Matter is a cross-platform connectivity standard; HomeKit is Apple’s framework and user experience for controlling supported accessories. Apple Home can handle both Matter accessories and devices using Apple’s HomeKit Accessory Protocol. A Matter logo therefore does not guarantee that every device feature, radio option, or product category will work in Apple Home. Check the exact model, supported category, required hub, connection type, and Apple Home feature list before you buy.
HomeKit and Matter solve different problems
Matter defines how compatible smart-home products communicate and interoperate across platforms. Apple describes it as a connectivity standard intended to let accessories work together across platforms and give customers more choice and interoperability. Apple’s explanation is available in its Matter support documentation.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn practical terms, a product can be:
- A traditional HomeKit accessory using Apple’s HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP).
- A Matter accessory that can be added to Apple Home as well as other Matter-compatible ecosystems.
- A product that supports Matter but belongs to a category or exposes features that Apple Home does not currently support.
- A device that requires Thread infrastructure even though its packaging prominently displays the Matter logo.
That last distinction is why “Matter” alone is not a sufficient buying decision. Compatibility is determined at the intersection of the exact model, its certified device category, Apple’s current support, the radio it uses, and the features the manufacturer has chosen to expose.

What Matter support does—and does not—promise in Apple Home
Apple Home supports Matter accessories alongside HAP devices. Apple says iOS 16.1 and later includes Matter support. When a compatible accessory is paired, Apple Home can present its supported controls and make them available through Apple surfaces such as the Home app and Siri.
Matter certification does not promise complete feature parity with the manufacturer’s own application. A maker may expose basic on/off control to Apple Home while reserving advanced schedules, energy graphs, calibration, scenes, consumable warnings, or device-specific modes for its app. The precise behavior is model-specific, so read the product’s Apple Home compatibility statement and current support article rather than assuming that a Matter-certified device will look identical in every ecosystem.
Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge guidelines are a useful screening tool. The badge is intended to indicate Matter-certified compatibility with Apple Home and Siri, and Apple specifies the compatibility language manufacturers should use. Treat the badge as evidence that the product is intended to work with Apple Home—not as a promise that every vendor feature appears there.
Categories Apple currently identifies for the badge
Apple’s published list includes these Matter accessory categories:

Wi-Fi versus Thread: the radio matters as much as the logo
Matter is an application and interoperability standard; it does not mean every product uses the same network. Matter accessories commonly use Wi-Fi or Thread for their connection to the home network. Some products use Ethernet through a bridge, while Bluetooth may be used during commissioning. The box and technical specifications should identify the operational network.
| Connection | What it means for Apple Home | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi Matter | The accessory joins your Wi-Fi network during setup. A compatible Apple home hub is still used for remote access and automations. | Does the product support your Wi-Fi band and network security settings? Does it require a 2.4 GHz setup network? |
| Thread Matter | The accessory joins a low-power Thread mesh. Apple says a Thread-enabled home hub is required. | Do you already have a compatible Thread-enabled Apple home hub? Is the hub’s software current? |
| Bridge-based Matter | A bridge connects a group of devices and exposes supported functions to Apple Home. | Which devices and features does the bridge actually expose, and does the bridge remain powered? |
Apple’s badge guidance also distinguishes Thread products from non-Thread products and calls out older Apple TV and HomePod configurations that need a compatible Thread border router. Hardware generations and software requirements can change, so check the current wording on Apple’s badge guidance and the accessory packaging before ordering.
For Thread products specifically, Apple Support says a Thread-enabled home hub is necessary. Its current list of supported hub examples and setup requirements is maintained in Pair and manage your Matter accessories. Do not assume that owning any Apple TV or HomePod automatically provides the required Thread function.

