The Motorola edge 70 max is the larger-screen, higher-refresh and higher-capacity-battery choice; the iPhone 17e is substantially lighter and more compact. Which makes more sense depends on whether you prefer a small iPhone or a large Android phone—not on a universal winner. The comparison below uses official specifications, not comparative hands-on testing.

Quick specification comparison

Size and portability: compact iPhone or large-screen Motorola?

The iPhone 17e weighs 169g and has a 6.1-inch display. Motorola lists the edge 70 max at 221g with a 6.82-inch display. That is a 52g difference, alongside a screen-size gap that makes the Motorola the more expansive option for reading, video and other large-screen tasks. The iPhone’s smaller footprint and lower listed weight are the more relevant advantages if carrying comfort or one-handed use matters to you.

Display: 144Hz and QHD+ on Motorola, smaller OLED on iPhone

Motorola lists a 1440 × 3168 AMOLED panel with refresh rates up to 144Hz. The iPhone 17e’s 6.1-inch OLED is 2532 × 1170 at 460ppi; Apple’s cited specification page does not list a high-refresh feature. A higher maximum refresh rate can make supported motion appear smoother, while the Motorola’s larger, higher-resolution panel provides more screen area. Brightness figures are also specified differently: Motorola states 7,000 nits peak, while Apple lists 800 nits typical and 1,200 nits HDR peak. Those figures should be read in the context of each manufacturer’s stated specification rather than treated as a like-for-like real-world brightness test.

Android 16 or Apple’s iPhone ecosystem

The Motorola runs Android 16 with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, while the iPhone 17e uses Apple’s A19 and iPhone platform. Apple’s product page also lists Apple Intelligence features. The better fit is usually the operating system and services you already prefer: consider app and accessory compatibility, how you share files, and whether you want to remain with Android or iOS. The supplied specifications do not establish a general performance winner between these processors.

Battery capacity and charging: compare the claims carefully

Motorola lists a 7,100mAh silicon-carbon battery, 90W wired charging and 25W Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. It claims up to 73 hours of battery life, but says battery-life claims are approximate and based on continuous device use under optimal network conditions; actual performance varies with signal, settings, temperature and battery condition.

Apple instead states up to 26 hours of video playback for the iPhone 17e. It lists MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W and says a 20W-or-higher adapter can charge the phone up to 50% in 30 minutes; that adapter is sold separately. Motorola’s general battery-life estimate and Apple’s video-playback figure describe different measures, so they do not establish which phone lasts longer in an equivalent test.

Cameras: two rear cameras versus one system with 2× capability

The Motorola has a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation and an 8MP ultrawide camera with autofocus and macro capability. That gives it a dedicated ultrawide option for broader scenes and close-up macro use. Apple’s 48MP Fusion system is a single rear-camera system with 2× telephoto capability enabled through the system. Megapixel counts alone do not determine photo quality, and the cited specifications do not provide comparative image-quality results.

Storage, protection and software support

Storage choices

Apple lists 256GB and 512GB configurations for the iPhone 17e. Motorola lists 256GB storage and 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM for the edge 70 max; Apple’s cited specification page does not state RAM. Choose storage based on how much video, photography, offline media and app data you expect to keep on the phone.

Water and dust protection

Apple rates the iPhone 17e IP68 for up to 6m of water depth for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529. Motorola states IP69/IP68 and MIL-STD 810H for the edge 70 max. These are manufacturer ratings, not a reason to deliberately expose either phone to water or harsh conditions.

Update commitments
