Apple Arcade vs. Buying Indie Games Individually on the App Store: Which Is Better?

Apple Arcade is usually the better fit when you expect to play several games, want one predictable bill, prefer games without ads or in-app purchases, or will share with family. Buying indie games one at a time is usually the better fit when you already have a short list of specific titles and do not want access to depend on an ongoing subscription. There is no honest universal break-even number: the answer depends on the exact games, their current prices, your region, the devices you use, and how long you expect to keep playing.

Apple’s listed U.S. rates are $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Twelve monthly payments total $83.88, so the annual option is $33.89 lower at those listed rates. Prices, catalog membership, promotions, and availability can vary by country and change over time.

Quick comparison

Question Apple Arcade Individual App Store purchases
What you pay for Access to the available Arcade catalog while the subscription is active A separate transaction for each title; check that game’s current listing and store terms
U.S. price example $6.99 monthly or $49.99 annually, according to Apple’s listed rates Title-specific prices were not established by the cited Apple pages
Ads and in-app purchases Apple says Arcade games have neither Varies by game; inspect each listing
Family use Share with up to five family members at no additional cost, under Apple’s Family Sharing setup Sharing treatment depends on the individual purchase and applicable settings
After cancellation Downloaded Arcade games cannot be played after the subscription is canceled Access follows that title’s own transaction and store terms rather than the Arcade subscription
Supported hardware Apple lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Vision Pro; verify each game Depends on the individual game’s listing and device compatibility

The practical test is simple: write down the games you would actually play, check their current listings, and compare that total with the period for which you would keep Arcade. Do not substitute an invented “average indie game price” for the titles you want.

What Apple Arcade actually provides

Apple describes Arcade as a game subscription service offering unlimited access to hundreds of premium games. That wording means access to the service’s available catalog, not ownership of every game and not a promise that every title can also be purchased separately.

Catalog access, not a blanket purchase

Once subscribed, you can download available Arcade games without an additional charge for each download. The catalog is the boundary of the benefit: a game must be available through Arcade, and Apple can change the catalog. If a particular indie title is the reason you are considering a subscription, look it up in the current Arcade catalog before paying.

One subscription, several Apple devices

Apple lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Vision Pro as supported platforms for Arcade. That does not mean every game runs on every listed device. Open the individual game page and confirm the exact device, operating-system version, and input support before assuming you can move a game between screens.

Online and offline play

Apple says Arcade games can be played online or offline. You still need to download the game and meet any device or account requirements first. Offline support is a service claim, not a guarantee that every title behaves identically without a connection, so check the game’s own information if offline use is central to your decision.

What buying an indie game individually means

Buying outside Arcade is a title-by-title decision. Apple Support says people who do not subscribe can still buy and download other games through the Apple Games app or the App Store. The cited pages do not establish that every Arcade title is offered as a separate purchase, so inspect the listing for the exact game you want.

A specific game can outweigh the subscription question

If one or two named games are your priority, start with those listings rather than with the subscription price. A title may be unavailable in Arcade, may support only some of your devices, or may have a business model you do not want. In that situation, the individual listing—not a general Arcade feature—decides the purchase.

Individual monetization is title-specific

Apple’s no-ads, no-in-app-purchases statement applies to Arcade games. It should not be extended to individually purchased games as a group. Some paid games may have optional purchases, advertising, subscriptions, or none of those; read the current App Store description and the purchase disclosures for each title.

Cost: compare your play plan, not an imaginary average

Apple’s listed U.S. rates

Billing choice Listed rate Cost over 12 months at that rate
Monthly $6.99 per month $83.88
Annual $49.99 per year $49.99 for the listed year

The arithmetic difference between twelve $6.99 payments and one $49.99 annual payment is $33.89. These are U.S. prices shown by Apple and can change. Your storefront may show a different currency, tax treatment, price, annual option, or promotion.

