Apple Cash Users Face a November 9 Verification Requirement—and a Possible New Funding Option

Starting November 9, 2026, Apple Cash users who have not verified their identity will be unable to reload their balance with a supported payment card in certain circumstances. Apple’s reported notice also mentions a possible way for banks, merchants, or other third parties to send funds directly to Apple Cash—but Green Dot Bank has not announced when, or whether, that option will be enabled.

What Apple Cash users should know now

Green Dot Bank’s Apple Cash terms, effective October 1, 2026, set November 9 as the start date for the specified reload restriction. Apple’s reported device path for starting verification is Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Cash. Green Dot Bank provides Apple Cash; Apple supplies the Wallet interface and support information. Apple Cash is available only in the United States on eligible devices, according to Apple Support.

The two changes have different statuses: the identity-verification requirement has a date, while direct funding is only a future possibility in Green Dot’s terms. Apple’s notice also flagged an arbitration-section change, but the reporting does not specify exactly what text changed.

Item Status and timing What it means for users
Identity verification for certain reloads Scheduled to begin November 9, 2026 Verify identity if you want to keep reloading in the circumstances covered by the terms.
Funding initiated by a bank, merchant, or other third party May be enabled in the future; no date announced Do not assume this way to add funds is available now.
Arbitration section Flagged in Apple’s notice; the specific amendment is not detailed in the reporting Read the current terms if you want to understand the provisions that apply to your account.

Identity verification will affect certain Apple Cash reloads

From November 9, an account without verified identity cannot load its Apple Cash balance with a supported payment card in the circumstances specified by Green Dot Bank’s Apple Cash Terms and Conditions: after the account has received a peer-to-peer transfer or added money with a supported card. The terms do not establish that every Apple Cash transaction or every method of receiving money will be blocked.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.

Verification is not new to Apple Cash. Apple Support says users may already be asked to verify their identity when using the service. The upcoming date introduces a stated requirement affecting certain balance reloads; it is not the first use of identity checks.

How to start verification

  1. On your device, open Settings.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Apple Cash and follow the identity-verification prompts, if shown.

The path above is the one attributed to Apple in the notice reported by 9to5Mac. Apple’s notice says users can begin verification at any time from their device.

Direct bank or merchant funding is not a confirmed launch

Green Dot’s terms describe an “Externally-Initiated Funding Transaction” as a transfer to an Apple Cash balance via a merchant, another financial institution, or another third party, when Green Dot makes the feature available. Apple’s reported notice says Green Dot may enable these transactions in the future, subject to certain limits. It gives no start date and does not say the feature is live.

For now, treat direct outside funding as a potential capability in the terms, not a new way you can count on to add money. The notice does not provide the limits or explain which banks or merchants would participate.

Apple also flagged an arbitration-section change

Apple’s notice encouraged users to review their rights and dispute process and called attention to an update to the arbitration section. The current Green Dot terms state that claims must be arbitrated and class actions are prohibited. However, the reporting does not describe the specific amendment or establish how the prior version differed. Read the current terms for the language that applies; the available account of the notice is not enough to draw conclusions about the legal effect of the update.

Keep Apple Cash distinct from Apple Card

These changes concern Apple Cash, not Apple Card. Apple Support identifies Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC, as the provider of Apple Cash. The Apple Cash Card is virtual: Green Dot’s terms say users will not be issued a physical card.
