Apple Invites explained: iCloud+, account requirements, and how guest access works

Apple Invites splits the requirements between the host and the guests. The person creating an event needs an iCloud+ subscription, while invitees can attend without iCloud+ and without an Apple Account. Guests can respond on the web using an email address and a verification code, and a host can configure a public invitation link either to admit people automatically or to hold each request for approval.

The important limitation is collaboration: a guest without an Apple Account can RSVP, but cannot add items to the event’s shared photo album or music playlist. Apple also cautions that some Apple Invites features vary by country or region.

Apple Invites requirements at a glance

Task What is required What the person can do
Create an event An iCloud+ subscription; the creator must also meet Apple’s age rule. Build and manage the invitation, track responses, control public-link access, and manage shared event features.
Attend an event No iCloud+ subscription and no Apple Account are required. Open the web invitation and respond to the RSVP.
RSVP without an Apple Account An email address and the verification code Apple sends to that address on iCloud.com. Choose an RSVP status and participate as an attendee.
Use shared photo or music features An Apple Account is required for guests who want to add content. Account-free guests can attend and RSVP, but cannot add to the shared album or playlist.

This division means the subscription is primarily a hosting requirement, not an admission fee for every person on the guest list.

Who needs iCloud+?

Hosts need a subscription to create an event

Apple’s requirement is specific: “To create an event, you must have an iCloud+ subscription.” The subscription belongs to the person setting up the event. Apple does not state a separate per-guest subscription requirement, and attendance itself is described as free.

Apple Invites is available through the iPhone app and on iCloud.com. The host uses one of those entry points to create the event, customize its invitation, send or share invitations, and monitor responses. The available controls can differ by location because Apple says not all Apple Invites features are offered in every country or region.

Age restrictions can also block event creation

Children under 13 cannot create an event. Apple notes that the applicable age can vary by country or region, so the under-13 rule should not be treated as a universal description of every local age threshold. If an otherwise eligible user cannot start an event, account age and regional rules are worth checking alongside the iCloud+ requirement.

Do guests need an Apple Account?

Attendance does not require an account

Apple states that guests do not need iCloud+ or even an Apple Account; anyone can join an event. Apple’s introduction guide describes attendance as free and available on the web with or without an Apple Account. A person who only needs to see the invitation and tell the host whether they are coming does not have to create an Apple account first.

Guests who already have an Apple Account

On iCloud.com, a guest with an Apple Account signs in with the email address or phone number associated with that account and the account password. This is the account-based route for responding to an invitation and accessing the event as a signed-in participant.

Guests without an Apple Account

A guest without an Apple Account enters an email address on iCloud.com. Apple sends a verification code to that address, which the guest enters to continue. This email-code flow is the practical way to RSVP without creating an account or subscribing to iCloud+.

Apple documents web attendance rather than requiring the iPhone app. That makes browser access the relevant path for invitees using devices outside Apple’s app ecosystem. Apple does not provide a device-by-device compatibility list in the cited guidance, so Android users should understand the option as web-based access through the invitation rather than a promise of a dedicated Android app.

How invitation links and guest approval work

Individual invitations and public links are different

A host can send uniquely generated invitation links to contacts or share one public link. Apple says that anyone with the link can view and join the event. A public link is therefore easy to distribute, but possession of the link is the starting point for access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Individually invited contacts can automatically join, according to Apple’s guest-management guidance. Public-link visitors follow the host’s selected rule: they can be admitted immediately, or their request can wait for review.

Automatic joining

With automatic joining enabled, a person who uses the public invitation link can proceed into the event without the host approving that individual request. This is the lower-friction choice for open gatherings where the link is intentionally shareable.

Approve Guests

The host can turn on Approve Guests so that people using the public link submit a request instead of joining immediately. For each request, Apple lists three management actions: approve the person, deny the request, or unblock a person who was previously blocked. This gives the host a way to keep a public link convenient while retaining a manual gate.

Removing a guest later

Guest control does not end when someone is admitted. Apple lists the ability to remove guests, so the host can manage membership after invitations have been accepted. The documented RSVP states are Going, Not Going, Maybe, and Not Responded.

What account-free guests can and cannot do

They can RSVP

An account-free guest can use iCloud.com, verify an email address with Apple’s code, and submit an RSVP. The available responses let the host distinguish people who are attending, declining, undecided, or have not replied.

They cannot add to collaborative event content

Apple identifies one clear functional boundary: a guest without an Apple Account cannot add items to the shared photo album or music playlist. This does not prevent basic attendance, but it does prevent that guest from contributing photos or songs through those shared features.

