Anthropic’s October 14, 2026 launch adds public-beta OpenTelemetry (OTel) export for Claude Managed Agents, the Messages API and Claude SDKs. Organizations can now route Claude spans into the same observability systems used by the rest of an application, including traces for model calls, tool use, MCP servers, latency, token counts and request identifiers.
What Anthropic launched
The Claude Platform now exports OpenTelemetry traces for Messages API requests and Claude Managed Agents sessions. Anthropic says the export can send telemetry to any OTel-compatible tool, allowing teams to follow an agent’s steps alongside their application traces. Existing Claude Code or Cowork telemetry can also be viewed with Claude Platform agent activity.

The feature is a public beta, announced October 14, 2026. Beta status matters: Anthropic’s span names and attributes follow the OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions plus Anthropic-specific fields, but the span reference identifies convention commit e57c543b (Anthropic, September 24, 2026) and warns that names and attributes may change.
What the traces show
Depending on the surface and content mode, spans can describe:

Claude SDK spans can be combined with your own application traces, so a request can be followed from an inbound service call through SDK activity and into Claude model or tool operations.

Anthropic’s 2026 release notes list SDK tracing for Python, TypeScript, C#, Go, Java, PHP and Ruby. Console API tracing applies to clients using the API, while SDK tracing applies to code that actually uses one of those SDKs. Teams can enable either approach or both.

How to configure API trace export
- Have an organization administrator open the Claude Console and add an OpenTelemetry destination.
- Enter the destination’s OTLP/HTTP endpoint. Anthropic documents HTTPS transport, normally on port 443.
- Add the credentials required by the observability service as request headers.
- Select the destination’s content mode, choosing metadata only or full content where permitted.
- Use the Console’s delivery test, then monitor the destination state.
The Console reports one of four states: Healthy, Failing, No data or Disabled. A delivery attempt has a total ten-second timeout, including a resend without compression. If every delivery fails for 24 hours, Anthropic can disable the destination automatically. After correcting the endpoint, credentials or network policy, an administrator must re-enable it.

- Install the Claude SDK for the language used by the client: Python, TypeScript, C#, Go, Java, PHP or Ruby.
- Register an OpenTelemetry tracer provider in the application.
- Configure the SDK exporter and destination according to the SDK’s current tracing documentation.
- Choose the SDK client’s content mode and apply the same data-classification rules used for the rest of the application’s telemetry.
- Send a test request and verify that the SDK spans share trace context with the surrounding application spans.
SDK export is useful when you need end-to-end traces that include work before and after the Claude call. Console API export is broader for organizations whose clients do not all use an SDK.

Choose a destination by operational fit
Anthropic lists Arize AI, Braintrust, Databricks, Datadog, Grafana Cloud, Honeycomb, Langfuse, LangSmith, New Relic, PostHog, Sentry and Splunk as OTLP destinations. OTel compatibility is the common transport; the important differences are what each service does after it receives the spans.

The launch makes the transport portable; it does not make retention, residency, access controls or evaluation features identical across providers. Those properties remain destination-specific.

Metadata-only versus full-content export

Organizations handling HIPAA, FERPA or K-12 data are restricted to metadata-only export regardless of the selected content mode. For other organizations, exported content is stored under the chosen observability provider’s retention, access and geographic policies.

Content-size limits
Full-content spans hold up to 0.75 MB by default. Anthropic says that is enough for a 200,000-token English context under its stated conditions. A full 1-million-token context is about 4 MB, so it exceeds the default. When content is too large, Anthropic shortens it and marks the span with anthropic.content.truncated=true.

Operational limits you should plan for
- Best-effort delivery: exported spans are not guaranteed to be a complete record of API usage. Delivery can lose spans, and unsampled requests may have no spans.
- Not a billing ledger: use Anthropic’s Usage API when complete API-key usage accounting is required.
- Failure handling: a destination may be disabled after 24 hours in which every delivery fails; the ten-second total delivery timeout includes an uncompressed resend.
- Beta schema: span names and attributes may change while Anthropic’s OTel implementation evolves.
- Privacy exposure: full-content mode moves prompts and responses into a third-party observability system, where that provider’s retention and permissions apply.
A practical rollout plan
- Start with metadata-only export in a non-production or low-risk organization.
- Confirm that the destination receives model, tool and MCP spans and that trace IDs join correctly with your application telemetry.
- Set sampling, retention and role-based access policies in the observability service before increasing volume.
- Measure ingest cost and investigate delivery states, especially Failing and No data.
- Enable full content only for approved workloads that need prompt-level debugging, and document the applicable data-retention and residency decisions.
- Keep the Usage API in operational or finance workflows because trace export can omit unsampled or failed deliveries.
What this changes for Claude teams
Claude telemetry no longer has to sit apart from the traces of the services that call it. API-level export gives administrators a central path for Messages API and Managed Agents traffic, while SDK instrumentation lets developers connect Claude operations to application spans. The useful boundary is clear: OTel traces explain request behavior and agent execution; the Usage API remains the authority for complete usage accounting.
