Open Home Settings and review cameras, people, guest access, Activity History, attribution and video-summary controls individually. A camera can be configured to stop recording while someone is home without affecting an exterior camera; a guest can receive scheduled access to one door without becoming a resident; and lock events can remain visible to owners and residents for up to 30 days.

Start with the privacy boundaries Apple Home actually uses
Apple Home privacy is not one master switch. It is a set of controls operating at different levels:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Camera behavior: whether a camera streams, records, and sends motion notifications when the home is occupied or empty.
- Person-level camera access: which household members may watch a live stream, view recordings, connect remotely, or manage cameras.
- Lock permissions: whether someone is an owner, resident or guest, which doors they can use, whether access is local-only, and whether a schedule applies.
- History and attribution: who can see lock activity and whether a member’s name appears in arrival, departure or accessory-interaction notifications.
- Video summaries: separate controls for HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) summaries and reduced notifications.
Reviewing only one layer leaves a common gap. For example, pausing recording while home does not stop a person who still has permission to view an exterior camera. Removing a person from the household does not by itself tell you whether a lock’s old access code remains configured; inspect the lock’s access screen as well.

Audit cameras in this order
1. Confirm ordinary Home support versus HomeKit Secure Video
A camera can work with Apple Home for live viewing and basic motion alerts without supporting HomeKit Secure Video recording. HKSV adds encrypted recording and a 10-day activity window when the home uses a qualifying iCloud+ plan. Streaming and HKSV recording are different capabilities, so do not assume that a camera shown in the Home app automatically has encrypted cloud clips or the same notification conditions.
Apple describes HKSV as an end-to-end mechanism for recording, analyzing and viewing clips without exposing the video content to Apple or another third party. That is Apple’s documented design claim, not an independent security audit. The camera, hub, operating-system version and plan must all support the relevant feature.
2. Open the camera’s notification controls
- Open the Home app.
- Go to Home Settings → Cameras & Doorbells.
- Select a camera and open Activity Notifications.
- Review whether motion alerts are enabled and which conditions apply.
Compatible cameras can notify on motion. HKSV cameras may add controls for time, whether the home is in Home or Away mode, whether recording is active, and the type of motion detected. Depending on the accessory, categories can include people or packages. Treat these as notification filters, not proof that every event will be detected: lighting, camera placement, network availability and the accessory’s own capabilities affect results.

3. Set recording separately for When Home and When Away
In the same camera settings, open Recording Options. Configure When Home and When Away independently. This lets you pause an indoor camera when a household member is home while leaving an outdoor camera recording, or keep a particular interior camera active under both modes for a stated security reason.
Home and Away switching uses the locations of home members’ devices. If a member’s phone is offline, location permission is disabled, or the location is stale, the mode may not change when expected. Check the current Home status before treating a camera as private. A recording choice is a household decision rather than a universal rule: an interior camera may be paused for privacy, while a camera covering an entryway may remain active.

The Aqara Camera G100 requires a power adapter with DC 5V/1A output which is not included in the box. Zigbee2MQTT and comparable third-party USB dongles are not officially supported by Aqara. Full product functionality may be limited or unavailable.
4. Audit each person’s viewing rights
Camera access is separate from recording. In Home settings, inspect the people invited to the home and open each person’s camera permissions. Apple provides per-person controls; depending on the software and accessory, you can distinguish the ability to view live streams, view recordings, access video remotely, or manage cameras.
Use the narrowest permission that fits the person’s role. A resident who manages automations may need broader rights than a family member who only watches a live feed. After removing someone from the home, revisit every camera and confirm that their stream and recording access disappeared. Also check any access that the camera manufacturer’s own app may maintain; Apple Home permissions do not necessarily revoke a separate account in another app.

