Apple released iPadOS 18.1 developer beta 1 on July 29, 2024, bringing the first Apple Intelligence features to iPad. The preview was limited to iPads with an M1 chip or later, and it offered only an early subset of Apple’s announced features—not the complete Apple Intelligence experience or the finished iPadOS 18.1 release.
What Apple released on July 29, 2024
iPadOS 18.1 developer beta 1 arrived alongside iOS 18.1 developer beta 1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 developer beta 1. It was the first iPadOS build in which developers could try Apple Intelligence features on compatible iPads. This was prerelease software distributed through Apple’s developer channel, not the public launch of iPadOS 18.1. MacRumors reported the beta release and its initial features.
Which iPads could use Apple Intelligence?
For the original 2024 preview, Apple Intelligence required an iPad with an M1 chip or later. That included qualifying M-series iPad Pro and iPad Air models available at the time. Apple’s iPadOS 18 announcement specified M1-or-newer iPads for Apple Intelligence.
| Compatibility question | Answer for the 2024 beta |
|---|---|
| Could an iPad run iPadOS 18? | Many iPads could; that did not by itself qualify them for Apple Intelligence. |
| Could it run Apple Intelligence? | It needed an M1 chip or later. |
| Would an older A-series iPad gain Apple Intelligence by installing the beta? | No. Installing compatible iPadOS software did not remove the hardware requirement. |
The distinction mattered to owners and buyers: ordinary iPadOS 18 compatibility extended beyond the devices eligible for Apple Intelligence. Apple described the system as using on-device processing for many tasks, with Private Cloud Compute for more complex requests; the M-series cutoff made processor generation a meaningful software divide as well as a performance distinction. Apple’s WWDC 2024 platform session explained its Apple silicon and Private Cloud Compute approach.

What features appeared in beta 1?
The first beta exposed an initial selection of Apple Intelligence features. Availability and behavior could vary in prerelease software, so an eligible device was not a guarantee that every capability would appear immediately.
Writing Tools
Writing Tools could help rewrite selected text in a different tone, proofread it, or create a shorter summary. Summaries could be presented as a paragraph, key points, a list, or a table. Apple described Writing Tools as systemwide, including use in Apple apps such as Mail, Messages, Notes, and Pages and in compatible third-party apps. Apple’s October 2024 launch announcement describes the feature set in the finished release.

Summaries for notifications, Mail, and messages
Beta 1 began adding summaries for selected notifications and messages, along with Mail summarization and prioritization. The aim was to show the main point of incoming content without requiring users to open every item. These were early implementations, not a promise that every notification or message would be summarized.
A redesigned Siri interface
Siri gained a new visual treatment, including a glowing effect around the display, along with greater tolerance for users correcting themselves mid-request and expanded product-support knowledge. The beta did not include the full conversational, context-aware Siri experience Apple had previewed at WWDC24.

Early Photos and Notes intelligence
Apple Intelligence was beginning to extend into Photos and Notes, including summarization-related functions. Features that appeared in the later finished release—such as natural-language photo search and Memory Movie creation—should not be read back into the contents of beta 1.
What was missing from the first beta?
Apple rolled out Apple Intelligence in stages. Beta 1 did not include the full WWDC24 roadmap: Image Playground, Genmoji, broader image-generation tools, the more capable app-aware Siri, and broad third-party app actions were absent or still to come. ChatGPT integration was also announced for a later phase. Apple said additional features would arrive over the following months in its September 2024 rollout announcement.

Language, region, and activation limits
At the time of the preview, Apple Intelligence launched in U.S. English; users needed to set both Siri and the device language to U.S. English. Availability also depended on region and language configuration, and Apple later expanded support. Apple’s iPadOS 18 feature guide documents the initial language requirement.
Apple’s September 2024 announcements also described an EU availability restriction for Apple Intelligence on iPhone and iPad at that stage. That was a dated launch limitation, not a statement of current policy. Availability changed over time; see Apple’s iPadOS 18 availability announcement for the contemporaneous regional context.

How developers could install the 2024 beta
These steps describe the developer-beta route used in 2024; Apple’s enrollment policies and Settings labels can change. The beta was not a good choice for an iPad needed for school, work, or other daily tasks.
- Sign in with an Apple Account enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. Apple’s developer resources were available at developer.apple.com.
- On a compatible iPad, open Settings, then tap General and Software Update.
- Open Beta Updates and select the developer beta channel.
- Return to Software Update and install iPadOS 18.1 developer beta 1 if it is offered.
- After installation, follow any Apple Intelligence setup prompts if the iPad and its language settings qualify. The device may need time and storage to download required models.
Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 18.1 release notes provided build and developer documentation. Installing the beta did not guarantee immediate access to every feature: activation could be staged, models might still be downloading, and features could change between builds.
Should a developer install a beta on a primary iPad?
The preview offered developers an early opportunity to test Apple Intelligence behavior and related app integrations before the finished release. It also carried the normal trade-offs of prerelease software: bugs, crashes, battery drain, interface regressions, and app incompatibilities. Because beta 1 was incomplete, a secondary test device was a safer choice than an iPad relied on for production, school, or work.
Why the M1 cutoff mattered to iPad buyers
The launch made clear that an iPad could support iPadOS 18 without qualifying for Apple Intelligence. M1-or-newer hardware gained access to a new class of system features, while older supported models retained the ordinary iPadOS 18 capabilities they could run. For anyone considering an upgrade, the relevant question was not simply whether a model could install iPadOS 18, but whether it met the Apple Intelligence hardware requirement. Later iPad models and software versions may have different compatibility rules.
