Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Aosu R1 Ultra is a sensible budget video doorbell if you want included local recording and useful everyday features without a required monthly plan. Its main catches are a battery you must remove from the wall to recharge, monochrome infrared night vision, and headline specifications that need context. A TechRadar reviewer used it for about two weeks with local storage and no subscription; the findings below distinguish that test from Aosu’s product claims.
What you get with the Aosu R1 Ultra
Aosu sells the R1 Ultra with an aosuBase mini, which stores recordings locally. Aosu describes loop recording of up to 60 days; Best Buy’s listing specifies 8GB of base memory and the same recording duration. That is a maximum, not a promise that every household will retain every clip for 60 days: loop recording reuses storage, and the actual history depends on recording activity and settings.

The R1 Ultra can run on its battery or be connected to 8–24VAC wiring. Aosu lists Alexa and Google Assistant support and IP65 weather resistance. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent test results. See Aosu’s R1 Ultra product page and Best Buy listing.

Does local storage mean no monthly fee?
In TechRadar’s 2026 review, the reviewer used the doorbell for a fortnight without subscribing and reported access to alerts, live view, two-way talk, custom detection zones, and local playback. AosuProtect+ is optional, offering cloud backup and additional cloud features; the review’s experience supports using the core functions without paying for that plan, rather than a claim that every feature is free under all circumstances.

That distinction is useful when comparing a subscription-free video doorbell: check whether the recording destination is local or cloud-based, whether clips remain accessible without a plan, and which advanced features are plan-gated. TechRadar’s test is described in its Aosu R1 Ultra review.
Do the camera specifications tell the whole story?
Aosu advertises a 5MP camera, enhanced WDR, a 166-degree diagonal field of view, and a 4:3 image. TechRadar lists the resolution as 2560 × 1920 and reports 6× digital zoom and a 15fps capture rate. These figures describe different aspects of the image: a broad diagonal field of view helps show more of the entry area, while the 4:3 frame is relatively tall and can include more of a person or package near the door. Neither number alone establishes how much useful detail you will see in your own lighting and installation.
The 6× zoom is digital, so it enlarges a crop rather than adding optical detail; the reviewer says the image softens as you zoom in. Treat “5MP UHD” as a specification, not a guarantee that faces or distant details will remain clear in every clip. Aosu’s figures are manufacturer claims; the resolution, zoom, and frame-rate details are from TechRadar’s review.

How well does motion detection work?
Aosu lists radar, PIR, and AI detection. TechRadar’s reviewer found the combination useful for distinguishing approaching or lingering activity from passersby, but that is a reviewer’s observation, not a measured false-alert rate. Results can vary with mounting position, the scene in view, and chosen settings.
Custom detection zones, which the reviewer reports using without a subscription, can help exclude busy areas from alerts. If notifications are noisy, adjust the zone and sensitivity where available, then observe whether the change reduces irrelevant alerts without masking activity at the door.
What are the night-vision and battery trade-offs?
Infrared night vision is monochrome
The camera uses infrared night vision, so its low-light image is black and white. TechRadar notes that the R1 Ultra has neither a built-in spotlight nor a color night mode. A porch light may illuminate the scene, but it does not turn the doorbell’s infrared system into color night vision.

Recharging requires taking the doorbell down
TechRadar describes the 5,000mAh battery as non-removable. When it needs recharging, you must remove the doorbell from its mount rather than swap in a charged spare. Hardwiring is an alternative if your existing wiring is compatible with the listed 8–24VAC range.

TechRadar says the estimate assumes up to 10 events per day, each lasting 20 seconds. That is a conditional manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed interval; frequent motion, live viewing, and other settings can change how often charging is needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What connectivity does it need?
The doorbell connects over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. The included base can connect to the router over either 2.4GHz or 5GHz, according to TechRadar’s specification table. If the 2.4GHz network is weak at the front door, the camera’s connection may be a more immediate concern than the base’s dual-band capability.

TechRadar names the Ring Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) as an alternative with color night vision and no hub requirement, alongside a subscription trade-off, and the Eufy Video Doorbell C31 as a closer no-monthly-fee option with a quick-release battery; the reviewer says a HomeBase is recommended to get the most from the latter. Those are the reviewer’s characterizations, not a current head-to-head test. Verify the exact generation, storage options, plan requirements, and prices before comparing them.