What you need before adding a Matter accessory
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 16.1 or later, because Apple says that release introduced Matter support.
- The latest available software for your Apple devices, home hub, and accessory.
- The accessory’s Matter setup code, normally printed on the product, quick-start card, or packaging.
- A stable home network. For Wi-Fi products, have the correct network credentials available; for Thread products, verify the Thread-enabled Apple home hub requirement first.
- The manufacturer’s app only when the model requires it for firmware updates, account creation, calibration, or features not exposed in Apple Home.
- A location for the accessory within reliable wireless range. Thread devices depend on a functioning Thread mesh, while Wi-Fi devices depend on your access-point coverage.
Keep the setup code after installation. Matter commissioning information is valuable when moving the accessory to another controller or recovering from a reset, and some products print only one physical copy.
How to add a Matter accessory to Apple Home
The exact labels can vary slightly by Apple operating-system release and accessory, but Apple’s documented flow starts in the Home app and uses the Matter setup code.
- Confirm the model and network type. Read the box or manual to determine whether the accessory uses Wi-Fi or Thread. If it is Thread-based, confirm that your Apple home hub is Thread-enabled using Apple’s current support requirements.
- Power the accessory and place it in pairing mode. Follow the model-specific quick-start instructions. Some products enter pairing mode automatically on first power-up; others require a button press or reset sequence.
- Open the Home app. Tap the + Add button, choose Add Accessory, and allow the app to use the camera if prompted.
- Scan the Matter setup code. Scan the QR code supplied with the accessory, or choose the option to enter the numeric code manually if the camera cannot read it.
- Approve network provisioning. Apple says iOS can provision the accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. Keep the phone near the accessory and do not interrupt power during this stage.
- Assign the accessory. Choose a room, give it a clear name, and select any suggested accessory type. A name such as “Hallway outlet” is more useful to Siri than a model number.
- Test the controls that appeared. Turn the device on and off, change the available setting, and confirm that the state updates in the Home app. If a control is missing, check the model’s Apple Home feature documentation rather than assuming setup failed.
- Update firmware in the vendor app if required. Some manufacturers require their app for firmware or advanced configuration even when daily control is available in Apple Home.
Apple also documents cross-app Matter pairing. An accessory first commissioned through another Matter-supporting ecosystem can, with the user’s permission and subject to the accessory’s capabilities, be made available to additional Matter-supporting apps. The accessory must support the relevant multi-admin behavior, and each ecosystem still shows only the controls it supports.

Buying checklist: verify these details on the exact model
- Apple Home support: Look for an explicit Works with Apple Home statement or the current model listing, not just a generic Matter logo.
- Category: Confirm that Apple Home supports the accessory’s category. If the product combines categories, verify each function separately.
- Feature exposure: Read the manufacturer’s Apple Home notes for controls, sensors, modes, and automations. Compare them with the vendor app’s feature list.
- Radio: Identify Wi-Fi, Thread, bridge, or another connection method. Do not buy a Thread model without confirming your hub and border-router situation.
- Hub: Check whether remote access, automations, or Thread commissioning require a compatible Apple home hub and whether your hardware generation qualifies.
- Software: Verify the minimum iOS/iPadOS, tvOS, HomePod software, and accessory-firmware versions.
- Account and app requirements: Determine whether the manufacturer requires an account or app for setup, firmware, cloud functions, or warranty support.
- Reset and recovery: Find the model-specific reset procedure and keep the Matter setup code in a secure place.
- Regional and electrical details: For powered products, confirm voltage, plug format, radio certifications, and availability in your country. Apple’s accessory listings are not a substitute for local electrical compatibility.
HomeKit accessory versus Matter accessory
| Decision factor | Traditional HomeKit accessory | Matter accessory used with Apple Home |
|---|---|---|
| Primary standard | Apple HomeKit Accessory Protocol | Matter, with Apple Home acting as one controller ecosystem |
| Cross-platform potential | Depends on the product’s other protocols and integrations | Designed for multi-platform Matter ecosystems, subject to category and feature support |
| Apple Home controls | Defined by the accessory’s HomeKit implementation | Defined by the Matter device type, Apple Home support, and the manufacturer’s implementation |
| Network requirement | Varies by product and generation | Usually Wi-Fi or Thread; verify the exact radio |
| Thread hub question | Only relevant when the product itself uses Thread | Essential for Thread-based Matter accessories in Apple Home |
| Vendor app | May be optional or required for setup and advanced features | May still be required for firmware, account features, or controls outside Apple Home |
There is no universal winner. Choose a traditional HomeKit product when its documented Apple Home implementation already provides the controls you need and you do not need Matter’s cross-platform flexibility. Choose Matter when you value the option to commission the accessory in more than one compatible ecosystem, while accepting that support remains model- and platform-specific.

