and refresh rate. Apple lists support for up to eight external displays at up to 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz, or up to four at up to 8K/60Hz, 5K/120Hz or 4K/240Hz. Check Apple’s connection notes and your monitors’ exact modes before planning a setup; the maximum display count does not mean every resolution and refresh-rate combination can be used simultaneously.

Who should buy the M5 Ultra Mac Studio?
It makes sense when the workload uses the headroom
Consider the Ultra if your regular work is limited by compute, memory capacity, graphics performance, or the ability to attach a demanding display and peripheral setup. Examples include large video projects, 3D work, local AI tasks, scientific computing or other professional workloads—but only where your specific applications support and benefit from the relevant hardware. A high memory ceiling is valuable when a real project needs it, not simply because it is available.

Check the memory and storage requirements of your projects, the software’s hardware support, and the displays and peripherals you intend to connect. If you cannot identify a recurring bottleneck the Ultra would remove, a less expensive desktop is likely a better fit.

It is hard to justify for ordinary desktop use
Browsing, email, office tasks, video playback and other everyday computing do not call for this much workstation capacity. Tom’s Guide found the machine far beyond what its reviewer needed for a routine browser-and-video workload, and suggested the less expensive M6 Mac mini for everyday desktop use. That is the reviewer’s recommendation, not a rule for every buyer; the broader point is that paying for unused capacity delivers little practical benefit.
Price and quiet operation are separate considerations
Tom’s Guide identified the steep price as the leading drawback, while describing the computer as cool and quiet during its demanding gaming and video-rendering tests. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled acoustic measurement or a guarantee for every environment and workload. If the machine will run under sustained load near a desk, seek workload-specific noise information rather than treating “quiet” as a measured specification.
Verdict
The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is a serious workstation for people whose software can use its compute, memory, storage and connectivity options. It is not an automatic upgrade for anyone who wants a fast Mac: the gap between Apple’s $5,499 U.S. launch-time starting price and the $12,299 review configuration shows how quickly a tailored build can become a much larger investment. Choose it when you can name the work that needs its headroom and justify the cost; otherwise, spend less on a desktop that better matches your actual workload.
