Apple HomeView vs. Echo Show 8 and Nest Hub (2026): How the New Display Stacks Up

Apple HomeView is the best fit for an Apple-centered household that wants personal profiles, Apple Home controls and FaceTime in one shared screen. The $299 display is less compelling if your routines already depend on Alexa or Google services. Amazon’s Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) remains the broader, more mature Alexa option, while Google’s Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the camera-free choice for Google users and buyers seeking a lower-cost device.

HomeView pre-orders opened October 13, 2026, with launch scheduled for November 13 in Apple’s listed markets. It is not currently sold in the European Union because Siri AI is unavailable there.

What Apple HomeView does

HomeView is a 7-inch smart display with a Liquid Retina panel, a tilting tabletop design and a separate wall-mounted model. Apple lists four tabletop colors; the wall version comes in silver or space gray. The screen adjusts from 500 nits down to 0.3 nits, supports True Tone and changes interface scale based on viewing distance.

Siri AI handles general questions. When paired with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, it can use personal context from Messages, Calendar and Apple Music. Setup and personal-context actions require a compatible iPhone or iPad.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Show 5 (newest model), Smart display, Designed for Alexa+, 2x the bass and clearer sound, Charcoal
  • Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Apple positions HomeView as a shared household screen that becomes individual when it recognizes a face. It supports up to six recognized people, each with a personal Home Screen. Messages and Calendar information appears only when the enrolled person is recognized and the paired iPhone or iPad is present and has been recently unlocked.

Smart-home and media features

  • Controls Apple Home and Matter accessories, including lights, thermostats, locks, blinds and cameras.
  • Shows up to nine camera feeds simultaneously on the Home Camera face.
  • Supports FaceTime with Center Stage, Intercom, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple News and Apple TV, plus compatible third-party apps.
  • Can turn recipes into step-by-step cooking instructions and run hands-free timers, making the display useful when your hands are occupied.

Mounting costs

Apple lists the following U.S. accessory prices: a $59.95 USB-C wall connector, a $79.95 AC wired mount and a $129.95 Power over Ethernet (PoE) wired mount. The PoE option is planned for early 2027, so a wall installation can add substantially to the $299 device price.

Which display is best for each ecosystem?

Choose HomeView for an Apple household

HomeView’s advantage is continuity rather than raw screen size. It can expose Apple Home controls, Apple media, FaceTime and personal information without asking family members to switch ecosystems. Face recognition lets a shared screen show the right person’s information, while Matter support broadens accessory choices beyond Apple’s own catalog.

Amazon Echo Show 15 (newest model), Full HD 15.6" kitchen hub for home organization, with built-in Fire TV, Designed for Alexa+
  • MEET ECHO SHOW 15 - A stunning 15.6" Full-HD (1080p) smart display that's perfect for your kitchen and ready to show you more. Use customizable widgets to keep your day on track, watch your favorite shows with Fire TV and powerful vibrant sound, and enjoy natural video calling, with 3.3x zoom and wide field of view.
  • FAMILY ORGANIZATION HUB - See your top widgets at a glance, like your family’s calendars and to-do lists, local weather, smart home, and more.
  • ALL YOUR FAVORITES, ALL RIGHT HERE - Built-in Fire TV unlocks endless entertainment, so you can enjoy your favorite content from thousands of apps like Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and more (subscription may be required). Fire TV remote included. Plus, now you can quickly add a device to play music with Active Media - start playing a song in the kitchen, then add the living room and bedroom on the fly.
  • SMART HOME CENTRAL - Control smart devices with your voice or a few taps using the smart home dashboard. Easily turn on all your living room lights at once or check live camera feeds to see what's happening around your home.
  • YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.

That experience depends on owning a compatible iPhone or iPad for setup and personal-context features. If nobody in the household uses Apple Home, Apple Music or FaceTime, much of HomeView’s premium is difficult to justify.

