What Apple Arcade does on Apple TV 4K
Apple Arcade is a subscription game catalog available directly on Apple TV 4K. Open the Arcade app, or open the App Store and select the Arcade tab, to browse categories, view popular titles, search for a game, and download it to the Apple TV.
The Apple TV version is not a separate service tier. You need an active Apple Arcade subscription, and games included with that subscription do not require additional purchases inside the game. A title still has to be offered for Apple TV and be compatible with the Apple TV’s hardware and tvOS version.

Availability is not identical across Apple devices. Apple says game availability can vary by hardware and software compatibility, and features or content can differ by country or region. A game that appears in Arcade on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac may therefore be unavailable on your Apple TV 4K.
Do you need a controller?
Not always. Some Apple Arcade games accept the Siri Remote, while others need a dedicated game controller. Apple’s support guidance is explicit that “some games on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD require a controller to play.”
Apple’s tvOS developer documentation requires games to support either the Siri Remote or an MFi game controller. In practice, the game’s own App Store or Arcade listing is the authority: a controller icon indicates controller support for that Apple device, and a Game Controller Required badge means the title cannot be played with the Siri Remote alone.

Supported controllers for Apple TV 4K
Apple lists these controller families for Apple TV 4K:
| Controller | What the listing establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sony DualShock 4 | Supported for Apple TV gaming when connected wirelessly. | Individual games still determine whether a controller is optional or mandatory. |
| Sony DualSense | Supported for Apple TV gaming. | Check the game listing for Apple TV compatibility and controller requirements. |
| Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth | Supported when using a Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller. | Older Xbox controllers without Bluetooth are not covered by this support statement. |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Listed by Apple as supported. | Game-specific button support and multiplayer capacity still apply. |
| Xbox Adaptive Controllers | Listed by Apple as supported. | Compatibility with a particular game’s control scheme remains title-specific. |
| MFi-compatible game controllers | Apple’s Made for iPhone/iPad controller category is supported. | Use the controller’s compatibility information and the game’s Apple TV listing together. |
The phrase “supported controller” means Apple TV can pair and use that controller category; it does not guarantee that every game exposes every button, motion feature, or accessibility option. Apple TV can create controller profiles, remap controls, customize controls by app, and use Buddy Controller after a compatible controller is connected.
How to check a game before downloading it
- Open the Arcade app or App Store. On the App Store, select the Arcade tab. In Arcade, browse a category or popularity list, or search for the title.
- Open the game’s product page. Do not rely on a listing you saw for another Apple device.
- Look for the controller icon. This indicates controller support for that Apple device.
- Look for “Game Controller Required.” If that badge appears, plan to pair a compatible controller before launching the game.
- Confirm Apple TV availability. The game must list Apple TV compatibility; an iPhone or iPad listing alone is not enough.
- Check multiplayer information in the listing. The Apple TV connection limit is four controllers, but a game may support fewer players or require a specific input arrangement.
- Download only after checking those indicators. This avoids installing a title that cannot be controlled with the hardware you have.
Pairing a controller with Apple TV 4K
Use a Bluetooth-capable controller from Apple’s supported list. The exact wording of menus can vary with the tvOS release, but the process follows this sequence:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Charge the controller and put it into its Bluetooth pairing mode according to the controller maker’s instructions.
- On Apple TV, open Settings, then go to Remotes and Devices and Bluetooth.
- Select the controller when it appears in the nearby-device list and complete pairing.
- Return to the Arcade app, open the game, and test the controls before starting a multiplayer session.
- If more than one person will play, pair the additional controllers one at a time and assign profiles if prompted.
After pairing, Apple TV provides controller-management options that include profiles, button remapping, and per-app control customization. These settings are useful when a game’s default layout is uncomfortable or when different household members use different configurations.
What the Siri Remote can and cannot do
The Siri Remote is sufficient for games that explicitly support it. Such games are generally designed around its touch surface, directional input, buttons, or motion capabilities. If a title has a controller-required badge, the remote is not a substitute.
A game can also support both input methods without making the external controller mandatory. In that case, the remote may work for basic play while a DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox controller, or another compatible pad provides more conventional controls. The listing’s icon and badge are more reliable than the game’s genre or screenshots when deciding which input is expected.
Keep the remote connected even when using a gamepad: Apple TV supports one Siri Remote in addition to the four-controller limit. The remote remains useful for navigating tvOS, opening apps, and changing system settings.

Multiplayer limits and Buddy Controller
Apple documents a maximum of four game controllers connected to Apple TV at one time, plus one Siri Remote. That is a hardware connection limit, not a promise that every game supports four simultaneous players. A particular title may allow only two players, require one controller per player, or use a different multiplayer model.
Buddy Controller combines two compatible controllers so they act as one player. This can let two people share control of a single character, help a player who needs assistance, or make a difficult game more accessible. Apple describes the feature as combining two controllers to play games on Apple TV 4K as a single player.
Because Buddy Controller is an input-combination feature rather than a game mode, it does not increase the number of independent players. If a title supports two players, combining two pads into one Buddy Controller pair still leaves one independent player slot available.
Subscription, downloads, and in-game costs
Apple Arcade games can be downloaded and played without additional purchases inside the Apple Arcade subscription. An active subscription is required to retain access. The no-extra-purchase rule applies to games included in the subscription; it does not make a title available on Apple TV if that title is not offered for the device.

Common problems and practical fixes
The game will not respond to the Siri Remote
Open the title’s Arcade or App Store page and look for Game Controller Required. If that badge is present, pair one of Apple’s listed controllers. If no badge appears but controls remain unclear, Apple directs users to contact the app’s developer for title-specific guidance.
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
Confirm that the controller is charged, in pairing mode, and not actively connected to another device. Return to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth, wait for the controller name to appear, and select it. If an old entry is shown but the controller will not reconnect, remove or forget that pairing and repeat the pairing process.
The game is visible on another Apple device but missing on Apple TV
Check the Apple TV listing rather than searching by the title alone. Apple says availability varies with hardware and software compatibility and may differ by country or region. A missing Apple TV version is a catalog or compatibility limitation, not necessarily a problem with your subscription.
Only some buttons work
Review the game’s controller requirements and Apple TV’s control-customization options. A controller can be supported by tvOS while a particular game uses only a subset of its buttons or lacks support for a specialized feature. If the game’s controls or rules are not documented clearly, contact its developer.
Four people cannot join the same game
Apple TV’s four-controller maximum does not override the game’s own player limit. Check the title’s multiplayer information, then pair only the number of controllers that the game supports. Buddy Controller is intended for two controllers acting as one player, not for adding another independent player.
Choosing the right setup
- Choose the Siri Remote alone if every game you plan to play shows Siri Remote support and none carries the controller-required badge.
- Add one Bluetooth gamepad if you play action, racing, platform, or other titles that need dual-stick or conventional button controls.
- Choose DualSense or DualShock 4 if you already own one and want an Apple-listed PlayStation controller option.
- Choose an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth if you prefer that layout, making sure the specific controller is Bluetooth-capable.
- Consider an Xbox Adaptive Controller when its accessibility-oriented configuration fits your needs and the game supports the resulting inputs.
- Use Buddy Controller when two people need to share control of one player rather than occupy separate player slots.
The safest purchase decision is driven by the individual games you intend to play: verify Apple TV availability, inspect the controller icon and required-controller badge, then match the controller to the number of players and the control features those titles actually use.
