That keeps your purchases, subscriptions and account history attached to one sign-in. Create a second Apple Account only when you need an ongoing, separate storefront or cannot complete the change without entering payment details. A second account is supported in some Apple workflows, but it splits purchase and service associations rather than replacing the original account.
Apple now calls Apple IDs “Apple Accounts,” although “Apple ID” remains the wording many people search for. The choice also affects Family Sharing, content availability, subscriptions, payment methods and the possibility of later purchase migration.

At a glance: which option fits?
| Situation | Usually the better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have permanently moved to another country or region | Change the existing account’s country or region | Keeps purchases and services under one account, if you can clear Apple’s requirements. |
| You cannot provide a payment method for the new region | Wait until you are physically there, then consider creating a new account | Apple says a new account may fit if you do not want to enter payment information during a region change. |
| You need two storefront identities for an ongoing cross-region arrangement | Use a second account for Media & Purchases | It preserves separate storefront associations, but purchase histories and services remain divided. |
| You rely on Family Sharing purchase sharing | Check the family’s countries and sharing account before either choice | Purchase Sharing requires family members to use the same Apple Account country or region. |
| You hope to combine two accounts later | Do not assume migration will work | Apple’s purchase-migration feature is conditional and requires both accounts to use the same purchase country or region. |
What changing your existing account actually does
A country or region change moves the storefront attached to your current Apple Account. It is not simply a language or address preference: the available apps, media, subscriptions, payment rules and prices can differ by storefront. Apple warns that some content might not be available in the new country or region.
The change does not mean every existing purchase is automatically erased. The practical risk is that an item you previously obtained may not be offered for redownload in the destination storefront. Apple recommends redownloading important apps, music, movies, TV shows and books to every device that may need to play or read them later.

What stays together
Using the same account means there is one purchase history to consult, one place to manage subscriptions and one sign-in associated with your normal Apple services. That reduces the chance of updating an app with the wrong account, cancelling a subscription from the wrong storefront or forgetting which account owns a rental or Season Pass.
It does not make catalogs identical across countries. The destination storefront still controls what can be bought, downloaded or redownloaded, and local payment and billing rules still apply.
Requirements to clear before changing country or region
Apple’s current country-change guidance requires several account conditions to be resolved first. Treat this as a checklist, not a sequence you can safely skip.
Spend the remaining account balance
Use any Apple Account balance before starting. Even a small amount can block the change if it is less than the price of a single item. If you cannot spend the final balance, Apple says Apple Support may be able to clear it.
Cancel blocking subscriptions and wait
Cancel subscriptions that prevent a region change, then wait until the subscription period has ended. This can include Apple services and other subscriptions billed through the account. If cancelling Apple One or iCloud+ is necessary, check what will happen to your stored iCloud information before confirming; a lower storage allowance can affect data that exceeds the new limit.
Cancellation and expiration are different events. Turning off renewal normally leaves access active until the paid period ends, so the country control may remain unavailable during that interval. Do not start the move immediately after tapping Cancel.
Let pending activity finish
Wait for memberships, pre-orders, rentals, Season Passes and pending refunds to clear. A transaction that looks minor can still prevent the storefront switch until Apple’s systems finish processing it. Check purchase history for pending items rather than relying only on email receipts.

The new country or region may require a valid local payment method and billing address. The details must satisfy the destination storefront; an old card or an address from the previous country may not be accepted. If you do not want to enter a payment method, Apple’s guidance is to wait until you are physically in the new country or region and then create a new Apple Account instead of changing the existing one.
Check Family Sharing first
Family Sharing status can block a change. Even when the change is technically available, moving to a different country or region can affect shared purchases and subscriptions, so review the family consequences before leaving the group or changing the organizer’s account.

Back up content before the switch
Before changing storefronts, download anything you may need offline or may be unable to redownload later. Prioritize items that are important for travel, work, school or accessibility.
- Apps that are no longer listed in the destination storefront.
- Music, movies and TV shows you expect to use without an internet connection.
- Books you may need to read on a device that will not be signed in again soon.
- Any files or photos whose continued iCloud storage depends on an Apple One or iCloud+ plan you may cancel.
Keep the devices signed in until downloads finish. A region change is not a substitute for a device backup: maintain your normal device backup as well. Make a short list of apps with in-app subscriptions or account credentials so you can confirm their status after the storefront changes.

