Start by deciding whether you want to remove all integrated AI, hide specific generated features, prevent access on a managed device, or simply see what reaches Apple’s cloud service. Then change only the controls that match that goal.
On current compatible software, the most useful controls are the Apple Intelligence master switch, individual summary and suggestion settings, Siri’s AI mode, Screen Time restrictions, the Apple Intelligence Report, and optional ChatGPT access. Each has a different privacy effect and a different impact on everyday iPhone functions.

Choose the right level of control
Apple Intelligence is a collection of writing, notification, photo, Siri and other features rather than one standalone app. Consequently, a single switch is not always the best answer. Use the table to match the setting to your objective before changing anything.

Check compatibility and software version first
Apple’s current guide says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 model or later. Availability also varies by language and region, so a missing menu can be a compatibility or localization issue rather than a malfunction.

Labels and locations can change between iOS, iPadOS and macOS releases. The steps below use the current iPhone labels. On an iPad or Mac, look for the same feature name inside Settings or System Settings, then use the search field if the hierarchy differs.
Apple first announced the feature rollout for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1, with support for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and M1-or-later iPad and Mac models. That announcement describes the original launch, not the complete current compatibility list.
Turn off Apple Intelligence completely
Use the master Apple Intelligence control when your priority is to remove the integrated feature set rather than tune individual behaviors. Open Settings, go to the Apple Intelligence and Siri section, and turn off Apple Intelligence. Confirm the prompt if iOS displays one.

Turning it back on restores the features that are available for your device, language and region, but any feature-specific choices you changed separately may still need to be reviewed.
What a full shutdown does not remove
- Ordinary notifications, messages and email continue to work.
- Basic Siri voice-control functions remain available unless you also change Siri’s mode.
- Disabling Apple Intelligence does not delete personal data from unrelated apps.
- The optional ChatGPT extension is a separate control; review it if you previously enabled it.
Disable summaries and notification ranking without losing core apps
Summaries and priority ranking are the most visible AI behaviors for many people. You can remove them while leaving other Apple Intelligence tools enabled.
- Open Settings and tap Apps.
- Tap Messages, then turn off Summarize Messages.
- Return to Apps, tap Mail, and turn off Summarize Message Previews.
- Return to the main Settings list, tap Notifications, and turn off Summarize Notifications.
- In the same Notifications screen, turn off Prioritize Notifications if you do not want Apple to rank alerts by likely importance.
These switches stop generated summaries and prioritization in the selected places. Your original message text, mail previews and ordinary notification delivery remain available; only the generated or reordered presentation is removed.

Review mail, voicemail, calling and Journal suggestions
Apple Intelligence can appear as suggestions rather than as a visible summary. Check each of these controls if you want a quieter, less generative setup.

Mail Smart Replies
Go to Settings > Apps > Mail and turn off Personalize Smart Replies. Mail continues to send and receive messages, but it will not personalize the generated reply suggestions controlled by this switch.
Voicemail suggestions
Open Settings > Apps > Phone and turn off Suggestions in Voicemail. This removes the Apple Intelligence suggestion layer from voicemail handling without disabling voicemail itself.
Calling suggestions
In Settings > Apps > Phone > Apple Intelligence & Siri, turn off Show When Calling if you do not want Apple Intelligence prompts or suggestions displayed during calls.
Journal writing prompts
Open Settings > Journal and turn off Get Writing Prompts. Journal entries and the Journal app remain usable; the setting only removes the prompt feature.

Keep classic Siri while removing newer Siri AI behavior
If you still want voice commands, alarms, calls and other basic assistant actions, you do not need to disable Siri entirely. Apple documents two separate choices: turn Siri AI off and select Siri Classic.

