Anthropic and OpenAI both sell AI services to businesses and individuals, but their public disclosures emphasize different customer channels. OpenAI reports a broad mix of subscriptions, API usage, advertising, and commerce; Anthropic’s cited announcements foreground enterprise and developer adoption. Their latest announced financing snapshots are also not directly equivalent: Anthropic reported a $65 billion Series H, while OpenAI reported $122 billion in committed capital. Neither funding nor valuation establishes profitability or product superiority.

How Anthropic and OpenAI make money

Anthropic: Claude for businesses, developers, and individuals

Anthropic describes Claude as serving businesses, developers, and individual users through enterprise deployments, API access, Claude for Work, and Claude Code. Its announcements emphasize business and developer adoption, but do not provide an audited breakdown of revenue by channel.

Anthropic reported $14 billion in run-rate revenue in its February 2026 Series G announcement. In its May 2026 Series H announcement, it said run-rate revenue had crossed $47 billion earlier that month. These are company-reported run-rate measures, not audited annual revenue. Anthropic’s Series H announcement and Series G announcement describe the figures.

OpenAI: subscriptions, APIs, advertising, and commerce

OpenAI describes a multi-channel model: consumer and workplace subscriptions, usage-based API access, and a free tier supported by advertising and commerce. Its stated principle is that “Our business model should scale with the value intelligence delivers.” That is OpenAI’s own framing, not an independent assessment. Its business-model explanation also reports historical annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $2 billion in 2023, $6 billion in 2024, and more than $20 billion in 2025. Those are company-reported historical ARR figures, not a comparable audited revenue breakdown.

Who uses their products—and what the counts mean

OpenAI reports consumer reach and business adoption

In its 2026 funding announcement, OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users and over 50 million subscribers. It also said enterprise represented more than 40% of revenue. These measures describe different things: weekly active users are not subscribers, and neither is a count of business organizations.

Separately, OpenAI said in 2025 it had more than one million business customers. It defined these as organizations actively paying for business use through ChatGPT for Work or direct consumption of its developer platform. The same announcement reported more than seven million ChatGPT for Work seats. A customer organization, a seat, and a consumer subscriber are not interchangeable units. See OpenAI’s business-customer announcement and 2026 funding announcement.

Anthropic emphasizes enterprise accounts

Anthropic reported more than 500 customers spending over $1 million annually on an annualized basis in its February 2026 Series G announcement. This is a count of large-spending customers, not a total customer count, and the annualized basis should not be read as audited realized annual spend. Anthropic’s May announcement described continued enterprise adoption but did not provide a directly equivalent count.

The available disclosures therefore support a difference in reported emphasis—not a clean consumer-versus-enterprise split. OpenAI reports very large consumer reach alongside growing business use; Anthropic’s cited releases foreground enterprise and developer adoption. The companies use different definitions and do not publish an independently harmonized dataset, so these figures cannot establish market share, comparable customer value, or revenue quality.

Latest announced funding and valuation snapshots

Company and announcement Reported financing Post-money valuation Important qualification
Anthropic, Series H — May 28, 2026 $65 billion $965 billion Anthropic said the round included $15 billion of previously committed hyperscaler investments, including $5 billion from Amazon.
Anthropic, Series G — February 12, 2026 $30 billion $380 billion The announcement said the round included part of previously announced Microsoft and NVIDIA investments.
OpenAI, latest round described in its 2026 announcement $122 billion in committed capital $852 billion OpenAI characterizes the amount as committed capital; it should not be silently treated as the same financing measure as another company’s reported round size.

These are company-announced figures from different dates and financing structures. Anthropic’s Series H is the largest stated round amount among these announcements; OpenAI’s stated committed-capital figure is larger. The amounts should not be ranked as though they were identically defined cash raised. Valuations are post-money snapshots, not evidence of profitability, operating costs, or product performance. Cloud and infrastructure relationships

Anthropic says AWS is its primary cloud provider and training partner, while Claude is available through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. OpenAI and Microsoft said in their February 27, 2026 joint statement that their commercial and revenue-share relationship remained unchanged and Azure remained the exclusive cloud provider for stateless OpenAI APIs.

These statements concern different arrangements and scopes. Anthropic’s list of cloud availability does not mean every service or workload is distributed equally across providers; OpenAI and Microsoft’s exclusivity statement is specifically about stateless OpenAI APIs. Read the companies’ statements for their stated terms: Anthropic and OpenAI and Microsoft.

What the comparison can—and cannot—show

The public announcements establish reported revenue channels, selected adoption metrics, financing amounts, and named infrastructure relationships. They do not provide comparable audited revenue breakdowns, operating margins, profitability, customer retention, or revenue per customer. Run-rate figures, user counts, customer counts, committed capital, and valuations answer different questions; none alone establishes which company has the stronger or more durable business.
