Short answer: For U.S. shoppers, the original iPhone Upgrade Program is no longer open to new members. Apple stopped offering it when Apple Upgrade launched on July 28, 2026. Existing members can continue their Citizens One loans, while new buyers must choose among an outright purchase, other financing, carrier offers, or Apple’s separate Klarna lease.
Buying outright gives you immediate ownership and complete control over when to keep, sell, trade, or replace the phone. The former Upgrade Program spread the device and a selected AppleCare+ plan over 24 months at 0% APR and created a structured upgrade route after 12 payments, but it required credit approval, continuous coverage, an acceptable return, and a new loan application. There is no universal “cheaper” answer: model, storage, tax location, protection, holding period, carrier discount, damage, and resale assumptions determine the result.

The decision in one table
| Question | Former U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program | Buying an iPhone outright |
|---|---|---|
| Availability for a new buyer | Closed to new U.S. enrollment after Apple’s July 28, 2026 announcement | Available through Apple and other sellers, subject to the model and stock offered |
| Payment structure | 24-month, 0% APR installment loan covering the full retail price of an eligible iPhone and a selected AppleCare+ plan | One-time device payment, plus applicable tax and any separately selected protection |
| Ownership | Apple says an existing member owns the phone after 24 payments; upgrading earlier requires returning it | You own the phone after paying for it and choose when to keep, sell, trade, or replace it |
| Earliest program upgrade | After the equivalent of 12 installments, if all other conditions are met | Whenever you choose, provided you can fund the replacement |
| Credit checks | Required for the original loan and for a replacement loan | A cash purchase does not involve approval for the former program |
| Condition requirement | Phone had to be returned in good physical and working condition; damage could lead to service charges | You can keep a damaged phone, repair it, or sell it under the terms of the buyer or trade-in service |
The former program’s monthly figure was not a device-only price: it financed AppleCare+ as part of the loan. Comparing that payment with an outright phone price without adding equivalent protection produces a misleading result.
Is the iPhone Upgrade Program still available?
No—not for new U.S. customers. In its July 28, 2026 announcement, Apple said the U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program would end with the launch of Apple Upgrade. Apple’s current program information directs existing members to finish their current loans or select a different way to obtain their next device. Do not treat an old sign-up page or a previous article as evidence that a new application can still be submitted.

How the former program worked
The loan included the phone and AppleCare+
A qualified applicant applied for a 24-month installment loan at 0% APR for the full retail price of an eligible iPhone plus a selected AppleCare+ plan. Apple required a credit check and activation with an eligible carrier. Depending on whether the purchase was made online or in an Apple Store, applicable taxes or fees could be handled separately rather than included in the financed amount.
That structure explains why a program payment cannot be compared directly with an unlocked phone’s sticker price. A fair comparison must include the protection cost on the outright side, or remove it from both sides if the buyer intentionally wants no coverage.
When the upgrade option became available
The member could exercise the upgrade option after paying the equivalent of at least 12 installments. After six regularly scheduled payments, the member could accelerate payments to reach the 12-payment equivalent. Reaching the payment threshold alone was not enough: the account had to be in good standing, AppleCare+ had to remain continuously active, and the phone had to pass the return requirements.
What happened during an upgrade
- Confirm eligibility. The member needed the equivalent of 12 payments, good standing, and continuous AppleCare+ coverage.
- Apply for a new loan. The replacement iPhone required a new 24-month loan application and another credit check.
- Prepare the old phone. Apple required the device to be in good physical and working condition. Damage could require repair or service charges before the upgrade.
- Return the device as directed. Apple paid the remaining balance on the old loan only after the upgrade was completed under the program conditions.
- Meet the return deadline. Failure to return the old phone within 14 days could reinstate the original loan.
The practical trade-off was straightforward: the program made frequent replacement more predictable, but the member surrendered the current phone instead of keeping a paid-down asset. The next loan also remained subject to approval.

What buying an iPhone outright means
An outright buyer pays the listed price for a chosen model and storage configuration, then owns the device. The buyer decides whether to keep it for one year, several years, or indefinitely; sell it privately; trade it in; or pass it to someone else. There is no program rule requiring an upgrade date or a return to Apple.
Apple’s U.S. shopping prices vary by model, storage tier, promotions, purchase date, and tax location. Some advertised prices reflect a connectivity discount that requires connecting the phone with a selected carrier at purchase. That is not the same assumption as an unconditional unlocked price. Record the exact model, storage, date, carrier condition, and pre-tax price when making your calculation.

If you would have selected AppleCare+ under the former program, add the price of the comparable plan to the outright total. If you would not have bought protection, do not silently compare an uninsured outright phone with a financed phone that included it.
How to calculate total cost fairly
There is no published average saving or universal break-even point for these choices. The required variables differ for every buyer, so use a defined ownership horizon and write down the assumptions before comparing totals.
Outright-purchase equation
Outright total = device price + applicable tax + selected protection costs − resale or trade-in proceeds, if you include a clearly estimated amount.

