Apple Financial Security: Which Settings Protect Your Money and What to Do if a Device Is Stolen

Protect financial information on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac by securing both the device and the Apple Account behind it. Use a strong device passcode or Mac login password, enable Apple Account two-factor authentication, keep software updated, and turn on Find My. On a supported iPhone, add Stolen Device Protection; then consider locking apps that expose banking messages or account codes. Apple Pay adds protections for card credentials, but it does not replace these steps.

Secure your Apple Account and device first

A device passcode or Mac login password helps prevent someone with physical access from opening your device. Pair it with Apple Account two-factor authentication (2FA), which adds a verification step when someone tries to sign in on a new device or browser. Keep your trusted phone numbers and account recovery details current so you can regain access if your usual device is unavailable.

  • Use a passcode or password that is difficult to guess, and do not share it.
  • Never share your Apple Account password, verification codes, or account security details. Apple Support states: “Never share your Apple Account password, verification codes or account security details with anyone.” Apple’s account security guidance also advises against sharing one Apple Account, including with family. Use Family Sharing and other sharing features instead.
  • Keep iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and your apps updated so you receive available security fixes.
  • Enable Find My before a device goes missing; it is central to locating, locking, or erasing a lost device.

Apple’s Apple Platform Security guide, dated August 2026, describes protections across Apple hardware, operating systems, apps, and services. Apple notes that not every feature or item of content is available in every country or region.

Turn on Stolen Device Protection on a supported iPhone

Stolen Device Protection adds checks for selected sensitive actions when an iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. It requires iOS 17.3 or later and must be enabled before the phone is lost. It is an extra layer, not a replacement for Find My.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Check the prerequisites and enable it

Apple requires Apple Account 2FA, a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Significant Locations with Location Services, and Find My. Once those are set up, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode on supported models), enter the passcode, and turn on Stolen Device Protection. You can choose to require the additional protections Always; otherwise, the default applies them when the iPhone is away from familiar locations. Find My must remain on while Stolen Device Protection is enabled. See Apple’s Stolen Device Protection instructions for the current setup details.

Know what changes away from familiar locations

For certain sensitive actions, the iPhone requires Face ID or Touch ID, with no passcode fallback. Examples include viewing saved passwords or passkeys and Safari payment methods, turning off Lost Mode, opening a locked app, erasing the device, and viewing Apple Card or Apple Cash virtual card numbers. Apple Pay purchases can still be authorized with the device passcode.

Some important account or security changes, such as changing the Apple Account password, use a Security Delay: authenticate once, wait an hour, then authenticate again. The additional checks can make legitimate changes less convenient, but they are intended to make it harder for a thief who knows the passcode to take over the account.

Understand what Apple Pay protects—and what it does not

When you add a card to Apple Pay, the card issuer creates a device-specific Device Account Number and sends it encrypted with data used to generate dynamic, transaction-specific security codes. The number is stored in the Secure Element on the device, cannot be decrypted by Apple, is not stored on Apple’s servers, and is not backed up to iCloud. In the payment flow Apple describes, the merchant receives the Device Account Number and transaction-specific code rather than the actual card number.

  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

For in-app and web purchases, Apple says the transaction is encrypted and then re-encrypted with a developer-specific key. Apple does not store the original card number, but it does retain some anonymous transaction information—such as the approximate amount, app or developer, approximate time, and whether the transaction succeeded—to improve its services. Wallet data such as passes and transaction information is encrypted in transit and stored encrypted on Apple’s servers. Read Apple’s Apple Pay security and privacy overview for the details.

These payment protections do not secure a compromised Apple Account, an unlocked device, your bank account, or a merchant login. Continue to protect those separately, and contact your card issuer if you see an unrecognized charge.

Lock apps that could reveal financial access

App locking can add a useful barrier if someone gets hold of an unlocked device or knows its passcode. Apple specifically points to Mail: messages may contain banking alerts or authentication codes that could help someone access financial or social accounts. Consider locking Mail and any sensitive financial or communications apps that offer the feature, while ensuring you can still reach the recovery information you need.

When Stolen Device Protection is enabled, opening a locked app away from familiar locations requires Face ID or Touch ID, with no passcode fallback. Apple’s guide to locked apps with Stolen Device Protection explains how the protections work.

If your iPhone or iPad is stolen, act quickly

  1. Mark it as lost. Go to iCloud.com/find as soon as possible and use Find Devices to mark the device as lost. Apple says you can sign in there to mark it lost without entering a verification code, even if the trusted device was stolen.
  2. Keep it in Find My. Do not remove the device from your account or Find My; removing it also removes Activation Lock, which can make it easier for someone else to use or resell.
  3. Do not engage with a suspected thief. Never share your passcode, password, or verification code with someone claiming to have found the device. Do not provide contact details in response to suspicious messages about its location, and do not try to recover it yourself from a map location.
  4. Review your account from another trusted device. Check the Apple Account device list, trusted email addresses and phone numbers, and recovery methods. If you find unfamiliar changes, change your Apple Account password.
  5. Erase only if recovery is unlikely. If you remotely erase an offline device, the erase starts the next time it comes online. On iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, Find My may still locate it after remote erase.
  6. Contact relevant authorities and providers. Notify your wireless carrier and local police as appropriate.

If Find My was not enabled before the theft, Apple says Lost Mode and remote erase are unavailable. Change your Apple Account password immediately and review account security details. Apple’s stolen iPhone and iPad guidance covers these response steps.

Consider a security key only if your threat model calls for it

Apple suggests considering a physical security key as additional Apple Account protection against targeted attacks. It is optional, not a substitute for 2FA, a device passcode, or recovery planning. Before choosing one, verify that it works with Apple Account security-key setup and your devices, and keep a compatible backup key in a safe place. The practical trade-off is stronger resistance to some account-targeting attacks in exchange for carrying and safeguarding the key.
