Choose HomePod when Apple integration is the priority
HomePod is designed around Apple’s device and home ecosystem. Setup requires a compatible iPhone or iPad and Wi-Fi internet access. Once configured, Apple positions the speaker for Siri requests, control through the Home app, HomeKit smart-home use, AirPlay playback and Thread connectivity. The second-generation model also includes temperature and humidity sensors.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That combination makes HomePod most coherent when the people using it already carry iPhones or iPads and expect Apple’s interfaces to be the center of the home. AirPlay lets an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac send audio to the speaker, and Apple’s specifications list third-party music services and other audio sources. You are not limited to asking Siri to play only one catalog, but the day-to-day control model remains Apple-oriented.
What HomePod setup requires
- A compatible iPhone or iPad.
- Wi-Fi internet access.
- A mains power connection; Apple lists a power cable in the box.
If you are buying the speaker for someone who does not use an Apple mobile device, the setup requirement is an important practical limitation rather than a minor footnote.
HomePod as a smart-home hub
HomeKit and Thread support give HomePod a role beyond music in an Apple smart home. Siri can be used as the voice interface, while the Home app provides Apple’s control surface. The built-in temperature and humidity sensors can expose environmental readings in compatible Apple-home workflows. These features matter only if your household has adopted, or plans to adopt, Apple’s home platform; they do not make HomePod a neutral controller for every smart-home ecosystem.

Choose Era 100 when playback flexibility matters
Era 100 accepts audio over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2. Bluetooth is the clearest functional distinction: a phone, tablet or other compatible device can stream directly after pairing without relying on AirPlay. That is useful for visitors using non-Apple phones, for devices that do not expose AirPlay, or for quick playback without changing the Sonos system’s account and room controls.
Sonos setup uses the Sonos app over Wi-Fi. The speaker can be operated with Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa, although Sonos qualifies voice-service availability by language and country. Treat those services as region-dependent rather than guaranteed everywhere the hardware is sold.
Connecting a turntable or other analog source
Era 100 can accept an auxiliary source, but the input is not built into the speaker as a standard 3.5-millimeter socket. Sonos requires its separately sold Line-In Adapter plus an auxiliary cable. A turntable with a suitable output, a CD player or another line-level device can therefore feed the Sonos system, but you must add the adapter to the purchase if wired input is part of your plan.
Check the turntable’s output requirements before buying: the Era 100 documentation cited here establishes the adapter-and-auxiliary-cable requirement, not a built-in phono preamp. If your turntable provides only a raw phono signal, you need the appropriate external phono stage in addition to the Sonos adapter.

When Era 100’s flexibility is worth more than Apple convenience
- Your household mixes iPhone, Android and other source devices.
- You want Bluetooth playback as a normal, supported listening path.
- You want a Sonos app and room-grouping system rather than Apple Home controls.
- You may add a turntable or another analog source.
How the two speakers handle AirPlay, Bluetooth and sources
| Source or protocol | HomePod (2nd generation) | Era 100 |
|---|---|---|
| AirPlay | AirPlay from iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac; supports AirPlay multiroom | AirPlay 2 support |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.0 is listed in specifications; Apple does not describe it as general Bluetooth audio playback | Bluetooth 5.3 direct audio streaming |
| Wi-Fi | Required for setup and used for Apple ecosystem playback | Required for setup and Sonos streaming |
| Wired audio | No analog line-in listed by Apple | Auxiliary input through the separately sold Line-In Adapter and cable |
The distinction prevents a common buying mistake: a Bluetooth radio specification does not automatically mean a speaker accepts ordinary Bluetooth music streams. For HomePod, plan around AirPlay and Apple’s listed services. For Era 100, Bluetooth is an explicitly listed playback option.
Do not plan a cross-brand stereo pair
HomePod stereo pairing requires two HomePods of the same model. An Era 100 cannot become the second half of a HomePod stereo pair, and a HomePod cannot be added as a stereo partner inside Sonos. Choose the ecosystem in which you expect to build paired rooms.
HomePod multiroom
Apple supports AirPlay multiroom playback. You can send audio to multiple AirPlay destinations, while a dedicated stereo pair uses two matching HomePod models. The same-model condition matters if you are considering a second-generation HomePod alongside a different HomePod generation.
Era 100 multiroom
Era 100 grouping is managed in the Sonos system, with compatible stereo arrangements configured through Sonos. AirPlay 2 provides another way to send audio from Apple devices, but AirPlay compatibility does not merge Sonos and HomePod speakers into one shared stereo arrangement.
Sound quality: what the specifications establish—and what they do not
Apple and Sonos describe different approaches to room adaptation, but the cited pages do not provide a controlled, independent listening comparison. It would be misleading to turn either manufacturer’s engineering description into a universal winner.
HomePod’s calibration feature
Apple describes an “Internal low-frequency calibration microphone for automatic bass correction.” This explains the feature’s purpose; it is not evidence that HomePod sounds better than Era 100 in every room or at every volume.
Era 100’s Trueplay claim
Sonos says: “With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay™ tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ.” That is Sonos’s description of its tuning process, not an independent test result.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

