Choose HomeKit Secure Video if your household already relies on Apple Home and you want supported doorbells managed in the Home app with iCloud+ recording. Choose Ring if you prefer its dedicated app, need a broad choice of battery and hardwired models, and are willing to pay for a compatible Ring plan to review saved events. The better choice depends on the exact doorbell, your wiring and Wi-Fi, the number of cameras, and how much recorded history you need.
Neither label guarantees compatibility by itself. “Works with Apple Home” does not always mean “supports HomeKit Secure Video,” and Ring’s features vary by model, plan and location. Use the comparison below to check the complete setup before buying.

How HomeKit Secure Video works
HomeKit Secure Video is Apple’s recording layer for compatible security cameras added to the Home app. The camera sends activity to the home hub, which Apple says analyzes the video on-device to determine whether an event should be recorded to iCloud. Apple describes the stored footage as end-to-end encrypted and says it does not count against the ordinary iCloud storage quota.
#1 Best Overall
- Works with HomeKit Secure Video and All Major Ecosystems: Fully compatible with Apple HomeKit Secure Video (HSV) for encrypted recording, iCloud storage, and real-time notifications directly on Apple devices. Also compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. Pro-level compatibility provides more options via RTSP/ONVIF support, NVR integration, and other advanced setups. *Note: To use this device with HomeKit Secure Video, an iCloud+ plan and an Apple home hub are required.
- 2K HD 165° Head-to-Toe Vision: See everything from packages at your feet to faces at the door. Featuring 2K HD resolution and a 165° ultra-wide field of view with a 3:4 aspect ratio, the G400 doorbell camera provides a vertical perspective that traditional 16:9 cameras miss. Equipped with nearly invisible 940nm infrared LEDs, this doorbell captures bright, high-definition video in total darkness, monitoring discreetly without alerting intruders or disturbing neighbors. *Note: When connected to Apple HomeKit, the resolution is limited to 1200p. This limitation also applies to Aqara Home when both platforms are used simultaneously.
- Reliable Hardwired Power & Stable Wi-Fi 6: You can utilize the high-efficiency PoE connection or reuse your existing 8–24V AC/DC wiring, simplifying the upgrade path while maintaining stability. Additionally, the Wi-Fi video doorbell supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6 and meets WPA3 security standards for reliable and secure connections.
- Local AI Detections & Custom Replies: Reduce false alarms with local person recognition and zone intrusion, ensuring you're instantly notified when it matters, with no cloud processing required. When someone rings, use custom quick replies or the voice-changing intercom to answer the door safely. Our wired doorbell camera also features visitor face recognition and cloud package identification for total peace of mind.
- IP65 Weatherproof & Easy Setup: Built to withstand the elements with an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance, it works flawlessly in wind and rain. The package includes a wedge kit for optimal positioning and a plug-in chime for indoor alerts. The smart doorbell supports 24/7 continuous recording directly to a microSD card (up to 512GB, not included). For added peace of mind, all local footage is automatically backed up to your SMB-compatible NAS server, keeping your video safe and secure.
The practical result is a single Apple interface: live video, notifications and recorded activity appear alongside other Home accessories. You can view compatible cameras from an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV. The service is not a generic capability of every camera that appears in Apple Home; the individual product must support HomeKit Secure Video.
iCloud+ camera limits
Apple’s camera allowances are tied to the iCloud+ storage tier, not to the number of Apple Home households you create:
- 50 GB: one camera.
- 200 GB: up to five cameras.
- 2 TB or higher: an unlimited number of cameras.
Apple states that HomeKit Secure Video activity history covers the last 10 days. That retention window is a service specification, not a promise that every event will remain available indefinitely. If you need a longer archive, you should verify whether the doorbell or another recording system offers a separate export or storage path.
Doorbells currently identified by Apple
On Apple’s compatibility page dated October 13, 2026, the HomeKit Secure Video list names three doorbells:
- Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4
- Logitech Circle View Doorbell
- LG Video Doorbell Wired
Other doorbells can appear in Apple’s accessory listings without the Secure Video designation. Check the feature label for the exact model and regional variant before assuming that Apple Home support includes recording.
The LG Video Doorbell Wired announcement
Apple announced the LG Video Doorbell Wired on October 13, 2026. Apple’s announcement describes separate visitor and package views, a built-in spotlight and chimes through HomeView, HomePod and HomePod mini. It gives the front camera a 2.5K specification and the bottom camera a full HD specification. Apple also says the collection’s cameras provide 10 days of event history with iCloud+ and that eligible plans add Apple Intelligence video descriptions and natural-language search.