Why there is no universal break-even count

The supplied Apple pages do not provide a defensible typical price for indie games, and individual prices change by title, region, discount, and edition. Therefore, saying that Arcade “pays for itself after” a fixed number of games would be misleading.

Use this calculation instead:

  1. List the exact games you expect to play during the period under consideration.
  2. Open each current App Store or Apple Games listing and record its displayed price, edition, device support, and monetization notes.
  3. Add the prices only for games you would genuinely buy. Do not count games you would download merely because they are available.
  4. Compare that total with the Arcade price for the same period: monthly payments if you expect a short or uncertain period, or the listed annual rate if you expect to keep the service for a full year.
  5. Run the calculation again for each household player if Family Sharing would be used.

This method also exposes a common trap: a subscription can look inexpensive when compared with an entire catalog, yet be poor value for someone who will play only one game for a weekend.

Access after payment stops

Arcade cancellation ends play access

Apple Support says that after you cancel, Arcade games cannot be played even if they remain downloaded. Downloading a game therefore does not turn subscription access into an owned copy. If keeping access after a planned cancellation matters, treat this as a decisive difference rather than a minor billing detail.

An individual purchase follows its own terms

A separately purchased title is a distinct App Store transaction, not an Arcade entitlement. Its access, compatibility, and any restrictions are governed by that game’s listing and applicable store terms. Confirm those terms for the exact title; do not assume that an Arcade edition and a separately listed edition are interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ads and in-app purchases

Apple says Arcade games have no ads or in-app purchases. That gives the subscription a consistent monetization promise across the Arcade service, although the game’s design and content can still differ from title to title.

Individually purchased games require a game-by-game check. A paid download does not, by itself, tell you whether a title contains advertising, optional purchases, consumable items, a subscription, or no additional monetization. Read the listing, especially if a child will play or if you want a one-time-payment experience.

Family Sharing and household value

Apple says an Arcade subscription can be shared with up to five family members at no additional cost through Family Sharing. That can substantially reduce the effective cost per player when several people in the same household will use the catalog.

Do not assume the same sharing treatment for every individual game purchase. Check the applicable Family Sharing settings and the title’s store information. Household value also depends on whether family members want different games, whether those games are currently in Arcade, and whether everyone uses compatible devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Devices, controllers, and compatibility checks

Verify the exact device before subscribing for one title

Apple’s platform list is broad, but platform availability is not identical to universal compatibility. A Mac listing, an Apple TV listing, and an iPhone listing can represent different supported versions or input requirements. Check the game page for your hardware before treating it as a reason to choose Arcade.

Controllers are optional

Apple says a controller can be connected and that many Arcade games support one. Look for the controller icon on the game’s App Store page. A controller is an optional accessory and not a requirement to subscribe or play; support is title-dependent.

Check storage and operating-system requirements

Before downloading several games, confirm available storage and the required operating-system version on each device. A catalog subscription removes the per-download charge for eligible Arcade games, but it does not remove storage, installation, update, or hardware requirements.

Promotions, Apple One, and introductory offers

Apple’s Arcade page mentions eligible-device offers and Apple One bundles. These details are volatile: eligibility, duration, renewal price, included services, and cancellation rules can change. Verify the offer shown in your account and country before using it in a comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When evaluating a promotion, separate the introductory period from the price that applies afterward. Record the renewal date, the post-promotion rate, and whether the offer requires a new device, a new subscriber status, or an Apple One plan. A temporary discount should not be compared with a full-price annual purchase without labeling the difference.

Which choice fits which player?

Choose Arcade when you want variety

  • You expect to try several games rather than replay one specific title.
  • You value a single subscription covering the currently available Arcade catalog.
  • You want Apple’s no-ads and no-in-app-purchases promise for Arcade games.
  • Several family members will use the service and can share it under Apple’s stated limit.
  • You want the option to play across supported Apple devices and offline where the game supports it.

