If you want an Apple smart speaker and home hub now, the HomePod (2nd generation) is the only option here with officially documented features. If a screen-based control point is essential, waiting may make sense—but Apple had not announced its rumored smart home hub as of October 4, 2026, so its specifications, price and release date remain unconfirmed.

Apple Home and Matter
Apple says HomePod can control Matter-enabled accessories and act as a home hub for remote access. Apple’s announcement also describes using Siri to control individual accessories, scenes and recurring automations, including temperature-based automations that use the built-in sensor. Check the exact accessory model’s compatibility and setup requirements; Matter support does not mean every smart-home product works with every configuration. Apple’s HomePod announcement

Sound-recognition notifications are not alarm replacement
Apple announced notifications when HomePod recognizes the sound of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm. Treat this as an added notification feature, not a certified replacement for alarms or emergency monitoring. Apple cautions against relying on Sound Recognition in situations where harm or injury could result. Apple’s announcement and caution

What has been reported about the rumored hub
Coverage citing Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has described a possible HomePod-like speaker with a 7-inch display, with tabletop and wall-mounted versions. Reported potential uses include Siri AI, FaceTime, smart-home controls, security monitoring, photos, calendar, music and intercom. None of these details is an Apple-confirmed specification. MacRumors, August 24, 2026
A separate roundup published July 15 described a square 7-inch display, camera, facial recognition, presence detection, possible apps and an approximate $350 price. Those too are reported possibilities, and reports may change or differ; they should not be combined into a definitive product spec sheet. MacRumors, July 15, 2026

Launch timing is not settled
A September 30, 2026 report said an October 13 announcement was expected for other Apple hardware, including Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2, while the full-size HomePod was not part of that expected group. It said the full-size model would be updated “eventually,” without a date. This was reported expectation, not confirmation from Apple that the hub would be announced on that date. 9to5Mac, September 30, 2026

Choose based on what your home actually needs
Choose HomePod if audio and a working hub matter more than a display
- You want a smart speaker with Apple-published specifications rather than an unannounced product.
- You want Matter accessory control and remote Apple Home access through a home hub.
- You are comfortable using voice and touch controls instead of a screen for quick visual status.
Apple’s launch price was $299 in the United States in 2023; check current retailer listings for today’s price and availability rather than treating that historical figure as current.
Wait if a screen is a must-have
- You want visual access to smart-home controls or household information at a glance.
- You can wait until Apple confirms the product, its functions and its price.
- You are willing to decide later based on actual specifications rather than reported possibilities.
There is not yet a confirmed hub price to compare with current HomePod offers. The approximately $350 figure is only a July 2026 rumor.
Quick Recap
How to decide before buying accessories or waiting
- List the jobs you need done. Separate audio playback and voice control from screen-specific tasks such as viewing information or controls.
- Check each accessory by exact model. Confirm Matter and Apple Home compatibility and any required setup before assuming it will work with HomePod.
- Set a wait threshold. If a display is essential, wait for Apple to confirm the product. If it is optional and you need a speaker now, assess HomePod on its documented capabilities.
- Compare real prices when you are ready. Use current retail listings for HomePod and wait for an official hub price; neither the HomePod’s 2023 launch price nor the rumored hub price establishes what you will pay now.
