A federal jury found Apple liable to Taction Technology over haptic technology used in iPhones and Apple Watches. The verdict is not the end of the case: Apple says it will appeal, and post-trial proceedings could still change the outcome.
What the jury decided
On September 25, 2026, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California awarded San Diego-based Taction Technology more than $5.7 billion in damages. Reuters reported that the jury found Apple’s Taptic Engine infringed two Taction patents covering haptic feedback in iPhones and Apple Watches.

The jury found infringement but did not find that Apple acted willfully, according to Bloomberg Law and Reuters. That distinction matters: the verdict establishes the jury’s findings, but it does not by itself settle every issue in the case or make the award final.
What the Taptic Engine does—and which patents are at issue
The function people feel
Apple’s Taptic Engine produces the taps and vibration feedback users can feel during notifications, button presses, and other interface interactions. Taction’s case concerned vibration-based tactile-transducer technology; the dispute is about the technology behind that feedback, not a claim that every vibration feature or every Apple device was individually listed as infringing.

The patents
Bloomberg Law identified the patents at issue as U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117. Taction alleged that Apple used the patented technology without authorization. The reports do not provide a complete model-by-model list of products found to infringe, so the verdict should not be read as establishing that every iPhone or Apple Watch generation is covered.
How the case reached a jury verdict
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2021 | Taction filed its lawsuit against Apple, according to Reuters and Bloomberg Law. |
| 2023 | A district-court ruling initially favored Apple, according to Bloomberg Law and TechRepublic. |
| August 2025 | The Federal Circuit vacated the earlier judgment. TechRepublic reported that the appeal involved errors concerning excluded expert testimony and interpretation of the patent claims. |
| September 14, 2026 | The jury trial began, according to TechRepublic. |
| September 25, 2026 | The jury returned its verdict for Taction, Reuters and TechRepublic reported. |
The Federal Circuit’s 2025 action meant the earlier district-court outcome did not end the dispute; the case proceeded to trial. The current jury verdict is therefore a later stage in a lawsuit that has already involved appellate review.

What Apple and Taction said
Apple disputed that its product used Taction’s technology. The company said: “Apple’s Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology, which Taction’s own testing of Apple’s products confirmed during trial.” Apple also said: “Apple does not use Taction’s technology, and we will appeal.”

Taction attorney Lance Yang said: “We’re happy the jury found for Taction and vindicated its patent rights.” Those statements reflect the parties’ positions; the jury’s infringement finding is the decision reached at trial.

What this means for iPhone and Apple Watch owners
For owners, the reported impact is currently legal and financial rather than an announced device change. The reports reviewed do not describe a recall, a required software update, or an immediate action for iPhone or Apple Watch users. They also do not establish a complete list of affected models.
The case could still lead to different outcomes as it proceeds through post-trial motions and appeal: the award could be upheld, reduced, or vacated, or the parties could reach a settlement or licensing arrangement. Any product or service changes would depend on later developments; no such court-ordered remedy has been announced in the reporting cited here.
