Reports describe an experimental, all-display device that could fold into a notebook and open into a large monitor, but its operating system, product family, price and schedule remain unsettled.
What Apple has officially confirmed
Apple’s Mac newsroom lists its current 2026 Mac releases, but contains no foldable MacBook announcement. There is no Apple product page, model number, price, technical specification or accessory-compatibility statement for the rumored device.
The information available comes from analyst notes and supply-chain reporting summarized by MacRumors, including its March 3, 2026 foldable-device guide. Those reports describe development activity, not a shipping product. Prototype work can still be cancelled or substantially redesigned.
The rumored design: one screen that folds into a notebook
All-display form factor
The leading concept uses one large OLED panel with no permanently attached physical keyboard. Folded in half, it would resemble a notebook; opened flat, it could function more like a portable monitor. The same hardware might be marketed as a Mac, an iPad or a hybrid, depending largely on the operating system Apple chooses.

Screen-size reports
| Reported size | What the report says | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 18.8 inches | Jeff Pu and later reporting describe an 18.8-inch foldable MacBook–iPad concept with touch input; MacRumors’ 2025–2026 coverage treats this as the main current target. | Unconfirmed target |
| 20.2 inches | Ming-Chi Kuo’s 2024 reporting mentioned a larger 20.2-inch panel; Mark Gurman has been associated with a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad forecast. | Earlier or alternate estimate |
These figures refer to the unfolded display diagonal. They do not establish the folded dimensions, aspect ratio, bezel size, thickness or weight.
Crease reduction is a central engineering goal
Kuo’s display description, reproduced by MacRumors, says Apple wants the fold to be “as crease-free as possible.” Achieving that would require costly display and hinge components. A crease that is less visible is not the same as a panel guaranteed to be completely flat or invisible at every angle.

How would you type on it?
Software keyboard is the most likely built-in method
Because the entire inner surface is expected to be a display, reports point to an on-screen keyboard, potentially with haptic feedback. That would preserve the large continuous panel but would not provide the fixed key travel or tactile layout of a conventional MacBook.
External keyboard and monitor use
The device could be used as a monitor with an external keyboard. This makes a keyboard, stand or USB-C hub plausible future accessory categories, but Apple has not confirmed compatibility with any existing Magic Keyboard, MacBook accessory or third-party product.

Would it be a MacBook or an iPad?
Analysts disagree because the hardware concept crosses Apple’s existing product lines:
| Possible identity | Evidence in reports | What would determine it |
|---|---|---|
| Foldable Mac | Jeff Pu described macOS support and touch input for an 18.8-inch MacBook–iPad hybrid. | Apple would need to ship macOS and position the product within the Mac family. |
| Foldable iPad | Mark Gurman and Omdia have described a large foldable iPad, with Gurman linked to a roughly 20-inch forecast. | iPadOS, iPad-style software limits and iPad branding would make it an iPad product. |
| Hybrid or new category | The all-screen notebook shape does not fit neatly into today’s MacBook or iPad designs. | Apple’s software, keyboard strategy and marketing—not the screen alone—would define the category. |
Until Apple identifies the operating system, calling it a “foldable MacBook” is shorthand rather than a confirmed product name.

Release-date forecasts have repeatedly slipped
No forecast below is an Apple commitment. The changing dates show how uncertain the display, hinge and manufacturing work remains.
| Source and timing | Forecast | Later development |
|---|---|---|
| Ross Young, earlier estimate | Foldable notebook in 2026 or 2027. | Superseded by later estimates. |
| Ming-Chi Kuo, earlier estimates | Initially late 2025 or early 2026. | Moved first to at least 2027 and later to 2028. |
| Jeff Pu, April 2025 | Q4 2026 mass production, with a launch in late 2026 or 2027 depending on production timing. | Not maintained in the August 2025 update. |
| Jeff Pu, August 2025 | The 18.8-inch device was “likely to be postponed” and no longer expected to enter Q4 2026 mass production, with a likely 2027 release discussed. | Indicates the prior production target had slipped. |
| Mark Gurman and March 2026 reporting | A roughly 20-inch foldable iPad was associated with 2028; the March 2026 guide also reported a delay to 2029. | Display cost and weight were cited as reasons for the later timing. |
Because the reports refer to different screen sizes, operating systems and product labels, their dates may not describe exactly the same configuration.

Price and production claims
Kuo’s 2024 estimate, as summarized by MacRumors, compared the possible price with Apple Vision Pro’s $3,499 starting price. That is an analyst comparison, not a rumored Apple price or a current specification. High-cost components intended to minimize the crease were identified as a reason the device could be unusually expensive.
The same 2024 reporting estimated more than one million shipments in 2026. That figure is a forecast made before later schedule revisions, and the report also warned that Apple might not take the project beyond prototypes. It should not be read as evidence that one million retail units will ship.
Specifications that remain unknown

- Folded thickness, total weight and whether the device folds inward or outward
- Hinge design, crease visibility over time and durability rating
- macOS, iPadOS or a new hybrid software experience
- Whether a physical keyboard is built in, detachable or omitted entirely

What the rumor means for buyers now
There is no current SKU to preorder and no honest compatibility list for accessories. If you need a laptop today, choose a shipping MacBook or iPad based on its confirmed keyboard and operating-system features rather than waiting for a date that Apple has not announced. Treat any listing claiming to sell an “Apple foldable MacBook” as unrelated or speculative unless it links to an official Apple announcement.
