The Hatfield Apple-1 sold for $1,148,200 including the buyer’s premium in an October 2026 auction reported as being conducted by Bonhams. Two bidders competed for 28 minutes, taking the computer well beyond its $500,000–$800,000 estimate. The result was described as a record for a commercially sold production Apple-1, although the Apple-1 Registry lists a higher January 2026 result for a different category of Apple-1.
What the Hatfield Apple-1 sold for
Reports by MacRumors and 9to5Mac put the final price at $1,148,200, with the buyer’s premium included. The auction estimate was $500,000–$800,000, so the winning bid cleared the top of the estimate by a substantial margin. The lot attracted two competing bidders, and the contest lasted 28 minutes.

9to5Mac’s Ben Lovejoy summarized the result: “An Apple-1 computer sold at auction has set a new record for $1,148,200.” The “record” wording refers specifically to a commercially sold production Apple-1, rather than every Apple-1 transaction in every category.
Why this Apple-1 was unusually valuable
It has a documented owner history
The computer is known as the Hatfield Apple-1 after its original owner, Fred Hatfield. A named provenance gives collectors more than an unidentified early computer: it connects the machine to a specific person and to a documented episode in Apple’s early history.

The motherboard carries Steve Wozniak’s signature
The motherboard was signed by Steve Wozniak. On a scarce early computer, an original signature can materially change how collectors assess a lot, especially when it is attached to the machine itself rather than presented as a separate autograph.
The lot included a 1978 letter signed by Steve Jobs
The auction also included a 1978 letter signed by Steve Jobs. The known story behind it is unusually direct: Hatfield complained to Apple that the Apple-1 had limited software. Jobs responded by offering an Apple II motherboard plus $400 in exchange for the Apple-1. Hatfield kept his computer instead.

The available reporting identifies the letter’s date, signature and offer, but does not establish that it contains a longer technical explanation or a different cash amount. Its importance is the combination of an early Jobs document, a named owner and a decision that preserved the original Apple-1.

How the result compares with other reported Apple-1 prices
| Reference | Amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Hatfield Apple-1, October 2026 | $1,148,200 | Bonhams result as reported by MacRumors, including the buyer’s premium; described as a record for a commercially sold production Apple-1. |
| Hatfield Apple-1 auction estimate | $500,000–$800,000 | Pre-sale estimate reported by MacRumors; not a transaction price. |
| Hatfield Apple-1, reported 2013 sale | Approximately $686,000 | Earlier reported sale of the same computer, with the amount described as approximate in 2026 coverage. |
| Celebration Apple-1, January 2026 | $2,750,000 | Apple-1 Registry record listed for that machine; it is a separate result and shows why Apple-1 records must be described by category. |
The Hatfield computer therefore rose from an approximately $686,000 reported sale in 2013 to $1,148,200 in 2026, but that change should not be treated as a simple market index. The two prices may reflect different auction conditions, buyer’s premiums, bidder pools and assessments of the lot’s provenance and documents.

Why one million-dollar sale does not establish a standard Apple-1 price
The Apple-1 Registry cautions that auction results are difficult to compare directly. Collectors evaluating another machine should check the details that can move the price by hundreds of thousands of dollars:
- Working condition: whether the computer operates, and whether it has technical faults or missing components.
- Provenance: whether the ownership chain is documented and whether a named previous owner adds historical significance.
- Signatures: whether Steve Jobs or Steve Wozniak signed the computer or an accompanying document, and whether the signature’s authenticity and placement are established.
- Production identity: the machine’s production batch or Apple-1 Registry identity.
- Included material: letters, manuals, cases and accessories can make two otherwise similar lots materially different.
- Auction terms: the venue and buyer’s premium affect the headline total and the amount a buyer actually pays.
- Bidding behavior: the number of bidders and the intensity of the contest can push a single result far beyond an estimate.
In the Hatfield sale, the signed motherboard, Jobs letter, named ownership and 28-minute, two-bidder contest all formed part of the story. Those features do not automatically transfer to an Apple-1 without the same documentation or condition.

What the rejected Apple II offer means
Hatfield’s decision is significant because it preserved an original Apple-1 that might otherwise have been exchanged for a newer board. His complaint also records an early practical limitation: the Apple-1’s software offering did not meet his expectations. Jobs’ proposed remedy was not a generic promise of support; it was an Apple II motherboard plus $400 in return for the older machine.
That exchange never happened. Hatfield retained the Apple-1, and the surviving letter now links the physical computer to a specific customer conversation with Apple in 1978. The historical value comes from the decision’s consequences: the machine, its Wozniak signature and the Jobs-signed correspondence remained together for later collectors.
How to read the “record” headline
The strongest conclusion is narrow but important: $1,148,200 is a new reported high for a commercially sold production Apple-1, including the buyer’s premium. It is not evidence that every Apple-1 is now worth more than a million dollars, nor is it the highest figure listed for every Apple-1 category. The Apple-1 Registry’s $2,750,000 January 2026 Celebration Apple-1 entry demonstrates why a sale must be identified by machine, provenance and classification.
For anyone researching an Apple-1, the Hatfield result is best used as a comparison point. A meaningful valuation requires the machine’s registry identity, condition report, ownership records, signatures, accompanying documents, auction terms and the circumstances of the bidding—not just the Apple-1 name.
