AOL turned 40 in 2025, tracing its roots to a Virginia online service launched in 1985. The anniversary drew no clearly documented, prominent public campaign in the sources reviewed, so “quietly” is best read as an observation—not proof that AOL held no private or limited celebration.
When was AOL founded?
The company that became AOL began as Quantum Computer Services. TIME dates its founding to May 24, 1985, and reports that it took the name America Online in 1991. AOL’s current About page likewise says its small online service launched in Virginia in 1985, initially serving Commodore 64 users. Together, those accounts make 2025 the company’s 40th anniversary year; they do not establish an official anniversary event date or schedule.

TIME’s 2015 retrospective describes the service’s early growth from a few thousand members to more than 100,000. That history helps explain why AOL’s story is larger than the later image of a ubiquitous internet provider: it was part of the early expansion of consumer online services.
Why AOL became part of everyday internet life
AOL’s account of its own rise centers on the experiences that made getting online feel social and accessible. Its retrospective recalls trial CDs, dial-up connections, chat rooms, email, instant messaging, AIM buddy lists, and the “You’ve Got Mail” notification. TIME’s historical account offers a separate view of the company’s early growth, while AOL’s About page presents these familiar features as part of its corporate memory.

AOL says it mailed one billion free-trial CDs. That is the company’s retrospective figure, not an independently audited count. The discs became a conspicuous symbol of the period when internet access was introduced to households one computer and one connection at a time. AOL’s About page also calls the modem sound “The dial-up screech” and frames its current work with the question, “Does this make your day easier?”
What “quietly” means—and what it does not
No prominent public campaign specifically marking the May 2025 anniversary appears in the broad public searches reflected in available reporting. That supports describing the milestone as quiet in public view, but it cannot establish that AOL deliberately chose not to celebrate or that no internal, local, or limited event took place. No named person’s statement about the 40th anniversary itself is established in the cited material.

AOL’s current About page includes self-reported audience figures, including 30 million monthly AOL users and 3 million daily email checkers. It gives no methodology in the retrieved text, and its email statements are inconsistent on their face: the same page also describes “The inbox 8 million people open every morning.” These figures should be treated as AOL’s claims, not independent measurements or evidence of the scale of an anniversary celebration.

AOL’s dial-up internet service ended on September 30, 2025, after the anniversary year had begun. The Associated Press reported that AOL email continued, alongside subscriptions for identity protection and technical support. The end of dial-up access was a later service change, not the anniversary itself—and it did not mean AOL or AOL email disappeared.