iCloud+ camera limits
Apple’s documented limits depend on the iCloud+ tier attached to the home:
| iCloud+ plan | HKSV cameras supported | Recorded activity window |
|---|---|---|
| 50 GB | 1 camera | Up to 10 days |
| 200 GB | Up to 5 cameras | Up to 10 days |
| 2 TB and above | Unlimited cameras | Up to 10 days |
The 10-day figure is an activity window, not a promise that a particular clip will remain available forever. Clips can be removed by the system or by a user, and a camera that is offline cannot create new footage. The limits are Apple product limits, not independent measurements of privacy or security.
Video summaries are a separate choice
For HKSV cameras, go to Home Settings → Apple Intelligence → Summarise Videos. Review the home-level setting and then the setting for each individual camera. Apple’s currently indexed support guidance says video summaries are off by default, while Reduced Notifications is on by default; availability and defaults can change with software updates, language, region and device capability.

Apple says ordinary camera activity analysis occurs on home devices. For an optional summary flow, relevant footage can be sent for further analysis through Private Cloud Compute, captions return to home devices, and the Private Cloud Compute data is permanently deleted. These are Apple’s stated design behaviors; they have not been independently audited in this guide. If summaries reveal more information than your household needs, leave summaries off while retaining ordinary motion notifications.
Control who belongs to the home
Residents, owners and guests are not equivalent
Review the people list under Home Settings before changing camera or lock settings. The person who created the home is the owner. Residents are invited household members who can receive local access and, when configured, remote access to home accessories. Guests are intended for narrower, often temporary access.
| Role | Typical access | Privacy implication |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Home-wide administration, people management and accessory controls | Can change camera, lock, history and sharing settings |
| Resident | Local access and optional remote access to home accessories | Can generally see the home’s security-related activity allowed by Apple Home |
| Guest | Selected doors, locks or security accessories, often local-only and scheduled | Does not receive resident-wide access and cannot view Activity History |
Exact labels and capabilities depend on the operating system, home hub and accessory. Remove former residents promptly, then inspect camera permissions and lock access separately. A person who no longer needs access should not remain in the home simply because their camera permission was turned off.
Give a guest temporary smart-lock access
Check the prerequisites first
- The lock must be compatible with Apple Home and support the guest feature you intend to use.
- Remote access and guest access require a configured home hub.
- Access-code support is optional; not every Home-compatible lock can create or manage codes in Apple Home.
- A guest may be restricted to selected doors or locks and a schedule rather than receiving access to every accessory.
Use the lock’s Manage Access screen
- Open the Home app and select the lock.
- Open Accessory Settings.
- Choose Manage Access.
- Review the guest or person listed, the selected locks, the schedule and any access code shown.
- Remove the guest, remove an individual lock, or delete the code when the access period ends.
The lock’s own Home controls are the source of truth. If Manage Access does not show code controls, do not assume that a code exists or that Apple Home can revoke one created in the lock’s separate app. For a cleaner handoff, give a cleaner, contractor or short-term occupant only the door needed, set an end time, and remove the person after the visit rather than leaving a permanent resident invitation.
Choose local-only access deliberately
Guests can be limited to local access on the home network and a schedule. This is narrower than resident access, which can include remote control. If a guest must unlock the door while away from the home, they may need resident-level access instead, which also broadens what they can reach. Decide whether convenience justifies that wider exposure.

Review the lock activity trail
- Open Home Settings → Activity.
- Turn on Activity History if you want the home to retain smart-accessory events.
- Filter or inspect events for locking, unlocking and other supported lock actions.
- Check the list while at home and again remotely if remote access is important.
Apple documents up to 30 days of smart-accessory Activity History. Owners and residents can view it; guests cannot. It is separate from camera recordings, so a lock event does not provide a video of the person at the door, and a camera clip does not automatically become a lock-history entry.
Activity History is useful but not guaranteed. Apple warns that an outage or an unreachable home hub can prevent events from being logged. Remote access is required to view the history while away from home. If you turn Activity History off, previous activity is permanently deleted; save any information your household legitimately needs before disabling it.
Decide whether names should appear in notifications
A member can turn off Attribution in their Home privacy controls. This can hide their name from arrival and departure notifications and from accessory-interaction notifications or history. It does not make the event disappear; it changes whether the person is identified by name.
Apple notes that members using Face Recognition may still see the person’s name. Treat attribution and face-recognition behavior as separate privacy decisions. If a household member wants anonymous event labels but another member relies on recognition, agree on the setting before assuming that names are hidden everywhere.

