If an always-visible screen is essential, wait for official details rather than buying on the strength of rumors. Apple currently presents HomePod and HomePod mini as speakers, while reports about a screen-equipped hub remain unconfirmed.
What is confirmed about HomePad and HomePod?
Apple’s Home page lists HomePod and HomePod mini. Apple describes the full-size HomePod as an immersive, high-fidelity audio speaker and the mini as a smaller speaker option. The reviewed Apple pages do not announce a product called HomePad; that does not establish whether Apple might introduce one later.

HomePad is a name used in reports about a possible display-equipped smart-home hub, not an official product specification. That distinction matters: there is no confirmed HomePad price, release date, retail availability, or final product name to compare with Apple’s current speakers.
How do the rumored HomePad and current HomePods differ?
| Option | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| HomePod | Apple lists it as a speaker and positions the full-size model for immersive, high-fidelity audio. | This comparison has no independent sound, privacy, or responsiveness test establishing a winner. |
| HomePod mini | Apple lists it as a smaller speaker. Its specifications include HomeKit, Thread, temperature and humidity sensors, four microphones, 360-degree sound, AirPlay multiroom audio, and stereo pairing. See Apple’s technical specifications. | Compatibility for a particular accessory or setup should be checked against that accessory’s requirements; a general feature list does not guarantee every configuration. |
| Reported HomePad | MacRumors reported a possible display-equipped hub, including a seven-inch screen and possible wall-mounted or speaker-base configurations. These are rumors, not Apple specifications (July 15, 2026 roundup). | Apple has not confirmed the product, name, screen, configurations, features, price, or availability in the reviewed pages. |
What do reports say about HomePad?
Rumors describe a product combining a HomePod-like speaker with a seven-inch display. MacRumors’ August 24, 2026 coverage, relaying Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s newsletter, also discussed possible tabletop and wall versions, facial recognition, personalized information, FaceTime, intercom, home-security monitoring, photos, calendar, and music playback. None of those details is an official Apple commitment: MacRumors, August 24, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium, immersive, high-fidelity audio
Tom’s Guide reported a rumor of an October 13, 2026 announcement. The reviewed sources do not establish that Apple confirmed that date or an event, so it should not be treated as a scheduled launch: Tom’s Guide, September 30, 2026. A separate report put the possible price around $350, but that figure is also unconfirmed and should not be used as a current Apple price: MacRumors, July 15, 2026.

Choose a current HomePod if you want a speaker now
Apple’s current product pages give buyers two speaker routes. The full-size HomePod is Apple’s option for its stated high-fidelity-audio focus; HomePod mini is the smaller option with documented smart-home features. Apple’s descriptions are product positioning, not a side-by-side independent listening test.

Choose HomePod mini if its documented smart-home features fit
Apple lists HomeKit and Thread among HomePod mini’s features. For Thread accessories, Apple Support says: “Thread‑based accessories require a Thread‑enabled home hub, such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini or a third‑party Thread border router.” Check the accessory’s actual requirements and your home configuration before choosing a hub: Apple Support: Thread-enabled home hubs.

Wait if a built-in screen is the deciding feature
If you specifically want a display for at-a-glance controls or other screen-based uses, waiting for Apple to publish official details is the more reliable choice. Rumored features and pricing do not establish what a final product will include or when it will be available.
