For a simple payment between people you know, the cheapest option depends on how you fund it and how you move the money afterward. Zelle is typically free for consumer transfers, Apple Cash charges for instant cash-outs but lists no fee for a standard bank transfer, Cash App is free to send from most funding sources except a credit card, and Venmo fees depend on the payment type. The bigger difference is recourse: a payment you approve can be difficult or impossible to recover, while Venmo’s purchase protection applies only to eligible purchases. This comparison is for the United States; provider terms, eligibility, and bank-specific limits can change.

Fees: sending money is not the same as cashing out

Compare the exact route you plan to use. A free peer-to-peer payment does not necessarily mean that moving a balance to a bank or paying a merchant is free.

Service Peer-to-peer sending Moving money out or purchase-related fee
Apple Cash Apple’s terms say there is no Apple fee for funding a peer-to-peer transfer with a supported payment card. A card issuer may charge its own fee. Apple Cash terms Apple lists an Instant Transfer fee of 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum, to an eligible debit card. A standard bank transfer is the alternative without that listed Instant Transfer fee. Apple Support
Zelle Consumer transfers typically have no fee, but check with your bank or credit union. Zelle reports that 99.40% of linked consumer checking and savings accounts in a Q1 2026 survey of participating financial institutions did not charge a fee to send, receive, or request money; that survey result is not a guarantee for an individual account. Zelle support · Zelle Help Center Zelle transfers directly between eligible bank accounts; the cited consumer materials do not state a separate cash-out fee.
Venmo Fees vary by payment method and transaction type. A credit-card issuer may also charge a cash-advance fee when you use a card to send money. Venmo User Agreement For eligible goods-and-services or business-profile transactions, Venmo’s Purchase Protection page states a 2.99% seller transaction fee. Buyers pay no separate fee for eligible protection. Venmo Purchase Protection
Cash App Cash App says peer-to-peer sending is free unless you choose a credit card; the applicable fee is shown before that transaction. Cash App U.S. Terms The cited terms do not establish one fee for every cash-out route; check the fee displayed for the transfer you select.

For Apple Cash, Instant Transfer typically posts immediately but can take up to 30 minutes, and security checks may take longer, according to Apple Support. Choose the standard bank-transfer route if avoiding the listed instant-transfer charge matters more than speed.

Limits: Apple Cash publishes figures; the others depend on your account

Service Published limits or how to find yours
Apple Cash For registered accounts, Apple lists a balance cap of $20,000; peer-to-peer sending and receiving of $1–$10,000 per transaction and $10,000 per rolling seven-day period; and bank transfers of $1–$10,000 per transfer and $20,000 per seven-day period. These are published limits, not guaranteed approvals: Green Dot may apply additional security limits or delay transactions. Unverified accounts face additional restrictions, including a $500 aggregate send/receive threshold. Apple Cash Family and Tap to Cash have lower limits. Apple’s limits · Green Dot Bank terms
Zelle Zelle does not publish one universal consumer maximum in its reviewed FAQ. Your bank or credit union sets the applicable limit, so look in its app or ask the institution. Zelle FAQ
Venmo Venmo may impose limits at its discretion and directs customers to separate limit information for personal, business, and charity profiles. Check the limit shown for your account and profile rather than relying on a single figure. Venmo User Agreement
Cash App Cash App does not state one peer-to-peer maximum for every account in its cited U.S. terms. It may require additional identity information above account thresholds and may set or adjust limits over different periods. Cash App U.S. Terms

Apple Cash is provided by Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC; Apple Payments Services LLC is a service provider, not a bank. Standard-account sending and receiving requires a U.S. resident aged 18 or older, an eligible Apple device with Wallet, and account registration. Apple Cash is available in the 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico; Family accounts have separate rules. Apple Cash terms

Speed and whether you can cancel a payment

Zelle: fast, but enrolled-recipient payments are final

A payment to an enrolled Zelle recipient typically arrives within minutes. Once sent to an enrolled recipient, it cannot be canceled or reversed. Confirm the recipient and amount before approving the transfer. Zelle Help Center

Cash App: processing may begin immediately

Cash App says a payment may begin processing immediately and that it is not required to stop, cancel, or recover a misdirected payment. If the recipient has not claimed a payment, the terms say it is canceled after 15 days. Cash App U.S. Terms

Apple Cash: allow for transfer processing

Apple’s stated timing of immediately to up to 30 minutes applies to an Instant Transfer cash-out, not a promise that every peer-to-peer payment can be recalled. Check the transaction in Wallet and contact Apple Cash support promptly if something is wrong. Apple Support · Apple transaction-issue guidance

Venmo: verify the transaction before sending

The cited Venmo materials do not provide a universal cancellation window for peer-to-peer payments. Do not assume you can reverse a payment after sending; consult Venmo’s current account guidance if a transaction is already in progress.

Protection depends on what happened—and what kind of payment you made

Unauthorized activity is different from an authorized scam

An unauthorized payment is one made without your involvement, such as by someone who accessed your account. An authorized scam payment is one you approved yourself after being deceived. Zelle says unauthorized payments typically qualify for reimbursement after the customer reports them to their bank or credit union; certain qualifying imposter scams may also be eligible. Recovery is not assured, and the bank investigates the circumstances. Contact your financial institution promptly. Zelle fraud guidance · Zelle security

For an unrecognized Apple Cash payment, Apple directs customers to check who could access the account, secure the Apple Account, and contact a Green Dot Apple Cash specialist. Apple Cash’s limited-liability provisions for registered balance activity do not apply to money loaded with a supported payment card or to the portion of a peer-to-peer transfer funded by that card. Apple Cash terms · Apple transaction-issue guidance

Cash App’s warning that scam losses may have no recourse should not be read as saying every unauthorized transaction is excluded from protection: its terms separately address errors and unauthorized transactions. Report an unrecognized transaction through the applicable Cash App process and review the current terms. Cash App U.S. Terms

Buying goods: Venmo protection is conditional

Venmo Purchase Protection may cover qualifying transactions, such as certain in-app or QR-code purchases, eligible debit-card transactions, business-profile payments, and payments explicitly processed as goods and services. Examples of covered problems may include an item that never arrives, arrives damaged, or is materially different from its listing. Ordinary personal payments are not covered merely because they were used to buy something. The program also excludes categories including donations, vehicles, real estate, and financial products. Check the eligibility rules before paying. Venmo Purchase Protection

Zelle does not offer purchase protection for authorized payments when an item is not received or differs from what was expected. That makes it a poor choice for paying an unfamiliar seller. Zelle security

Which service fits your situation?

  • Choose Zelle for a trusted person when you want money to move directly through participating banks. Confirm your institution’s fee and limit first, and do not use it as a substitute for a protected checkout with an unfamiliar seller.
  • Choose Apple Cash when both people use eligible Apple accounts and you want the option of keeping or transferring the balance. A standard bank transfer avoids Apple’s listed Instant Transfer fee; the published limits apply to registered accounts and can be subject to added security checks.
  • Choose Venmo for a purchase only when the payment clearly qualifies for Purchase Protection. Use the eligible purchase flow rather than an ordinary friend-to-friend payment, and check the terms for exclusions.
  • Choose Cash App for a personal transfer when its funding options suit you. Avoid credit-card funding if you do not want the transaction-specific fee, and verify the recipient because a misdirected payment may be difficult to recover.

Before sending through any of these services, verify the recipient, amount, and payment purpose. For a purchase from someone you do not know, use a payment method or checkout process that explicitly provides applicable buyer protection instead of assuming a person-to-person transfer can be disputed like a credit-card purchase.