Do not describe this preparation as a promise that every title will disappear. Apple’s warning is narrower: some types of content might not be available in the new country or region. Downloading beforehand protects you against that possibility.
How to change the country or region
Apple provides the change in account settings on iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro, in Apple Music or Apple TV on Mac and Windows, and on the web. The labels can vary slightly by operating-system version, but each route leads to the account’s Country/Region control.
iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Open Media & Purchases, then choose View Account if prompted to authenticate.
- Tap Country/Region and choose the destination country or region.
- Review and accept the applicable terms and conditions.
- Enter the requested payment method and billing address for the destination, then submit the change.
Mac or Windows PC
- Open the Apple Music or Apple TV app in which you manage your account.
- Open the account settings area and select Country/Region.
- Choose the new country or region and accept its terms.
- Provide payment and billing information when Apple requests it.
On the web
- Sign in at account.apple.com.
- Open Personal Information, then Country/Region.
- Select the destination, accept the terms and enter any required payment and billing details.
If the control is missing or the change is refused, return to the preparation checklist. An unspent balance, an active subscription, a pending rental or refund, Family Sharing status or missing destination payment details is more likely than a device fault.
After the change: checks that prevent surprises
- Open the App Store and confirm that the destination storefront and billing address are correct.
- Review subscriptions and note which ones need to be restarted in the new storefront.
- Check downloaded music, video and books on each device you prepared.
- Verify iCloud storage if Apple One or iCloud+ was cancelled.
- Review Family Sharing access and test any shared apps that your household relies on.
- Keep receipts and account-security details for support, especially if a balance or refund was pending during the change.
These checks separate a successful storefront switch from a complete service transition. Some content or sharing relationships may require separate action even though the account country changed successfully.

Family Sharing can change the answer
Family members use their own Apple Accounts, and eligible purchases and subscriptions can be shared, but not every subscription or item qualifies. Some subscriptions require additional setup.
The account used for purchase sharing determines which account’s purchases and media subscriptions family members can access. Apple supports using a different Apple Account for that purchase-sharing role, but changing it can remove access to purchases or media subscriptions associated with the previous account.
Purchase Sharing requires family members to be in the same Apple Account country or region. A member who changes region may lose access to other family members’ purchases, and an app shared by another member may stop working. Check the organizer’s country, each member’s country and the account currently used for purchase sharing before making a change.

If your household depends on a shared app, subscription or media library, document which account bought it and which account is used for Purchase Sharing. A second account can preserve a storefront identity but will not bypass the same-region rule for family sharing.

A second account is most defensible when the separation is intentional and ongoing. For example, you may need a distinct storefront identity for a continuing cross-region arrangement, while keeping your primary account for iCloud and everyday device features.
Apple’s own guidance specifically identifies a case where a new account may fit: you do not want to enter a payment method while changing regions, and you will wait until you are physically in the new country or region before creating the account.
The operational trade-off
A second account does not merge your history. Purchases, subscriptions, balances and other services remain associated with the account that obtained them. You may need to authenticate with one account for iCloud and another for Media & Purchases, and remember which account owns an app or subscription when updating, cancelling or requesting support.
This setup is not a promise of unrestricted access to every regional catalog. Storefront rules still apply, and Family Sharing has its own same-region requirement. It can also make routine tasks less obvious: an update may request credentials for the account that originally downloaded the app, while a subscription receipt may be attached to the other account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the split typically works
Apple’s purchase-migration documentation describes a common arrangement: the primary account is signed in to iCloud and most iPhone or iPad features, while the secondary account is signed in under Media & Purchases. Keep a written record of which account owns subscriptions and important purchases, especially before removing an account from a device.
Before choosing this arrangement, decide which account will receive future purchases, which payment method belongs to each storefront and who in a Family Sharing group relies on those purchases. Without that plan, the convenience of a second storefront can turn into repeated sign-outs and ownership confusion.
Can you merge the accounts later?
Apple has a purchase-migration feature for eligible accounts, but it is a conditional consolidation path, not a general merge and not a way to retain two different regional storefronts under one account.
Apple’s reviewed migration guidance requires both accounts to be set to the same country and region for purchases. It also lists requirements involving two-factor authentication, account-sharing status, Family Sharing membership, remaining balance, pending rentals or pre-orders, payment-method verification, a current operating system and overall account eligibility.

In the documented setup, the primary account is the one used with iCloud and most device features, and the secondary account is the one used for Media & Purchases. Migration changes that arrangement: the secondary account can no longer be used for Media & Purchases, and Apple instructs users to sign in to the primary account on their devices.
Because eligibility and exact steps can vary by region, verify the support instructions for your country before relying on migration; the guidance reviewed for this feature was Apple’s Australia support page. Do not create a second account merely because you expect an automatic merge later.
What each choice costs in time and administration
| Consideration | Existing-account change | Second account |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Resolve balance, subscriptions, pending activity, Family Sharing and destination billing. | Create and maintain another sign-in, with its own purchase and service associations. |
| Content risk | Some items may not be available in the new storefront; download important content first. | Each storefront keeps its own catalog rules, so ownership and redownload questions remain split. |
| Family Sharing | Country changes can affect shared purchases and apps. | Purchase Sharing still requires family members to use the same country or region. |
| Long-term management | One account history and one purchase identity. | Separate credentials, receipts, balances and subscription ownership. |
| Future consolidation | No consolidation is needed if everything remains on one account. | Migration may be possible only if both accounts and regions meet Apple’s conditions. |
Neither option requires a new device. The meaningful cost is administrative: waiting for subscriptions or transactions to clear, downloading content, supplying valid local billing information and managing account ownership over time.
A practical decision process
- Confirm whether the move is permanent. If you have relocated indefinitely, start with changing the existing account.
- List blockers. Check balance, subscriptions, pending transactions, rentals, pre-orders, refunds and Family Sharing.
- Confirm destination requirements. Make sure you can provide the required payment method and billing address, or wait until you are physically in the destination if you plan to create a new account without payment details.
- Download essential content. Save apps and media that may not be available in the new storefront.
- Choose whether separation is acceptable. If maintaining two purchase histories and service logins will create more work than it solves, do not create a second account.
- Assess migration only after matching regions. Do not create a second account on the assumption that Apple will later combine it with the first.
Scenario examples
You permanently relocated and have no blockers
Change the existing account. You retain a single purchase history and avoid managing two Media & Purchases sign-ins. Add the destination payment method and billing address, then verify Family Sharing and downloads.

