Apple Intelligence gives the iPhone 16 Pro a new reason to consider it, but it does not make this older Pro phone the obvious iPhone to buy in 2026. The features that are useful now—especially Writing Tools and photo cleanup—also work on less expensive compatible iPhones. The 16 Pro makes sense if you want its cameras, display, or video tools and can find a well-supported device at a meaningful discount. Buying it mainly for Apple Intelligence, particularly for Siri features Apple says are coming later in 2026, is a much weaker bet.
What Apple Intelligence can do on the iPhone 16 Pro
Apple Intelligence is a collection of system features, not a single assistant that transforms every task. Apple lists Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, Clean Up, notification features, Visual Intelligence, translation, and Siri-related functions among its offerings. What appears and works depends on the installed software, language, region, and individual feature. Writing and communication
Writing Tools can proofread, rewrite, summarize, or adjust the tone of text in supported contexts. These are the most straightforwardly practical features: they can help polish a message or condense text without opening a separate AI app. Genmoji and suggested replies add convenience or playfulness, but they are not reasons on their own to pay a Pro-phone premium. Translation and other language features are more conditional: check Apple’s current language and regional support rather than assuming your preferred combination is covered.
Photos and generated images
Clean Up is the feature with the clearest everyday use: it can remove distracting elements from a photo. Image Playground and Genmoji are more about creating images for messages and other casual uses. That may be fun, but it is a different proposition from a dependable camera upgrade. Consider whether you would use generated images regularly; they are unlikely to justify the cost of a 16 Pro by themselves.

Notifications and summaries
Summaries can make a busy notification screen easier to scan, but compression can also erase context. In its iPhone 16 Pro review, Android Authority found summaries useful in some situations and less reliable for active group conversations, where a condensed account could obscure what people meant. Treat a summary as a prompt to open the conversation, not as a guaranteed substitute for reading it.
Siri: available changes versus future promises
Siri has a redesigned interface and Type to Siri, alongside improvements to natural-language handling. But the distinction between those changes and the more ambitious assistant Apple has described matters. Apple says its “Siri AI” capabilities are coming in English later in 2026. Do not buy the 16 Pro on the assumption that personal-context understanding or complex actions across apps are already available in the form you expect. Why the iPhone 16 Pro still has a case
The stronger argument for this phone is its hardware. The 16 Pro combines an A18 Pro chip with a 6.3-inch display, ProMotion high refresh rate, titanium construction, and a Pro camera system that includes a 48-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, and 5x telephoto. It also supports ProRes and 4K/120 video. Android Authority’s review highlights the 5x telephoto, ultrawide upgrade, and video capabilities as notable parts of the package.

Those features matter if you actually take advantage of long-range framing, advanced video capture, or a smaller Pro-size phone. Camera Control may suit particular shooting workflows, but it is not essential for everyone. If your priority is everyday messaging, browsing, and Apple Intelligence, much of what makes the 16 Pro a Pro is likely to go unused.

The 16 Pro is compatible, but it is not uniquely capable of running Apple Intelligence. Apple’s current compatibility information includes iPhone 16 models, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro models, and newer compatible iPhones. That makes the 16 Pro overkill if AI access is your only requirement. The current iPhone lineup includes newer options such as the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, and iPhone 17 Pro; a standard iPhone 16 may also be worth considering if it is substantially cheaper and you do not need Pro cameras, ProMotion, or advanced video features.
For someone already using an iPhone 15 Pro, the case is weaker still: Apple lists that model as compatible too. An upgrade solely to get Apple Intelligence would not make sense on compatibility grounds.

Apple Intelligence versus Android AI
There is no useful single winner called “AI.” Compare the tasks you care about, and distinguish a feature that is available from one that is accurate and useful in your language, region, and apps.