Common setup failures and precise fixes
The QR code will not scan
- Increase the screen or paper brightness and hold the code parallel to the camera.
- Use the manual numeric-code entry option in the Home app.
- Make sure you are scanning the Matter code, not a Wi-Fi onboarding or manufacturer-app code.
- If the accessory was previously commissioned, follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure before trying again.
The accessory is found but cannot finish pairing
- Confirm that the accessory is still in pairing mode and has power.
- Move the phone and accessory closer to the access point or Thread-capable hub.
- Check that the iPhone or iPad meets the iOS 16.1-or-later requirement and is signed in to the intended Apple Home.
- For Thread, verify the required Thread-enabled home hub and current software. A non-Thread hub cannot substitute for that requirement.
The device works in the vendor app but not in Apple Home
Being visible in a manufacturer’s app does not prove that Apple Home supports the model’s category or every function. Check the Apple Home compatibility statement, confirm that the device was commissioned to Apple Home, and look for firmware updates. If the product is a bridge, verify that the specific child device is among the functions the bridge exposes to Apple Home.
Basic controls work but advanced features are missing
This is often expected rather than a failed installation. Matter and Apple Home expose standardized device functions, while manufacturer apps may add proprietary modes or analytics. Use the vendor app for capabilities it alone provides, and use Apple Home for the controls and automations it presents.
Remote control or automations do not work when away from home
Check that your Apple home has a compatible home hub online and that the accessory remains connected to its Wi-Fi or Thread network. A local pairing success does not by itself guarantee remote access. Review the hub status in the Home app and the accessory maker’s network requirements before resetting the device.

Apple’s security guide says commands are “sent, end-to-end encrypted and authenticated” from a user’s device to the home hub, then forwarded to the accessory using HAP or Matter. The full explanation is in Apple’s HomeKit communication security documentation.

That statement describes Apple’s communication path; it does not eliminate the need to secure your Wi-Fi, update accessory firmware, protect Matter setup codes, and review permissions for people invited to your home. A vendor cloud account may still be involved in features outside local Apple Home control, so read the model’s privacy and account requirements separately.
Where to confirm current compatibility
Use Apple’s documentation as the authority for requirements that can change with operating-system releases:
- Apple Developer: Matter support in iOS — Matter’s role and iOS support.
- Apple Developer: Developing apps and accessories for the home — Apple Home and accessory framework context.
- Works with Apple Home badge guidelines — supported categories and labeling requirements.
- Apple Support: Pair and manage your Matter accessories — pairing flow, hub requirements, and cross-app guidance.
- Apple’s HomeKit-compatible accessory listings — an illustrative place to inspect current products, including Matter-enabled options such as Eve Energy; verify the exact model and regional listing.
For any purchase, use those pages together with the accessory maker’s current model-specific manual. Packaging, firmware, regional availability, and Apple’s supported categories can change independently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Matter logo automatically mean a device works with Apple Home?
No. Matter indicates a connectivity standard, not universal Apple Home support. Confirm the exact model’s category, Apple Home labeling, controls, radio, and hub requirements.
Can one Matter accessory be used in Apple Home and another smart-home app?
Often, yes. Apple documents cross-app Matter pairing, but the accessory must support the relevant multi-admin capability and each app may expose different controls.
Do I need a Thread border router for every Matter product?
No. Thread requirements apply to Thread-based accessories. Wi-Fi Matter products use Wi-Fi instead; Apple’s current guidance identifies the hub and border-router hardware needed for Thread configurations.