Resale proceeds are an estimate, not guaranteed savings. They depend on condition, storage, demand, timing, and the buyer or trade-in provider. If you plan to keep the phone beyond the comparison period, show the result both with and without a hypothetical resale value rather than presenting one estimate as fact.
Former-program equation
Former Upgrade Program total for the comparison period = installments paid + applicable taxes, fees, and service costs.
If the member upgraded before 24 payments, the returned phone should not be counted as an asset retained by the household. The program’s value came from the structured replacement option, not from keeping the old device for later resale. Include repair charges or other costs if the phone’s condition prevented a qualifying return.
Use the same scenario on both sides
- Choose one exact iPhone model and storage tier.
- Choose a holding period, such as 12, 24, or 36 months.
- Use the same tax location and identify whether a carrier-connected discount applies.
- Decide whether equivalent AppleCare+ coverage belongs in both totals.
- State whether the outright buyer sells or trades the phone at the end of the period.
- For a former-program scenario, state whether the member upgrades at 12 payments or completes all 24 payments.
- List damage, repair, tax, and service-fee assumptions separately instead of hiding them inside a monthly figure.
The result is a scenario calculation, not a savings statistic. Without a model, configuration, location, protection choice, usage horizon, and resale assumption, a precise dollar answer would be invented.
Flexibility: where the choices differ
Ownership and resale
Outright ownership leaves every exit route open: keep the phone, sell it, trade it, or give it away. A former program member who upgraded had to return the financed phone under the program’s conditions. A member who instead completed all 24 payments kept the device, according to Apple’s program information.

Replacement timing
The former program offered a defined path after 12 equivalent payments, including accelerated payments after six scheduled installments. That convenience came with eligibility checks and a return obligation. An outright buyer can replace the phone at any time, but must pay for the replacement or arrange separate financing.
Protection and damage
AppleCare+ was selected when joining the former program, financed with the phone, and had to remain active for an upgrade. Damage could trigger repair or service charges. An outright buyer chooses coverage independently and can decide whether repairing, keeping, or selling a damaged phone makes financial sense.
Credit and approval risk
The original program loan and every replacement loan required credit checks. A member could reach the payment threshold and still face a new approval decision. Paying the full outright price avoids that program-loan approval step, although a buyer who uses a separate financing product may face that product’s own requirements.
Carrier assumptions
Compare carrier terms on an equal basis. If an advertised Apple price depends on connecting with a selected carrier, do not compare it with an unconditional unlocked price without labeling the difference. Carrier promotions, trade-in credits, and service commitments can change the effective cost independently of the phone’s listed price.

Existing U.S. members are not required to erase their history or immediately return a phone. Apple says they can continue making payments on their current Citizens One loans. After 24 payments, Apple says the member owns the iPhone. A member deciding what to do next can consider four routes:

- Finish the current loan and keep the phone. This is the ownership path for someone who does not need a replacement immediately.
- Use Apple Upgrade. This is a current leasing alternative, not a continuation of the former Upgrade Program.
- Buy the next iPhone outright. The buyer pays the current listed price and retains the device.
- Use Apple Card Monthly Installments or carrier financing. These are separate payment arrangements with their own eligibility, promotion, and ownership terms.
How Apple Upgrade differs from the former program
Apple Upgrade is a lease provided by Klarna. At the end of the lease, the customer may upgrade, purchase the device, or return it and leave the arrangement. Early upgrade or early termination requires the remaining payments plus applicable taxes. A returned device must be in good working condition to avoid damage fees.
If the customer buys the leased device, Apple describes the purchase amount as the list price at lease signing minus payments and applicable trade-in credits. Those rules are materially different from a 24-month installment loan that becomes the customer’s phone after 24 payments, so do not use an Apple Upgrade monthly quote as a substitute for the former program in a cost comparison.
Which path fits which buyer?
Choose outright purchase when ownership flexibility matters most
- You want to keep the phone for as long as it remains useful.
- You want the freedom to sell or trade it on your own timetable.
- You do not want a required return condition or a new credit check before replacing it.
- You can pay the device price and account separately for tax and optional protection.
Consider a structured payment or lease when cash flow matters
Monthly payments can spread the cost, but compare the complete obligation rather than the advertised monthly number. Check the term, protection, taxes, carrier requirement, ownership outcome, early-exit cost, condition rules, and credit approval. A lower monthly payment can reflect a longer obligation or a lease in which you do not automatically own the phone.

For frequent upgraders, separate the old program from current options
The former program was designed around replacement after 12 payments, subject to its conditions. New U.S. customers cannot newly enroll in it. Current shoppers who want frequent upgrades must evaluate Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments, carrier financing, or an outright purchase under the terms available at the time they buy.
Questions to answer before checkout
- What exact model and storage tier am I comparing?
- Is the displayed price tied to a selected carrier or available as an unlocked purchase?
- Are taxes and fees included, and do they recur or apply only at purchase?
- Am I comparing equivalent AppleCare+ coverage?
- How many months will I keep each phone?
- Will I keep, sell, or trade the outright-purchased phone?
- If I am an existing program member, will I finish the 24 payments or replace the phone under another arrangement?
- What happens if the phone is damaged, lost, or not returned on time?
- What credit check, approval, lease, or carrier conditions apply to the option I am considering?
Check Apple’s current U.S. program, legal, and shopping information immediately before purchase. The former program’s 24-month term, 0% APR, 12-payment upgrade threshold, and July 28, 2026 closure are useful reference points, but live pricing and eligibility govern an actual transaction.
