Anthropic is owned by its stockholders, but its complete current shareholder list and ownership percentages are not publicly established in the sources cited here. Amazon has announced a minority ownership position, while Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust holds special stock with a role in electing and removing directors. Those arrangements make ownership, governance and commercial partnership distinct questions.

Who owns Anthropic?

Anthropic is a privately held Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), so its economic owners are its stockholders. The company says its stated public benefit is the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for humanity’s long-term benefit. That purpose does not make the public, the Trust or any other stakeholder the company’s owner.

Anthropic’s public company and governance disclosures do not provide a complete, current cap table—the full list of shareholders and their stakes. They therefore do not establish every current owner, how much each owns, or which investor holds the largest percentage. See Anthropic’s company page and its transparency commitments.

Does Amazon own Anthropic?

Amazon has said it would invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic and take a minority ownership position. That is Amazon’s description of its announced investment, not a current ownership percentage or a complete account of Anthropic’s shareholders. The announcement does not say Amazon owns Anthropic outright. Amazon’s announcement also describes a commercial and infrastructure relationship: AWS as Anthropic’s primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, use of AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips, and availability of Anthropic models through Amazon Bedrock.

These arrangements show why an investment, a cloud partnership and ownership control should not be treated as interchangeable. Amazon’s announcement identifies a minority stake, but it does not establish that Amazon runs Anthropic’s day-to-day operations or controls the company’s board.

What role does the Long-Term Benefit Trust play?

The Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) is a governance body, not Anthropic’s sole economic owner. Anthropic’s September 19, 2023 announcement says the Trust holds special Class T stock created in the company’s charter. That stock gives the Trust authority to elect and remove board members according to time- and funding-based milestones, with a majority intended to be reached within four years. Anthropic says the arrangement is designed to help the company balance stockholder financial interests, affected stakeholders and its stated public benefit. Anthropic’s LTBT announcement describes the structure.

Anthropic also said that Series C and later investors elect a board seat, so investor perspectives are represented. The Trust’s special board-election role does not make it equivalent to an ordinary investor with a disclosed percentage of the company.

How do ownership, governance and partnership differ?

Relationship What it means here What public sources establish
Economic ownership Stockholders hold shares in Anthropic. Anthropic is stockholder-owned, but a complete current shareholder list and percentages are not established.
Governance The board oversees the company; stockholders and the LTBT have roles in board elections. The LTBT holds Class T stock with special election and removal authority under stated milestones.
Commercial partnership Companies may provide cloud infrastructure, computing capacity, model distribution or other services. Amazon has described AWS infrastructure and Bedrock access alongside its minority investment.

A partner can be strategically important without owning all, or even a majority, of a company. Likewise, a board-election right is a form of governance authority, not a disclosed measure of economic ownership.

What does Anthropic’s public-benefit status change?

Anthropic describes itself as a Delaware PBC. The company explains that directors of a Delaware PBC may balance stockholders’ financial interests with the corporation’s stated public benefit and the interests of people materially affected by its activities. This corporate form shapes the interests directors may consider; it does not transfer ownership to the public or reveal the relative stakes of private investors. See Anthropic’s explanation of the Trust and PBC structure.

What can—and can’t—the partnership details tell us?

Cloud and AI partnerships can include more than service purchases. In a January 17, 2025 statement, the Federal Trade Commission said partnerships between cloud providers and AI developers may involve equity, revenue-sharing, consultation, control or exclusivity rights in varying degrees. The FTC also identified potential competition concerns including access to computing resources, switching costs and access to sensitive business or technical information. Its analysis drew on information available to FTC staff through September 2024 and public information through January 2025; it is context about partnership structures, not a current Anthropic cap table or a finding that any particular party owns or controls Anthropic. Read the FTC’s announcement of its staff report.

What is known about Anthropic’s board?

Board and trustee rosters can change, so a dated company announcement and a live governance page should not be combined as though they show one simultaneous roster. Anthropic’s company page lists a board and LTBT trustees, while its February 13, 2026 announcement about Chris Liddell gives a separate, dated board snapshot. The pages list different names; consult Anthropic’s current company page for its live roster, and treat the Liddell announcement as a snapshot from its publication date.