Apple’s approach emphasizes integration with its operating systems and apps. Apple says some processing happens on-device and more demanding requests can use Private Cloud Compute; the company says that data sent to Private Cloud Compute is not stored and is used only to fulfill the request. Those are Apple’s stated privacy design claims, not an independent guarantee.
Android alternatives, especially Google’s Pixel line and Samsung’s Galaxy flagships, may be a better fit if you value more mature conversational tools, image editing, customization, or faster experimentation. Android Authority’s review judged Google’s AI features more mature in several areas and found Apple’s image-generation results inconsistent in its testing. That is a reviewer’s assessment of particular software and tasks, not a universal ranking; features change over time and your preferred workflows may differ.

The 2026 buying decision is about the actual offer
Apple’s current retail lineup no longer prominently lists the iPhone 16 Pro. As a result, a buyer may be comparing used, refurbished, open-box, carrier, or remaining sealed stock rather than a straightforward current Apple retail purchase. There is no single current price to recommend without knowing the configuration and seller. The $999 figure often associated with launch-era coverage is not a 2026 street price.
Compare the specific 16 Pro’s total price with the iPhone 17, 17e, or 17 Pro available to you. A discount only matters if it is large enough to offset choosing an older model and the risks of its condition. Before buying a third-party listing, verify:
- Storage capacity and whether the phone is new, open-box, used, or refurbished.
- Battery health, warranty or refurbisher guarantee, and return window.
- Carrier-lock status, IMEI or serial-number status, and SIM or eSIM compatibility in your region.
- Parts and service history, and the operation of Face ID, cameras, and other key hardware.
- Activation Lock and any financing or ownership issues.
- The price difference versus newer compatible iPhones at the same retailer.
Apple’s Trade In program and current carrier offers may reduce the cost of a newer phone, but eligibility and terms vary. Do not assume a promotion applies to a used 16 Pro or that its headline credit is available without a qualifying trade-in or plan.

What you need to enable Apple Intelligence
Apple’s support guidance lists compatible hardware, iOS 18.1 or later (with newer features potentially requiring later versions), roughly 7GB of device storage, and matching device and Siri languages set to a supported language. Availability also varies by region and feature. Apple recommends Wi-Fi and power while initial models download. Settings labels can change with software updates, so use the current support page if the path differs.
- Install the latest iOS version available for the iPhone.
- Open Settings, then tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence and connect the phone to Wi-Fi and power while downloads finish.
- Check that device language and Siri language match a supported language, and leave enough free storage for the models.
If the option or a feature does not appear, first update iOS, confirm the iPhone model is supported, check storage and matching languages, and allow downloads to complete on Wi-Fi and power. Restarting after the download may help. If Apple Intelligence was turned off, re-enable it and allow the models to download again; also check whether the specific feature is available in your region and language.
Who should buy the iPhone 16 Pro?
It is a reasonable choice if
- You find a meaningful discount against comparable newer models and the device has clear condition, warranty, and return terms.
- You specifically want its 5x telephoto, Pro camera controls, ProRes or high-frame-rate video, or 6.3-inch Pro display.
- You are moving to iOS for Apple ecosystem features such as iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop, Apple Watch compatibility, or Mac integration.
- You are comfortable buying a previous-generation phone and do not expect every promised Siri capability to be available immediately.
Choose something else if
- Apple Intelligence is your only reason to upgrade: less expensive compatible iPhones can provide access.
- The 16 Pro costs close to a current-generation iPhone 17-series model.
- You want the newest Siri features now, or prioritize fast charging, long battery life, or the broadest AI experimentation.
- You already have an iPhone 15 Pro and are considering a replacement solely for Apple Intelligence.
- The seller cannot establish battery condition, activation status, repair history, warranty, or return rights.
Android Authority’s testing also noted slow wired charging, battery endurance it considered merely satisfactory against some Android rivals, warmth during extended camera or navigation use, and camera processing that could trail Google in some situations. These are review findings rather than guarantees about every user’s experience; battery life in particular depends on use, signal, settings, temperature, software, and battery health.