Plan the guest list around the activity, not just attendance

For a ceremony, meeting, dinner, or other event where guests only need to respond, account-free participation may be sufficient. For a trip, party, or gathering built around shared photos and music, guests who are expected to contribute need Apple Accounts. The host should communicate that distinction before sending the invitation so that a person is not surprised when the RSVP works but the contribution controls are unavailable.

Host workflow: setting up access deliberately

  1. Confirm the host account. Make sure the person creating the event has an active iCloud+ subscription. If the creator is under Apple’s applicable minimum age, event creation is not available.
  2. Create the event in the Apple Invites app or on iCloud.com. Apple describes both as places where invitations can be created and managed. The exact feature set can vary by country or region.
  3. Choose how people will receive the invitation. Use individually generated links for named contacts or a public link when broader distribution is useful.
  4. Set the public-link rule. Select automatic joining for an open flow, or enable Approve Guests when every public-link request should be reviewed.
  5. Tell guests which participation path applies. Explain that an Apple Account is optional for RSVP, but required for adding to the shared photo album or music playlist.
  6. Monitor responses. Use the Going, Not Going, Maybe, and Not Responded states to track the list.
  7. Review access requests. For public-link requests under approval mode, approve, deny, or unblock people as appropriate.
  8. Remove guests when necessary. Apple provides a removal control for managing the event after people have joined.

Guest workflow: RSVP with or without an Apple Account

Using an Apple Account

  1. Open the invitation on the web at iCloud.com.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account email address or phone number and password.
  3. Review the event and submit one of the available RSVP responses.
  4. If the host has enabled shared features, use the signed-in account when you need to add permitted content.

Without an Apple Account

  1. Open the invitation on iCloud.com.
  2. Enter an email address when prompted.
  3. Retrieve the verification code Apple sends to that email address.
  4. Enter the code to verify the address.
  5. Choose an RSVP status and submit it.

The second route avoids both an Apple Account and an iCloud+ subscription, but it stops short of contribution rights for the shared album and playlist.

Choosing the right link and privacy setting

Situation Better setting Reason
A private gathering with a known contact list Individually generated invitation links Apple says individually invited contacts can automatically join, reducing approval work.
An open event where the link may be reposted Public link with automatic joining Anyone with the link can view and join, so access is fast but less selective.
An event that accepts broad sharing but needs screening Public link with Approve Guests Requests can be approved, denied, or unblocked individually.
An event centered on shared photos or music Tell contributors they need Apple Accounts Account-free guests can RSVP but cannot add to those shared features.

The key decision is whether convenience or review matters more. Automatic joining minimizes friction; approval mode adds a deliberate checkpoint for anyone arriving through the public link.

Common problems and the relevant fix

“I cannot create an event.”

Check the host-side requirements first: event creation requires iCloud+, and Apple’s age restriction may apply. If both conditions appear satisfied, regional availability may explain why a particular control is missing, because Apple does not offer every feature in every country or region.

“The guest thinks an Apple Account is mandatory.”

Direct the guest to the web invitation on iCloud.com and the email-verification route. Apple’s documented flow allows an email address and verification code instead of Apple Account credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The guest can RSVP but cannot upload a photo or add a song.”

That behavior matches Apple’s stated limitation for guests without an Apple Account. The guest can attend and respond, but adding to the shared photo album or music playlist requires an Apple Account.

“A person with the public link is waiting.”

The host may have enabled Approve Guests. Public-link requests remain subject to the host’s decision, who can approve, deny, or unblock the person. Individually invited contacts have different treatment and can automatically join.

“A feature described by another guest is missing.”

Apple warns that feature availability varies by country or region. Check the local availability of the specific Apple Invites feature instead of assuming that every event or account receives the same controls.

What Apple Invites is—and what it is not

Apple describes Apple Invites as a service for creating, sending, and managing event invitations. Its documented capabilities include customizable backgrounds, RSVP tracking, shared albums, and playlists, with access through the iPhone app and iCloud.com.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not necessary for every attendee to buy a subscription or open an Apple Account merely to attend. The subscription requirement sits with event creation, while account requirements become relevant when a guest wants signed-in participation or the ability to contribute to shared content.

Bottom line for hosts and guests

If you are hosting, budget for an iCloud+ subscription and decide whether a public link should admit people automatically or use Approve Guests. If you are attending, you can RSVP on the web for free, with an Apple Account or with only an email address and verification code. Bring an Apple Account into the picture only when you need to add to the shared photo album or music playlist. Finally, verify which features are offered in your country or region before promising guests a specific experience.
