Display sizes are diagonal manufacturer specifications. The products use different platforms and shapes, so the processor names and camera resolutions do not establish which phone is faster or takes better photos; that would require matched independent testing.

What is the actual price difference?
A defensible exact difference cannot be calculated from the available prices: Samsung lists the Fold8 from $1,899.99 before trade-in on its US product page, while the reviewed Apple page is a specification page and does not list an iPhone 17 price. Check Apple’s regional store or an authorized retailer for the current iPhone price before comparing.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For context, Tom’s Guide reported starting prices around the Fold8’s August 7, 2026 availability of $1,899 for 256GB, $2,099 for 512GB and $2,499 for 1TB in the US, as well as £1,699 in the UK and AU$2,699 in Australia. These are reported regional launch prices, not a live checkout quote; offers, stock and prices can change. Samsung’s current US page also displays promotional and trade-in messaging, which should not be confused with the pre-trade-in starting price.
To compare value fairly, use the same country, equivalent storage, and prices from the same point in time. Keep trade-in credits, carrier financing and discounts separate from the standard retail price. The Fold8’s 1TB option has 16GB of memory, while its 256GB and 512GB versions have 12GB, so configuration matters as well as storage.

How the screens and size change everyday use
iPhone 17: a lighter phone that stays one piece
The iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch OLED screen sits in a conventional handset, and its published weight is 177g. Choose this form if you want a regular smartphone rather than a device you open to access a larger workspace. Apple lists the model as introduced in 2025.

Galaxy Z Fold8: a compact cover screen and a larger open display
Closed, the Fold8 has a 5.5-inch cover display; unfolded, its 7.6-inch inner screen offers more room for reading, video and side-by-side work. Samsung describes that larger screen as suitable for side-by-side productivity; that is a use-case description, not a measured guarantee that a particular task will be faster. At 201g, the Fold8 is 24g heavier than the iPhone 17 in the manufacturers’ published specifications.
Camera and battery claims: what the specifications do—and do not—show
Camera hardware
Apple lists two 48MP rear cameras and optical-quality 2x telephoto capability. Samsung lists 50MP wide and ultra-wide cameras and up to 10x digital zoom. Megapixel counts and zoom labels are not image-quality scores; without comparable independent camera testing, these figures alone cannot rank the phones’ photos.
Rank #4
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Battery information
Samsung lists a typical 4,800mAh battery capacity and claims up to 26 hours of video playback for the Fold8. The reviewed Apple specifications page does not provide a directly comparable battery figure. The published information therefore does not establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use.
Durability and accessory compatibility
Apple specifies IP68 resistance for the iPhone 17, with a maximum depth of 6m for up to 30 minutes under Apple’s stated conditions. Samsung’s cited Fold8 page describes materials but does not provide an equivalent rating in the source information used here. That gap is not evidence that the Fold8 has no protection; it means the two claims cannot be compared on this basis.

Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold8 does not support S Pen. If you are considering a case or wireless-charging accessory, verify that it is explicitly compatible with the Fold8; a case for another Fold model should not be assumed to fit.
Which should you buy?
Choose iPhone 17 if
- You want the lighter device and prefer a conventional smartphone that does not unfold.
- You already prefer iOS or want to stay within Apple’s ecosystem.
- You do not expect to use a larger inner display often enough to make a foldable worthwhile.
Choose Galaxy Z Fold8 if
- You expect to use the 7.6-inch inner display regularly for reading, video or side-by-side tasks.
- You accept the added weight and the Fold8’s verified US starting price before trade-in.
- You are comfortable choosing a foldable form factor rather than a standard handset.
If price is the deciding factor, compare current local prices for the storage versions you would actually buy. The available figures do not establish a reliable price gap between equivalent iPhone 17 and Fold8 configurations.
