Anthropic says it will commit $150 million over three years to expand access to Claude across more than 15 federal agencies participating in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The support is intended for several hundred research projects and includes Claude, Claude Code, API credits, agency and laboratory collaboration, and training and technical assistance—not simply chatbot access.

What Anthropic says the three-year commitment will provide

In its October 8, 2026 announcement, Anthropic described a support package for science work under the Genesis Mission. It named NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation among the agencies expected to participate. The company did not say that every researcher or agency will receive the same access or amount of support.

  • Claude and Claude Code: access intended to support work across several hundred Genesis Mission research projects.
  • API credits: credits for projects that use Claude through the API.
  • Scientific collaboration: work with agencies and national laboratories to identify and address science priorities.
  • Practical assistance: training, onboarding, and technical support for scientists.

Anthropic specifically cited fusion energy and quantum computing as priorities. Its earlier DOE partnership also described potential work in energy, biological and life sciences, and scientific productivity.

How this builds on Anthropic’s earlier DOE partnership

Anthropic and DOE announced a multi-year Genesis Mission partnership on December 18, 2025. At the time, Anthropic said the collaboration could affect work across all 17 national laboratories and outlined possible uses including AI agents, Model Context Protocol servers connected to scientific tools, and Claude Skills for specialized workflows. Those were descriptions of the earlier partnership, not a detailed rollout plan for the new $150 million commitment.

In that December announcement, Anthropic Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan said: “The Genesis Mission is the sort of ambitious, rigorous program where that belief gets tested.” The comment referred to the earlier partnership.

How the $150 million figure fits with other Genesis Mission announcements

The October commitment is one part of a wider set of Genesis Mission support. These figures come from separate announcements, with different dates and categories; they should not be treated as a single comparable funding total.

Announcement Figure and scope What the figure describes
Anthropic, October 8, 2026 $150 million over three years Anthropic’s commitment for Claude-related support to participating agencies and research projects.
Google, October 8, 2026 $150 million A separate company commitment listed in the White House’s October 8 fact sheet.
DOE, July 22, 2026 More than $800 million Consortium partner support reported by DOE at that earlier date, spanning contribution types such as compute and credits, AI models, cloud infrastructure, scientific expertise, research partnerships, and direct funding.

The White House’s October 8 fact sheet presents the broader federal and partner context, while DOE’s July 22 announcement describes the earlier consortium figure. The consortium total is not an additional Anthropic contribution, and the categories are not limited to cash.

What the announcement does not yet specify

Anthropic’s announcement does not provide an agency-by-agency allocation of the $150 million, identify the several hundred projects, or give a detailed deployment calendar. It also reports no independently assessed scientific outcomes from this new commitment. The announcement establishes what Anthropic says it intends to support; it is not evidence that the funds, tools, or resulting science have already been delivered.
