NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day for October 16, 2026, titled “Chasing the ISS,” shows two bright spacecraft trails crossing the evening sky above Lauffen, Germany: the International Space Station (ISS) and Space Shuttle Discovery. Discovery had just launched on mission STS-124 and was climbing toward an orbital rendezvous with the station. The apparent split between their paths is real perspective geometry, not a photographic error: the spacecraft were at different altitudes, so parallax changed their positions relative to the photographer.

What the “Chasing the ISS” APOD picture shows

The prominent trail on the right is the ISS. The other major trail, nearer the center of the image, is Space Shuttle Discovery. Both vehicles are moving through the same sky, but they are not at the same distance from the camera. Their tracks therefore appear to diverge as they recede across the frame.

The photograph was made in Lauffen, Germany, shortly after Discovery’s STS-124 launch. Discovery was traveling toward an orbital rendezvous with the ISS, making the pair an unusual subject for an evening-sky photograph: one vehicle was already in orbit while the other was still following its launch trajectory.

Why the ISS and shuttle trails seem to split apart

Parallax from different altitudes

Parallax is the apparent change in an object’s position when it is viewed from a different location or when objects sit at different distances from the observer. In this image, the ISS and Discovery were separated vertically as well as horizontally. Even if their flight paths were related, their different ranges from Lauffen projected onto different lines in the sky.

NASA/APOD describes the effect directly: “Parallax causes the paths of the ISS (right) and Discovery (near center) to seem to diverge as they were at very different altitudes.” The separation is consequently a useful visual clue about three-dimensional geometry, not evidence that the camera moved between shots.

The timing made the geometry visible

Discovery passed over Lauffen about 21 minutes after launch, while the ISS passage was about 10 minutes after launch. Those separate moments, combined with the vehicles’ different altitudes and directions, produced two distinct luminous tracks in the composite.

How Jürgen Michelberger made the photograph

Photographer Jürgen Michelberger used a camera fixed to a tripod. He made two exposures of roughly two minutes each and combined them into one composite image. A stable tripod prevents star and spacecraft trails from being displaced by camera shake during the long exposures; combining frames allows both passages to appear together in a single view.

The image should therefore be understood as a composite of two approximately two-minute exposures, not as one uninterrupted exposure lasting the entire interval between the ISS and Discovery sightings. That distinction matters when comparing this APOD with single-exposure ISS photographs.

When the ISS is visible from Earth

The ISS is easiest to see shortly after sunset or before sunrise. It shines by reflecting sunlight, so it can be bright while the ground is already dark or before daylight reaches the observer. When the station enters Earth’s shadow, it stops reflecting direct sunlight toward the observer and disappears from view.

NASA APOD material describes the station as completing an orbit in about 90 minutes and making roughly 16 orbits per day. Those figures describe the station’s rapid orbital cycle, but they do not mean it will be visible on every orbit from every location. Visibility depends on the observer’s location, the station’s track, the Sun’s angle, and local sky conditions.

  • What is in the frame? An ISS-only trail is a different subject from a pairing of the ISS with a launch vehicle such as Discovery.
  • How was it captured? Note whether the camera was fixed on a tripod, how long each exposure lasted, and whether multiple frames were composited.
  • What geometry is involved? Different spacecraft altitudes can create parallax and make apparently related paths separate.
  • What were the viewing conditions? Compare the time after sunset, remaining sky brightness, and the observing location.
