Apple held 37% of the operator channel, compared with Samsung’s 34%. That finding is about carrier sales—not proof that Apple led every measure of Europe’s overall smartphone market.
Did Apple outsell Samsung in Europe?
In the European operator channel, yes: Counterpoint Research reported Apple at 37% share in Q2 2026 and Samsung at 34%. A year earlier, Apple had 33% and Samsung 39%, so the year-over-year comparison shows a four-percentage-point gain for Apple and a five-point decline for Samsung in this channel. The figures are market shares, not year-over-year unit-growth rates. Counterpoint’s October 7, 2026 insight identifies Jan Stryjak as its author; 9to5Mac’s October 6 report gives the shares and comparison.

“Carrier” or “operator” sales refer to phones sold through mobile network operators, often alongside a service contract. This is distinct from open-market purchases through retailers and other sellers. The reported channel result does not establish that Apple led all European smartphone sales, shipments, or every national market.

Counterpoint’s October insight reported that Europe’s operator-channel smartphone sales fell 4% year over year in Q2 2026. The decline was smaller than the 11% fall in open-market sales and the 8% decline in total smartphone sales reported in the same insight. These are sales comparisons; they should not be conflated with separate shipment figures.

The shipment total comes from a separate Counterpoint update, which described 35 million units as the lowest second-quarter shipment tally in three years. It also said Western Europe performed better than expected while Eastern Europe saw a significant decline. Shipments measure devices sent into a market; sales figures describe purchases. The 10% shipment decline therefore is not a replacement for the 8% total-sales decline.
Why did the operator channel prove more resilient?
Counterpoint Associate Director Jan Stryjak attributed the smaller decline to the channel’s higher-end mix, premium-brand skew and greater prevalence of contract purchases. He also linked weakness at the low end of the market to the 2026 memory-price crisis. This is an analyst’s explanation of the pattern, not a quantified measure of how much any one factor contributed.

What could happen next?
Stryjak said the operator channel could continue gaining share over the next few quarters if pressure on lower-priced phones persists. He also noted that stronger promotions by independent retailers could help offset price rises and revive open-market demand. These are conditional possibilities, not established outcomes.

What the figures do—and do not—show
- Apple’s lead is specifically in European operator-channel smartphone share in Q2 2026; it should not be generalized to every definition of total-market leadership.
- The share comparison shows Apple moving from 33% to 37% and Samsung from 39% to 34% between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026.
- The reported sources do not identify a winning phone model or establish that a particular iPhone caused Apple’s share gain. Samsung Galaxy phones are the direct brand comparison, but no model-level result is provided.
