API Keys, OAuth, or Workload Identity: Which Should AI Agents Use?

For production AI agents, use workload identity where supported, OAuth for delegated user access or app-only flows, and API keys only when the destination requires or accepts them and they can be tightly controlled.

For a production agent acting as itself, prefer a distinct workload identity—managed or attached identity when it runs on a supported platform, or federation when it runs elsewhere. Use OAuth when the agent needs a user’s delegated access or a service supports app-only OAuth. Use an API key only when that is what the destination supports and you can restrict, protect, and rotate it. Whichever method you choose, authentication identifies the caller; authorization must still limit what it can do.

Start with whose authority the agent needs

The key decision is whether the agent should act as a service in its own right or access resources on behalf of a person. Choose an identity model that represents that authority, then check which authentication methods the destination accepts. A technically valid credential can still grant the wrong principal too much access.

  • Agent acting as itself: Give it a distinct workload or application identity, then grant only the permissions it needs.
  • Agent acting for a user: Use a user-consent or delegated OAuth flow that conveys the user’s authorized access. Do not give the agent a human password or make it reuse the user’s whole session.
  • Destination with limited options: Follow the destination’s supported authentication methods. Some services require a principal-based identity and will not accept a standard API key.

How the three methods differ

Decision API key OAuth Workload identity or federation
Who or what it represents Often a project, application, or key holder; exact meaning depends on the API. A user who granted access, or an application acting under its own authority, depending on the OAuth flow. A running workload or agent identified through its platform or an external identity provider.
When the destination can use it Only when the service accepts API keys. A key may not satisfy an API that requires an IAM principal. When the service supports the needed user-delegated or application OAuth grant. When the runtime and destination support managed identity, federation, or token exchange.
Credential exposure A static secret can be copied or leaked and may remain usable until restricted, rotated, or revoked. Access tokens are time-limited, but client credentials and refresh tokens still need secure handling and lifecycle controls. Can avoid distributing a long-lived application key by exchanging workload identity for short-lived credentials.
Permission controls Depend on whether the API lets you restrict the key by API, resource, operation, or environment. Scopes and grants can constrain access; select the flow that matches the intended authority. Bind the workload to narrowly scoped IAM roles or equivalent service permissions.
Accountability Shared keys can make it harder to distinguish which agent or action made a request. User-delegated claims can preserve user context; app-only OAuth can identify the calling application. Per-agent identities and provider audit logs can distinguish agents and users.

These are decision dimensions, not a universal ranking. A method’s protections and capabilities depend on the API, provider, OAuth flow, cloud, and runtime.

Choose the pattern that fits where the agent runs and what it does

Agent running in a supported cloud environment

Use the platform’s attached or managed workload identity when the destination supports it. For production code on Google Cloud, Google recommends attaching a user-managed service account to the resource and using Application Default Credentials (ADC). Grant that identity only the roles the agent needs rather than defaulting to a broadly privileged service identity.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Agent running outside the destination cloud

Use workload identity federation if the workload’s identity provider and destination support it. The workload presents an identity assertion it already obtains from its environment, which can be exchanged for a destination credential instead of requiring a long-lived service-account key. Google recommends federation for workloads running on-premises or in another cloud. OpenAI documents federation for supported API and Codex workloads, with sources including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, and SPIFFE.

Agent accessing a user’s resources

Use a user-consent or delegated OAuth flow with only the scopes the task requires. Google’s OAuth Client ID guidance describes identifying an application that accesses resources owned by end users. Its MCP guidance describes an OAuth client acting within the authenticated user’s resources and authorized scopes without sharing the user’s actual credentials with the AI application.

Agent using a SaaS tool under its own authority

If the SaaS supports app-only OAuth, client-credentials OAuth can represent the agent acting as itself rather than as a user. Google documents a 2-legged OAuth auth-manager flow for external tools, but marks that feature Preview; verify its current availability and support before making it a dependency.

Destination accepts only an API key

A dedicated, restricted key can be a reasonable integration choice when the destination accepts keys and does not require a principal-based identity. Limit the key to the required API and permissions, store it in a secret manager or execution boundary, and define rotation and revocation before deployment.

Protect credentials and make agent actions accountable

The authentication protocol does not replace operational security. Apply controls at the identity, authorization, execution, and audit layers:

  • Give each production agent a distinct identity; do not reuse a human login or share one key across unrelated agents.
  • Grant only the permissions required for the task and destination, using narrow OAuth scopes, IAM roles, resource restrictions, conditions, or equivalent controls.
  • Prefer short-lived credentials, refreshed or exchanged through trusted platform components.
  • Keep raw credentials out of prompts, agent-readable memory, tool output, and logs. Where possible, let a gateway or credential manager retrieve and inject credentials at execution time.
  • When acting for a person, carry user context as verifiable claims while keeping the agent’s identity distinct from the user’s.
  • Log actions distinctly and document how to disable the identity, revoke tokens, and rotate any underlying credential.

AWS’s Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens, AGENTSEC03, says: “Every agent-to-agent and agent-to-service communication authenticates through verifiable mechanisms, whether that is certificate-based mutual TLS, signed OAuth tokens, or platform-managed workload identity.” AWS also calls for separate agent and human permissions, least privilege, short-lived credentials, and audit records that attribute actions. Google Cloud’s Agent Identity overview describes per-agent isolation, credentials managed through an auth manager, and audit visibility for agent and user identities. Microsoft’s agent identity blueprints recommend federated identity credentials with managed identities or client certificates rather than client secrets as production client credentials. These are platform-specific recommendations, not a guarantee that every API or connector supports the same mechanism.

Verify support and lifecycle details before implementation

Authentication support varies by destination and can change. Check the specific API or connector’s accepted methods and OAuth grants, required scopes or roles, token lifetime, federation support, and revocation behavior. Google Cloud’s general authentication guidance was updated 2026-09-30 UTC; the provider-specific Google, AWS, Microsoft, and OpenAI capabilities described above reflect documentation available as of 2026-10-04 UTC. Google warns that service-account keys can create security risks if not managed correctly and advises choosing a more secure alternative where possible. Its standard API keys do not authenticate services that require an IAM principal.

No comparable official statistic establishes that one of these methods is universally safer or more widely adopted. The practical choice follows the principal the agent should represent, the destination’s accepted methods, and the narrowest workable permission model.