How to decide if sound is the deciding factor
- Audition both speakers in the same room if a retailer or friend makes that possible.
- Use the same recording and source quality for each.
- Match playback levels; a louder speaker can seem better even when it is not.
- Listen from your normal seating position, not only close to the speaker.
- Give room-correction features comparable treatment before judging.
No independent statistics for sound quality, latency, reliability or voice accuracy are established by the manufacturer pages cited here.
Size, placement and power
| Specification | HomePod (2nd generation) | Era 100 |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 5.6 inches | 4.72 inches |
| Height | 6.6 inches | 7.19 inches |
| Depth | Not separately stated in the cited Apple specification summary | 5.14 inches |
| Weight | 5.16 pounds | 4.45 pounds |
| Power | Mains power; Apple lists a power cable in the box | Mains power; Sonos lists a six-foot power cable |
HomePod is shorter but heavier. Era 100 is taller and slightly lighter, with a narrower listed width. Neither is a battery speaker, so placement should include access to an outlet and enough clearance for the speaker’s intended operation. The dimensions above are manufacturer specifications, not a recommendation to place either model in a particular acoustic position.
Price and the real cost of each setup
The cited Apple technical-specifications page does not establish a current US HomePod price. Check Apple’s regional store or authorized retailers at the time you buy; do not infer a current price from an older listing.
Sonos’s US Era 100 page showed $219 when accessed on October 13, 2026. That is a volatile listing figure, not a guaranteed price. Confirm the live price, taxes, shipping and any promotion before purchasing.

Setup walkthroughs
Set up HomePod
- Place HomePod near a mains outlet and connect the supplied power cable.
- Have a compatible iPhone or iPad ready and connect it to Wi-Fi internet access.
- Use Apple’s Home setup flow on the iPhone or iPad to add the HomePod.

Decision guide by household
You already use iPhone and Apple Home
HomePod is the more natural match. Its setup, Siri control, HomeKit and Thread support, AirPlay behavior and same-model stereo-pair rule all align with an Apple-centered home. Confirm that you have a compatible iPhone or iPad and Wi-Fi before ordering.
Your home mixes phones and platforms
Era 100 is usually the safer choice when visitors or family members need direct Bluetooth playback. AirPlay 2 still serves Apple devices, while Bluetooth provides a separate path for devices outside Apple’s ecosystem.
Recommended Free Tools
You want a turntable
Choose Era 100 only after adding the Line-In Adapter and auxiliary cable to your plan. HomePod’s cited specifications do not list an analog line-in, so it is not the straightforward wired-source option here.
You want synchronized rooms
Stay within one ecosystem for the rooms you want to group or stereo-pair. HomePod uses AirPlay and requires matching HomePod models for a stereo pair; Era 100 uses Sonos grouping and Sonos-compatible stereo configuration. Buying one of each does not create a shared cross-brand stereo system.
You care only about which sounds better
Do not choose from the feature sheets alone. Arrange a same-room audition or consult an independent comparison that controls source, listening level and placement. The cited Apple and Sonos pages do not establish a head-to-head sound winner.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming HomePod’s Bluetooth specification means Bluetooth music
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.0, but its playback description centers on AirPlay and Apple’s listed services. If ordinary Bluetooth streaming is a requirement, Era 100 is the model whose product page explicitly lists it.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

Trying to pair the brands together
HomePod stereo pairs require two identical HomePod models, while Sonos stereo and grouping functions are managed inside Sonos. AirPlay support does not remove those ecosystem boundaries.
Treating voice availability as universal
Sonos qualifies Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control by language and country. Check local availability rather than assuming every voice service works in every market.
Using a manufacturer tuning statement as a listening-test result
Automatic bass correction and Trueplay EQ optimization describe product features. They do not prove that one speaker will sound better in your room, with your music, at your preferred volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich one should you buy?
Buy the Apple HomePod (2nd generation) when your priorities are an iPhone-based setup, Siri, Apple Home/HomeKit, Thread, AirPlay and a matching HomePod stereo or multiroom system. Its Apple-device requirement is part of the product’s identity, so it is a strength for an Apple household and a constraint for everyone else.
Buy the Sonos Era 100 when direct Bluetooth streaming, Sonos app control, Sonos grouping or an optional analog source matters more than Apple-native smart-home integration. Its line-in capability is useful for a turntable, but only after purchasing the separate adapter and cable.
If feature fit is even, sound quality should be decided by a controlled audition or a trustworthy independent comparison. The available official specifications support an ecosystem and connectivity decision—not a scientifically established winner.