What Ring provides
Ring doorbells are operated through the Ring app. Ring says setup and use require home Wi-Fi plus a mobile phone or tablet. The doorbells combine a camera with two-way talk and send activity notifications to a mobile device.
What works without a subscription
Ring says a user can open live video and respond to a doorbell notification without subscribing. That makes an unsubscribed doorbell useful for answering a visitor in real time, but it does not provide the same review workflow as a recording plan.
When a plan is required
Ring requires a compatible subscription to save, review and share recorded events. Its support page describes tiers covering one device or all devices at a single location, with higher tiers and add-ons providing additional features. Ring says motion-event videos can be stored in the cloud for up to 180 days from the recording date. Actual access, retention and feature availability depend on the plan, doorbell model and location.
Do not treat the 180-day figure as a universal guarantee for every Ring video. Before subscribing, check the current plan description for the exact device and country, and determine whether the tier covers every camera at the address or only one.
Regional restrictions on advanced features
Ring documents jurisdictional restrictions for certain advanced functions. Some features have specific limitations in Illinois, while Familiar Faces has restrictions listed for Illinois, Texas and Portland, Oregon. Availability can change with local law and service terms, so a feature shown in general product material should not be assumed to work in every region.

Power, wiring and installation decisions
The recording platform does not determine whether a particular doorbell will fit your entrance. Confirm the hardware requirements separately.
HomeKit-compatible models
Apple’s accessory list establishes feature compatibility, not electrical compatibility. Use the doorbell maker’s installation guide to check whether the unit needs existing low-voltage wiring, a particular transformer, a mechanical or electronic chime, or a dedicated power adapter. If your current chime or transformer is unusual, resolve that question before selecting a model.
Ring battery and wired models
Ring sells both battery-powered and hardwired doorbells. Ring’s support material notes that a battery model connected to an internal chime remains primarily battery-powered and receives only a trickle charge; wiring it does not automatically turn it into a fully powered wired installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For applicable Ring devices, Ring gives transformer guidance of 8–24 V AC, 40 V maximum, at 50/60 Hz. It says intercom systems and DC transformers are incompatible. These figures are not a universal specification for every Ring model. Match the exact model’s installation guide to the transformer already in the house, and do not connect a doorbell to a DC supply or an intercom circuit merely because the voltage appears similar.
A pre-purchase wiring checklist
- Identify whether the entrance has existing two-wire doorbell cable, an intercom, or no doorbell wiring.
- Record the transformer’s output and whether it supplies AC or DC.
- Identify the existing chime type and whether it must continue to ring.
- Check the selected model’s required voltage, current and included accessories.
- Confirm that the Wi-Fi signal reaches the mounting position reliably.
- Plan battery access and charging if the model is not continuously powered.
Privacy, storage and control
HomeKit Secure Video’s privacy model is integrated with Apple’s Home architecture. Apple says the home hub analyzes activity on-device, recordings are end-to-end encrypted and the footage does not consume the ordinary iCloud storage allocation. These are Apple’s descriptions of its service; they are not an independent security audit.
Ring’s cited material focuses on the Ring app, cloud recording and subscription controls. It does not establish that a Ring doorbell can place its recordings into HomeKit Secure Video. If your household wants one Apple Home timeline and Apple’s stated encryption model, select a doorbell explicitly marked for HomeKit Secure Video rather than assuming that a Ring device will inherit those properties.