You arrived temporarily and still need the original storefront
Do not change regions casually. A permanent-looking storefront change can affect subscriptions, shared purchases and availability. If the need for a second storefront is ongoing, treat a second account as an intentional split rather than a quick travel setting.
You cannot provide destination billing information yet
Apple’s guidance points to waiting until you are physically in the new country or region and creating a new account if you do not want to enter payment details during a change. Understand that this creates a separate purchase identity.
Your family shares purchases across several devices
Pause before either choice. Confirm that all members can remain in the same country or region for Purchase Sharing and identify which account supplies shared purchases. A region mismatch can remove access even when the devices themselves are unchanged.
Troubleshooting common roadblocks
“I still have a small balance”
Spend it if possible. If the amount is below the price of any available item, contact Apple Support about clearing the remainder.
“I cancelled, but the country option is still blocked”
Cancellation may stop renewal without ending the current subscription immediately. Wait until the paid period ends, then check again. Pending refunds, rentals, pre-orders or Season Passes can require additional time.

“My Family Sharing purchases disappeared”
Check whether your account and the family’s purchase-sharing account are still in the same country or region. A region mismatch can remove access to shared purchases and can make some shared apps stop working.
“I cannot redownload an old purchase”
The item may not be offered in the destination storefront. This is why Apple recommends downloading important content before the change. The situation does not by itself prove that every purchase was erased.
“I want two regions but also one combined history”
Those goals conflict. A second account preserves separation, while migration requires matching purchase regions and other eligibility conditions. Pick the arrangement that matches your long-term need rather than treating either option as a reversible shortcut.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing my Apple Account country delete my purchases?
Not necessarily. Apple warns that some content may not be available in the new storefront, so an item might not be redownloadable there. Download important apps, music, movies, TV shows and books before changing, and do not treat an availability problem as proof that every purchase was erased.
Do I need a local payment method to change regions?
The destination may require a valid payment method and billing address. If you do not want to enter payment information, Apple says to wait until you are physically in the new country or region and then consider creating a new Apple Account.
How long must I wait after cancelling a subscription?
Cancellation can stop renewal while the paid period continues. Apple’s guidance requires blocking subscriptions to end, so wait until the subscription period has expired. Pending refunds, rentals, pre-orders, memberships or Season Passes may also need to clear.
Can I keep Family Sharing after changing countries?
Review it before changing. Purchase Sharing requires family members to use the same Apple Account country or region. A member who changes region may lose access to other members’ purchases, and shared apps may stop working.
Can I use one account for iCloud and another for purchases?
Apple documents a setup in which a primary account is used for iCloud and most device features while a secondary account is signed in for Media & Purchases. This is supported in some workflows, but ownership, subscriptions and receipts remain split.
Can Apple merge two Apple Accounts later?
Apple offers purchase migration for eligible accounts, not a guaranteed general merge. Both accounts must have the same purchase country or region, and other conditions include two-factor authentication, account status, Family Sharing, balances, pending items, payment verification, current software and eligibility.
Should I create a second account just for travel?
Usually not for a short trip. A second account creates separate purchase and service associations and does not bypass regional catalog or Family Sharing rules. Consider it only when the separate storefront need is ongoing and intentional.
What should I do if the Country/Region option is missing?
Recheck the blockers: remaining balance, active subscriptions, pending refunds, rentals, pre-orders, Season Passes, memberships, Family Sharing status and destination payment details. If the balance cannot be spent, Apple Support may be able to clear it.

Choose a country change for a permanent relocation when you can clear Apple’s balance, subscription, pending-transaction, Family Sharing and payment requirements. Download important content first because storefront availability can differ. Choose a second Apple Account only for a deliberate, continuing need for separate storefronts—or when Apple’s payment requirements make changing the existing account impractical—and accept that purchases, subscriptions and support history will remain divided. Treat purchase migration as conditional, not as a promised merge.