- Open Settings and enter Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn off the Siri AI option, then choose Siri Classic when that choice is shown.
- Test a simple command, such as setting a timer or calling a contact, to confirm that classic voice control still meets your needs.
This changes the assistant mode; it does not erase Siri or disable every voice-control function. Newer AI behaviors and capabilities will no longer be available in the classic mode.
Use Screen Time to enforce a no-AI policy
Individual switches are easy for an owner to reverse. Screen Time is more appropriate when you are configuring a child’s iPhone, a shared device or a managed usage policy.
- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Choose the device or person whose access you manage.
- Open the restrictions for Apple Intelligence features and disable or limit the features you do not permit.
- Set or retain a Screen Time passcode if the user should not be able to undo the policy.
The exact restriction labels can vary by operating-system release. Screen Time is a prevention control: it limits feature use rather than merely recording what happened. A restricted feature stays unavailable until the Screen Time policy is changed.

When you want visibility instead of a blanket shutdown, use Apple Intelligence Report. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report. Apple offers a last-15-minutes view by default, a last-seven-days option, or Off.
Export the activity file
Choose Export Activity to create Apple_Intelligence_Report.json. The report records requests sent to Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s cloud-processing system for harder tasks. Keep the file private because it is an activity record associated with your device’s use of Apple Intelligence.
Understand what the report can and cannot do
The report is an audit log, not a firewall. Turning report collection off stops the report from being gathered; it does not necessarily stop Apple Intelligence processing. To reduce or eliminate requests, disable the relevant feature or apply a Screen Time restriction.

Decide separately about ChatGPT access
ChatGPT is an optional extension used by supported Siri and Writing Tools requests. Disabling it prevents that handoff, but it does not turn off Apple’s on-device models or Private Cloud Compute.
For users who invoke ChatGPT through Siri or Writing Tools without connecting an account, Apple says IP addresses are obscured and OpenAI will not store the requests. If you connect an account, use is governed by the applicable ChatGPT data policies. Review the ChatGPT permission in the Apple Intelligence and Siri settings and leave it disabled if you do not want this optional service involved.
Because ChatGPT access is independent, you can keep Apple’s own features while refusing the extension, or disable Apple Intelligence broadly and still review the ChatGPT choice for clarity.
How Apple describes on-device and cloud processing
Apple says that in many cases its Apple Intelligence models run entirely on the device, so a task can finish without data leaving the device. More demanding requests may use Private Cloud Compute.
According to Apple’s description, Private Cloud Compute receives only the data relevant to the request, processes it, returns the result securely and does not retain the processed data. Apple also says independent researchers can inspect the server software. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy claims, not an independent audit result.

The Apple Intelligence Report is the practical way to see which requests your device records as having gone to that service.
Match each setting to the result you actually want
- Want no Apple Intelligence features: turn off Apple Intelligence in Apple Intelligence & Siri, then check Screen Time if the setting must be enforced.
- Want normal notifications without generated text: disable Summarize Notifications and Prioritize Notifications.
- Want original messages and mail but no summaries: disable Summarize Messages and Summarize Message Previews.
- Want Siri commands without newer AI behavior: choose Siri Classic.
- Want to know what reached Apple’s cloud service: enable Apple Intelligence Report and export the JSON activity file when needed.
- Want to prevent an optional third-party handoff: disable ChatGPT access separately.
Troubleshoot missing or ineffective controls
A setting is not visible
Check the device model, iOS version, language and region. Apple Intelligence availability varies across those factors, and menu names can move after an operating-system update. Use Settings search for terms such as “Apple Intelligence,” “Summarize,” “Prioritize,” or “Screen Time.”
Summaries still appear after one switch is off
Each surface has its own control. Check Messages, Mail and Notifications independently; disabling one summary setting does not disable the others.
The report is empty
Confirm that Apple Intelligence Report is enabled and that you are viewing the selected time range. A report records requests; it does not create entries for features that have not run during that period.
Cloud requests continue after turning the report off
That is expected. Report collection and processing are separate. Disable the feature generating the request or restrict Apple Intelligence with Screen Time if preventing processing is your objective.
Recheck after major updates
Apple can add features and rename controls in later iOS, iPadOS and macOS releases. After a major update, revisit Apple Intelligence & Siri, Notifications, the relevant app settings, Screen Time and the Apple Intelligence Report. This quick review confirms that a previously selected privacy preference still matches the current interface and feature set.
