What John Ternus has—and has not—committed Apple to
Seoul Economic Daily reported on October 16, 2026, that Apple CEO John Ternus signaled openness to Chinese-made memory in a TIME interview. The report attributed to Ternus a description of the memory constraints as an “absolute crisis” and said all options remained available. The underlying TIME interview or transcript was not available for independent checking, so that wording should be treated as a reported characterization rather than a verified direct quotation.

The report does not establish that Apple has selected a Chinese DRAM supplier, signed a purchase agreement or approved Chinese memory for every iPhone and Mac. It indicates that Apple is considering another source while supply is unusually tight.
Evidence Apple is testing Chinese memory
MacRumors reported on July 8, 2026, that Apple had begun testing Chinese memory chips. That report linked the testing to the DRAM squeeze and described a possible China-market routing strategy, rather than a confirmed global deployment.

Testing is an engineering and supply-chain step, not proof that a chip will ship in a retail product. Apple would still need to complete qualification, validate firmware and system compatibility, and decide where any approved component could be used. No cited report identifies the Chinese manufacturer, the memory-generation specification, affected models or a production start date.
Why DRAM availability has become an Apple problem
DRAM is the working memory used by phones and computers while their processors run apps and operating-system tasks. A device needs memory that meets electrical, thermal, reliability and software requirements, and manufacturers must secure enough volume for production.

Apple’s Q3 fiscal 2026 earnings-call transcript said that “primarily the DRAM market has three suppliers.” That concentration leaves large buyers exposed when demand rises faster than suppliers can add output or when suppliers allocate capacity to other customers.
The same call described demand as an additional pressure. The transcript said: “It’s a demand forecast issue, to be candid, where the iPhone and the Mac are both doing remarkably better than we thought they would do.” The statement ties the shortage discussion to stronger-than-expected Apple demand, not simply to a technical defect or a single factory disruption.

Could Chinese DRAM appear in every iPhone and Mac?
There is no evidence for that conclusion. The available reporting supports a narrower possibility: Apple is evaluating Chinese memory as one contingency during a supply crunch. A component can be tested for one product, one factory or one sales region without being approved for the entire lineup.
Regional allocation would also allow Apple to respond differently to local regulatory and supply conditions. The July report’s China-market possibility should therefore not be read as proof that iPhones and Macs sold elsewhere will contain the same memory source.

Chinese origin alone does not establish that a device would be less reliable. The relevant question is whether a specific memory part passes Apple’s validation and production controls. Because no test results or qualification decision has been published, consumers cannot infer a reliability change from the sourcing reports.
