Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro is built to sustain demanding performance by changing how heat leaves the chip—not just by increasing peak speed. Its revised chip package, thermal interface, larger vapor chamber and heat-spreading display plate are designed as one system. Apple reports up to 40 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, but that is a company claim, not an independently verified long-duration test result.
What Apple means by “making speed last”
A fast processor can deliver a high burst of performance, then reduce its output as heat builds up. Apple’s explanation of A20 Pro focuses on the next part of that problem: moving heat away from the silicon so the phone can sustain demanding work for longer. In an October 13, 2026, interview with The Telegraph India, Anush Venkatesan, senior director of iPhone product marketing at Apple, described the approach as a new architecture paired with efficiency across the system.

Dan Murray, Apple’s VP of Silicon Engineering, put the constraint plainly: “We can’t avoid the fact that all this compute capability does consume power, and that power, in turn, generates heat, and we need to extract that heat from the silicon.” The design Apple describes is therefore not just a faster chip. It is a route for heat to travel from the chip into structures that can spread it through the phone.

Apple’s account has four connected parts: a changed chip package, a direct route from silicon to the vapor chamber, a flexible thermal interface, and a heat-spreading display plate. Each addresses a different point in the path between heat generation and its distribution through the device.

1. Silicon and memory sit side by side
Apple says its custom A20 Pro package places silicon and memory next to each other rather than stacking memory over the system-on-a-chip. That takes memory out of the chip’s thermal path, according to the company. The packaging change also allows the silicon to connect directly to the next-generation vapor chamber.
2. A flexible interface couples the chip to cooling hardware
The Telegraph India interview describes a “metal over foam” thermal interface material between the chip and the cooling system. Banafsheh Barabadi, senior manager of Thermal Product Design at Apple, said: “For the first time, we could actually couple directly to our thermal solution from the silicon, and we designed the entire system around it.” The interview characterizes the interface as flexible; it does not provide material specifications or independent measurements of its effect.

3. A larger vapor chamber receives and spreads heat
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the chamber in iPhone 17 Pro. The interview describes the chamber as part of the phone’s central structure. A vapor chamber transfers heat across a larger area than the small region where it originates; Apple’s design places it directly in the thermal route from A20 Pro.
4. The display plate helps distribute heat
Beyond the chamber, the interview describes a display plate that combines nano-twin copper with graphite to spread heat. This final element broadens the area over which heat is distributed. Barabadi said: “What I find most compelling about the work is none of that is visible to the user, and that is exactly the point.”

How to read Apple’s performance numbers
Apple’s September 9, 2026, Newsroom announcement gives several figures, but they describe different things and use different comparison baselines. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of speed.
| Apple’s stated figure | What it compares or describes |
|---|---|
| Up to 40% better sustained performance | iPhone 18 Pro compared with iPhone 17 Pro; Apple’s claim about performance over time. |
| Up to 40% faster GPU | A20 Pro GPU compared with A19 Pro; a graphics-performance claim, not the sustained-performance figure. |
| 50% more memory bandwidth | A20 Pro compared with A19 Pro. |
| Three times the vapor-chamber surface area | iPhone 18 Pro compared with iPhone 17 Pro. |
| 32 total Neural Engine cores | Dual 16-core Neural Engine; Apple says it provides twice the AI processing power of A19 Pro. |
Apple also describes A20 Pro as a 2-nanometer chip with a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU. These specifications and comparisons are Apple’s published claims. The announcement and interview do not provide controlled, independent long-duration benchmarks, thermal measurements or stress-test results, so they establish what Apple says the design is intended to do—not how much improvement a particular user will see.

What the claims mean for demanding workloads
Apple’s sustained-performance figure is the most directly relevant claim for workloads that keep the processor busy, such as extended gaming, video recording or repeated on-device AI tasks. The GPU figure, by contrast, compares graphics performance between chip generations; it does not establish that a game will run 40 percent faster throughout a long session. Memory bandwidth and Neural Engine figures refer to still other capabilities.

Real-world results can depend on workload, ambient conditions, power use and battery state. The published claims do not specify those conditions or quantify battery impact. Without independent tests that hold those factors constant, there is no supported basis here for ranking the iPhone 18 Pro against another device under prolonged load.

Why the system-level change matters
The key design idea is coordination: Apple says the package removes memory from the silicon’s thermal path, the interface connects the chip to cooling hardware, the enlarged vapor chamber spreads heat, and copper and graphite distribute it farther through the phone. A20 Pro’s raw specifications matter, but the thermal system is the part of the explanation aimed specifically at keeping performance up after heat accumulates.