Practical privacy configurations
When you want an indoor camera quiet while people are home
- Set that camera’s Recording Options → When Home to stop recording or streaming, according to the choices the accessory exposes.
- Leave When Away enabled if you want coverage after everyone leaves.
- Check the home’s current occupancy status and the device locations that determine it.
- Review who can still view the camera; pausing recording does not revoke viewing rights.
When an exterior camera should remain active
Configure the exterior camera independently. Keep its When Home behavior enabled if the household wants entryway coverage, then narrow notifications by time, motion category or Home/Away state. Do not copy an indoor camera’s settings to every camera without checking placement and purpose.
When a family member moves out
- Remove the person under Home Settings.
- Inspect every camera’s person-level permissions.
- Open each supported lock’s Manage Access screen and delete guest access or codes.
- Review Activity History for recent lock events and retain only what your household policy permits.
- Check attribution and notification recipients so the former member is not still named or alerted.
When a contractor needs one scheduled visit
Use guest access to one selected lock, local-only if that is sufficient, with a schedule that ends after the appointment. If the lock supports a code, verify the code appears in Manage Access and remove it afterward. Do not share a resident invitation merely to avoid checking whether the lock supports temporary codes.
Troubleshoot the most common privacy surprises
The camera is still recording when someone is home
- Check whether the home actually switched to Home mode; device location determines the change.
- Confirm that you edited the intended camera and both Home and Away recording options.
- Verify that the camera supports the recording behavior you selected.
- Check whether another household member’s device location is keeping the home in Away mode.
A person can still see a camera
- Review that person’s camera permissions, including remote viewing, recordings and camera management.
- Confirm the person was removed from the Home people list, not merely hidden from notifications.
- Check the camera’s separate manufacturer account if it is also used outside Apple Home.
A guest’s lock code cannot be managed
- Open the lock’s own Accessory Settings and confirm whether Manage Access exposes codes.
- Check the model’s Home compatibility documentation; code support is not universal.
- If the code was created outside Apple Home, revoke it through the lock’s supported control path.
A lock event is missing
- Check whether the home hub was online when the event occurred.
- Consider power, network and accessory outages.
- Remember that Activity History is not camera footage and may not contain every physical interaction.
- If you are away, verify that remote access is configured before relying on remote history viewing.
A summary or name appears unexpectedly
- Review Home Settings → Apple Intelligence → Summarise Videos at both the home and camera levels.
- Check Reduced Notifications separately; its default can differ from summary recording.
- Review Attribution and Face Recognition settings when a person’s name appears in an event.
A repeatable review checklist
Run this review whenever you add a camera or lock, invite or remove a person, change an iCloud+ plan, install a major operating-system update, or notice an unexpected event.
Quick Recap
- List every camera and mark whether it supports HKSV, recording, motion categories and Home/Away controls.
- For each camera, inspect Activity Notifications, When Home, When Away and person-level access.
- Check the iCloud+ tier against the number of HKSV cameras and the documented 10-day activity window.
- Review video-summary and Reduced Notifications settings at the home and camera levels.
- Audit the Home people list and remove obsolete residents.
- For every supported lock, inspect Manage Access, selected doors, schedules and codes.
- Confirm that a home hub is online if remote or guest access is required.
- Review Activity History, remembering that it covers up to 30 days, excludes guests and is not camera footage.
- Decide whether Attribution and Face Recognition reveal names in the way your household expects.
- Document who is allowed to change these settings and repeat the audit after any access change.