Can you use Ring with HomeKit Secure Video?
The available official material does not establish an equivalent, native path that records a Ring doorbell through HomeKit Secure Video. Ring’s documented workflow is the Ring app, Ring notifications and Ring’s own cloud plans. HomeKit Secure Video, meanwhile, requires a compatible camera carrying Apple’s feature designation.
That means a mixed household should plan on two separate experiences unless the exact products and current software documentation say otherwise: Apple Home for the supported HomeKit cameras and the Ring app for the Ring doorbell. Do not buy on the assumption that a generic “smart home” or “works with Apple Home” badge provides shared recording, one timeline or one subscription.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which setup fits your household?
Pick HomeKit Secure Video when
- Apple Home is already the interface your household uses every day.
- You want compatible cameras visible on Apple devices, including Apple TV.
- You accept iCloud+ as part of the ongoing service and your camera count fits its tier.
- Apple’s stated end-to-end encryption and home-hub processing are priorities.
- You are prepared to verify the exact doorbell’s wiring and chime requirements separately.
Pick Ring when
- You prefer a dedicated doorbell app and its notification-response workflow.
- You want to choose between battery and hardwired models from the Ring range.
- Live viewing and two-way talk without a subscription meet your needs.
- You are comfortable subscribing when you need saved-event review, sharing or longer cloud retention.
- You have checked the plan, device and regional availability of any advanced feature you expect to use.
Use a total-ownership comparison
Compare more than the purchase price. List the compatible doorbell, required transformer or charging routine, chime arrangement, Wi-Fi conditions, number of cameras, recording window, subscription tier and the app every resident can use. A cheaper camera can become the less suitable choice if it requires wiring changes, a second app or a plan that does not cover the household’s camera count.
A step-by-step buying process
- Count the cameras. Decide whether this is one doorbell or a larger camera system. For HomeKit Secure Video, compare that count with Apple’s iCloud+ allowance.
- Choose the control app. Decide whether the household wants Apple Home or the Ring app as its daily interface. Include the phones, tablets, computers and television devices people actually use.
- Verify feature-level compatibility. For an Apple route, confirm the exact doorbell is marked HomeKit Secure Video compatible. For Ring, confirm the model’s feature list and current plan support.
- Inspect power and chime conditions. Read the model-specific installation guide, measure or identify the transformer, and check the existing chime or intercom before ordering.
- Check network coverage. Both approaches depend on a stable connection at the door. Ring explicitly requires home Wi-Fi; Apple-camera operation also depends on the network and home-hub arrangement used by the Home setup.
- Calculate recurring service needs. Include iCloud+ for HomeKit recording or a Ring plan for saved recordings. If you only need live answers, confirm that the no-subscription behavior meets your expectations.
- Confirm regional terms. Check current availability, retention rules and jurisdiction-specific restrictions for the address where the doorbell will operate.
- Verify stock before finalizing. This is especially important for newly announced products such as the LG Video Doorbell Wired, whose announcement does not itself establish retail availability.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing Apple Home support with Secure Video support
A doorbell can be listed as compatible with Apple Home without carrying the Secure Video designation. Look for the specific recording feature, not only the ecosystem badge.
Assuming a wired connection means continuous power
On applicable Ring battery models, wiring to an internal chime provides only a trickle charge while the battery remains the primary power source. Read the model documentation before removing a charging routine from your maintenance plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using the wrong transformer
Ring’s stated guidance for applicable products is AC power in a defined voltage range, and its support page excludes intercom systems and DC transformers. A similar-looking voltage does not make an incompatible supply safe.

Budgeting only for hardware
HomeKit recording requires iCloud+; Ring recording review requires a compatible subscription. Put those service terms beside the hardware cost when comparing systems.
Assuming every advanced feature is universal
Ring identifies jurisdictional limits for some features, and Apple describes certain newer analysis tools as available only with eligible plans. Check the current terms for your region and tier.
Treating vendor specifications as test results
Apple’s encryption, camera-resolution and feature descriptions, along with Ring’s retention statements, are vendor claims. They do not independently establish image quality, latency, reliability or installation difficulty.