Choose Echo Show 8 for Alexa breadth and mature routines

Tom’s Guide names the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) its best overall smart display. Its 8.7-inch screen is larger than HomeView’s, and the 13MP camera supports video calls. Alexa routines, Matter, Thread and Zigbee support make it a strong choice for households with a mixed smart-home accessory collection.

Omnisense presence sensing can make Alexa interactions more context-aware, and the speaker output is suited to bedrooms and kitchens. The trade-offs identified by Tom’s Guide are the lack of a physical camera privacy shutter and the absence of an eero Wi-Fi satellite function.

Choose Nest Hub for Google services and no camera

Tom’s Guide lists the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) as its best Google smart-home display. It has a 7-inch screen, no camera, Google Assistant and Gemini interaction, YouTube and other Google integrations, Soli sensing and sleep-tracking capability.

The hardware dates from 2021, but Google has continued to focus on software updates. Tom’s Guide describes it as a budget-friendly option. It is the clearest choice when YouTube, Google services or a camera-free design matter more than FaceTime or Apple Home integration.

Privacy and personal identity

HomeView’s privacy design is different from simply disabling a camera. Apple says Secure Exclaves isolate camera and microphone processing, and that requests handled by Private Cloud Compute are not stored or accessible to Apple. Those are Apple’s architectural and policy claims; no independent security audit is established here.

  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

HomeView’s personal data rules are specific: Messages and Calendar content requires both face recognition and the presence of a recently unlocked paired iPhone or iPad. Echo Show 8 includes a camera and presence sensing, while Nest Hub has no camera at all. Therefore, the privacy decision is not just about software settings; it is also about whether you want a camera in the room and whether your household values identity-aware information.

Can HomeView replace an Echo Show in the kitchen?

For an Apple household, yes, provided the required iPhone or iPad is available. HomeView can display recipes as sequential instructions, set hands-free timers, control lights and thermostats, and show camera feeds. Apple calls it a “perfect sous chef.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Echo Show 8 is the safer replacement when your kitchen already uses Alexa routines, Zigbee or Thread accessories, or Alexa-compatible cameras. Its larger 8.7-inch panel may also be easier to read from a distance. Nest Hub is preferable when YouTube and Google services are central, or when you do not want a camera in the kitchen.

Availability and buying requirements

Where and when HomeView launches

Apple lists pre-orders in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States beginning October 13, 2026. Singapore pre-orders begin October 15, and South African reseller pre-orders are also listed. Both tabletop and wall-mounted models are scheduled for November 13.

Siri AI support is listed in English for the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the U.K. Canadian French is planned for a later software update. Apple says HomeView is not currently available for sale in the European Union.

What to check before ordering

  1. Confirm that your country is in Apple’s launch list and that Siri AI is supported in your language.
  2. Verify that you have a compatible iPhone or iPad for setup and personal-context actions.
  3. List your existing accessories and check whether they use Apple Home, Matter, Thread, Zigbee or another platform.
  4. Choose tabletop or wall mounting, then add the appropriate connector or mount cost to the $299 U.S. device price.
  5. Decide whether your household is comfortable with face recognition and camera-enabled FaceTime, or whether a camera-free Nest Hub is a better fit.

How much confidence should you place in early reviews?

HomeView is announced but not yet supported by independent long-term home testing in the available coverage. TechRadar reported hands-on time in Apple’s demo space and said it was not enough for a full review; the reviewer had not tested the display in a home. Tom’s Guide has an established smart-display testing process but says its HomeView entry should wait until testing and review are complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the ecosystem and feature comparison clear, but questions such as everyday recognition accuracy, microphone behavior in a busy room, sustained battery or network performance, and long-term mount usability remain open until independent reviews are available.

The practical verdict

Buy HomeView when your household already uses iPhone, Apple Home, Apple Music or FaceTime and wants one shared display that becomes personal for up to six people. Buy Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) when Alexa routines, camera calls and Matter/Thread/Zigbee breadth are more important than Apple continuity. Buy Nest Hub (2nd Gen) when Google services, Gemini interaction, a camera-free design and budget positioning lead the decision.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
