The iPhone 16 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra are not direct substitutes. The iPhone 16 is a 6.1-inch conventional smartphone that Apple announced in 2024 at a U.S. starting price of $799 with 128GB of storage. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is a foldable with a 6.5-inch cover display that opens to an 8-inch main display, and Samsung lists it in the U.S. from $2,099.99 with 256GB of storage as its base option. The launch price gap is $1,300.99, but that figure compares different base storage tiers and launch list prices, not what either phone costs to buy today.
Start with the form factor
Before comparing specifications, decide which kind of phone you need. The iPhone 16 is a single-screen slab with a 6.1-inch OLED display, built to be held and used one-handed all day. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra folds. Its 6.5-inch cover screen handles everyday tasks when the phone is closed, and opening it gives you an 8-inch inner display with tablet-style room for side-by-side apps.

That difference drives most of the buying decision. If you mainly want a pocket-sized phone for messaging, navigation, photos and calls, the iPhone 16 covers that job without the premium of a foldable. If you regularly read long documents, edit on a larger canvas or run two apps at once, the Fold 8 Ultra’s open screen is the reason to pay more. Samsung lists the Fold 8 Ultra at 215g. Apple’s launch material for the iPhone 16 does not state a weight in the sources used for this article, so a direct pocket-feel comparison is not possible from specifications alone.
Price difference explained
The two launch prices are set for different storage tiers, so the headline gap is not an equal-spec comparison.

| Item | Apple iPhone 16 | Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Source and year of U.S. price | Apple announcement, 2024 | Samsung listing, 2026 |
| U.S. starting price | $799 | $2,099.99 |
| Storage options | 128GB, 256GB, 512GB | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB |
| Price of the 256GB iPhone 16 | Not stated in the cited Apple material | Not stated as a separate figure in the cited Samsung material; the 256GB tier is the base option |
At base tiers, the difference is $1,300.99 ($2,099.99 minus $799). Because the Fold 8 Ultra starts at 256GB and the iPhone 16 starts at 128GB, the gap overstates the price of a like-for-like purchase. A fair equal-storage comparison requires the current price of the iPhone 16 at 256GB, which neither launch source gives.
Current prices are a separate question. Launch figures do not reflect later discounts, trade-in credits or carrier promotions, and Samsung notes that availability and offers vary by market. Samsung lists Amazon.com among the retail channels for the Fold 8 Ultra, but whether a given listing or offer is available depends on the seller and your region.

The table lists what each manufacturer publishes. It does not show how the devices perform against each other, and the battery row should not be read as an endurance ranking. Samsung’s 27-hour figure and Apple’s battery claims were measured under different and unstated conditions, so they cannot be placed side by side as proof that one lasts longer.
What the camera numbers do and do not tell you
The Fold 8 Ultra’s 200MP main sensor and 10MP telephoto lens look far larger on paper than the iPhone 16’s 48MP main camera. Megapixel count alone does not determine image quality. Sensor size, pixel size, lens design, zoom method and the processing that combines pixels all affect the final photo. Apple’s 2x telephoto is an option on the iPhone 16, while Samsung’s 3x figure is described as optical zoom. Those are different claims, and neither source supplies sample images or a test comparison that would show which system produces better results in practice.

Performance and software
Both phones use current flagship-class processors, Apple’s A18 in the iPhone 16 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in the Fold 8 Ultra. Manufacturer specifications do not show how the chips compare in games, multitasking or sustained workloads, and no independent benchmark results for these two models are covered here.
The software choice is part of the decision. The iPhone 16 runs iOS and Apple Intelligence. Apple’s Kaiann Drance, vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, said at launch: “iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus mark the beginning of a new era for iPhone with Apple Intelligence delivering powerful, personal, and private experiences to our users.” That is a company statement about its own product, not independent evidence of AI quality. The Fold 8 Ultra runs Android with Galaxy AI, and Samsung markets its foldable multitasking and app support as core features. Feature availability differs by region and app, so check that the specific AI and multitasking functions you need are available where you live.

Which phone fits your use
- Choose the iPhone 16 if you want a single-screen phone with a lower U.S. launch price, your needs fit 128GB, and you prefer iOS.
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if the large open screen is the main reason you are buying, you accept a higher price and a foldable’s design, and you want the 256GB base storage or larger.
- Test in person before deciding if pocket fit matters, because the sources here do not give a comparable weight for the iPhone 16.
How to check the current price before you buy
- Compare the same storage tier. Find the current price of the iPhone 16 at 256GB if you want to match the Fold 8 Ultra’s base storage.
- Check the retailer’s live price, including any trade-in or carrier promotion, and read whether the offer requires a plan or trade-in.
- Confirm that the model is sold in your country and carries the features you need, since regional availability and software features vary.
Launch prices are a starting point. For the iPhone 16, the 2024 price is a dated figure; for the Fold 8 Ultra, the 2026 price is the more recent reference, but both can change after launch.
