AirPods 5 add active noise cancellation (ANC) without silicone ear tips, making them an appealing option if you want an open fit but some help quieting background noise. They are not a sealed substitute for AirPods Pro: voices and other environmental sounds can still get through, fit varies from ear to ear, and Apple’s ANC-on estimates are only up to four or five hours per charge, depending on the case model.
What’s new about AirPods 5?
Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, bringing ANC to its open-ear, tip-free design. Apple also highlights a new multiport acoustic architecture, next-generation Adaptive EQ, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Siri integration and Live Translation. The feature set is substantial for an open-fit earbud, but the defining question is whether you want ANC without an ear-tip seal.

Apple says AirPods 5 reduce up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement or a promise of equivalent isolation to sealed earbuds. Reviewers describe improved handling of low-level background noise, while noting that the open fit still lets some sounds through. Apple’s announcement provides the claim and launch context.
How well does ANC work with an open fit?
ANC can reduce some surrounding noise, but an open earbud does not passively block the ear canal in the way a silicone-tipped model can. T3’s reviewer could hear train announcements with ANC enabled, illustrating a practical limit: AirPods 5 may make a noisy environment less intrusive without making it quiet. No controlled third-party percentage for their noise reduction is established by the cited reviews.

That trade-off is useful if you dislike the plugged-in sensation of ear tips or want to remain somewhat aware of your surroundings. It is less suitable if your priority is strong isolation on a plane, train or in a loud office. Choose them for open-fit comfort and convenience, not to recreate the hush of sealed ANC earbuds.
Fit and comfort depend on your ears
Because the shape is fixed and has no interchangeable tips, there is less opportunity to adjust the fit. Reviewers disagree in ways that matter: RTINGS describes possible stability issues for some ears and intense movement; SoundGuys’ reviewer found the buds initially secure but experienced rubbing after about 30 minutes. Other assessments have found them comfortable. Those are individual experiences, not a reliable prediction for every wearer.

For everyday listening, try them for longer than a quick in-store fit check if you can, and pay attention to pressure, rubbing and whether they shift when you move your jaw or turn your head. For running or vigorous workouts, a stationary fit is not enough to establish security: Tom’s Guide describes a contributor’s 22-mile run in which the buds moved less than expected but did not feel as secure as some running headphones, and battery life was a limitation. That single run does not establish suitability for every runner. Consider movement intensity, your own fit and the device’s water-resistance information for your market before using them for sport.
AirPods 5 case models compared
Both listed variants include ANC. The more expensive Wireless Charging Case model adds charging and locating conveniences plus stem volume control; the standard version is the simpler USB-C option.

Battery life is the main practical weakness
Even the wireless-case model’s official ANC-on estimate is up to five hours per charge. The case extends total listening time, but it does not remove the need to recharge the earbuds during longer continuous sessions. Reviewers also identify runtime as a weakness, and the long-run account above shows why per-charge time can matter more than case total for all-day use.

If your normal listening sessions are short and you recharge between them, the case total may be adequate. If you regularly listen for many hours without a break, compare per-charge runtime rather than relying on the combined case figure. Turning noise control off raises Apple’s estimates, but that gives up ANC.

Choose AirPods 5 if avoiding ear tips is a priority and you accept less isolation and shorter listening time between charges. Favor Pro 3 if a seal, stronger low-frequency isolation, or longer continuous runtime matters more. These are reviewer comparisons, not a guarantee that either shape will fit every person. Compatibility and buying considerations
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3 and says the earbuds can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, although functionality may be limited. Its UK specifications list system requirements across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV and Vision Pro. Check the requirements for your device, operating-system release and country before purchase, especially if you depend on Apple-specific features such as Siri integration or Live Translation.
- Pick the standard case if USB-C charging is all you need and the lower Canadian launch price is relevant to your market.
- Pick the wireless-case version if you will use Qi or Apple Watch charging, want the Find My case speaker or value stem volume controls.
- Try the fit before committing if comfort or stability is uncertain; a fixed open-ear shape is inherently personal.
- Do not buy them expecting sealed-earbud isolation or long uninterrupted ANC playback.
AirPods 5 make open-fit ANC more practical, but “best open-fit earbuds yet” is an evaluative headline rather than an independently established category ranking. The strongest case for them is a listener who wants Apple features and some noise reduction without silicone tips. The case against them is equally clear: open-fit ANC has limits, fit is not universal, and per-charge battery life is modest.