Buy individually when your list is short

  • You already know the one or two games you want.
  • The games are not in the current Arcade catalog, or their individual listings better match your device needs.
  • You do not want to keep paying to retain access to Arcade games.
  • You are comfortable checking monetization and compatibility title by title.
  • Your expected play period is too short or uncertain to justify an ongoing subscription.

Use a mixed strategy only when the math is clear

A mixed approach can make sense if a specific game must be bought separately while Arcade supplies variety for the rest of the household. Treat the two costs independently. Do not count an individually purchased title as part of the Arcade value, and do not assume canceling Arcade changes the rights attached to the separate transaction.

A step-by-step decision process

1. Name the games

Write down the titles you can realistically play, not a wish list of every interesting game. Include the person who will play each title and the device they will use.

2. Confirm availability and edition

Search each title in the Apple Games app or App Store. Mark whether it is in Arcade, listed separately, available in your country, and offered for your intended device. If the result is unclear, the title is not a safe reason to subscribe until its listing is confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Record the current purchase terms

For individually listed games, note the displayed price and any in-app-purchase or advertising disclosures. Prices from another country, an old screenshot, or a different edition do not belong in your calculation.

4. Choose a time horizon

Use one month if you are testing the catalog, several months if you have a defined project or holiday period, or one year if you expect continuous use. Compare the same horizon for both options.

5. Add the household effect

For Arcade, include up to five family members covered at no additional subscription charge under Apple’s stated Family Sharing terms. For individual purchases, verify the relevant sharing treatment instead of assuming every title behaves the same way.

6. Check the exit condition

If you may cancel, remember that downloaded Arcade games stop being playable after cancellation. Decide whether that loss of access conflicts with your plan before choosing an annual commitment or building a long-term library around Arcade downloads.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating the catalog as ownership

Arcade provides access to an available catalog while subscribed. Keep that distinction visible when budgeting, especially if you expect to cancel later.

Mistake: applying the no-ads promise to all paid games

That promise is Apple’s description of Arcade games. Inspect each individually purchased game instead of inferring its monetization model from its price.

Mistake: using U.S. pricing in another country

The $6.99 and $49.99 figures are U.S. examples. Use the storefront for the country where the Apple account will be billed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming every Arcade game is sold separately

The cited support pages say non-subscribers can buy other games, but they do not say every Arcade title has an individual purchase option. Check the exact listing.

Mistake: counting every download as value

Catalog size matters only when you will play the games. A smaller list of titles you truly want can beat a larger catalog you never open.

Mistake: overlooking family and device constraints

A household may get strong value from one shareable subscription, while a single-player household on one unsupported device may not. Verify both factors before relying on a headline price.

Worked decision examples

One specific game for a short period

Start with that game’s individual listing. If it is available for your device and its terms suit you, a separate purchase avoids paying for catalog access you will not use. The exact price must come from the current listing; the cited Apple pages do not establish it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several games over a full year

Compare the total of the specific individual listings with the listed U.S. annual Arcade price of $49.99, while also considering whether those games are actually in the catalog and whether you value the no-ads, no-in-app-purchases experience. If the games are not in Arcade, the subscription cannot replace those purchases.

Two or more family players

Check whether each player’s desired games are in Arcade and whether their devices are supported. Sharing with up to five family members can improve the subscription’s household value, but it does not make unavailable or incompatible titles playable.

A player who may cancel soon

Focus on the exit condition first. Arcade games cannot be played after cancellation even when downloaded. If continued access to a particular title matters, inspect whether that title has a separate listing and what terms apply.

Bottom-line decision rule

Choose Apple Arcade when the subscription’s catalog, clean monetization promise, device coverage, and family sharing match the way you will actually play. Choose individual purchases when your desired list is short, title-specific, or likely to outlast your willingness to keep a subscription. The most reliable comparison is not “subscription versus indie games” in the abstract; it is your current Arcade catalog, your exact title list, your local prices, your devices, your household, and your planned cancellation date.
