Antenna on Smart TV: Fix No-Channel Scans and Improve Reception

Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the television’s ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT socket—not an HDMI port. Open the TV’s live-TV or channel setup, choose Antenna or Air as the tuner mode, and run an automatic channel scan. When the scan finishes, the TV saves the over-the-air stations it can receive at that antenna position.

If the scan finds few or no channels, first check the cable and tuner mode, then move the antenna higher or nearer a window and scan again. Menu names, tuner options, and channel availability vary by television model, software version, and location.

What you need before connecting anything

The basic setup is simple, but checking the parts first prevents the most common installation errors.

  • A television with a built-in over-the-air tuner and an antenna input labeled ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT.
  • An antenna with a compatible coaxial lead. A typical connection uses a 75-ohm coaxial cable. In one TCL external-antenna configuration, the cable is not included, so check your antenna package rather than assuming one is supplied.
  • A location where the antenna can sit high and relatively unobstructed. An indoor antenna can often begin near a window, then be moved while you test reception.
  • The television’s remote control, so you can open live-TV or channel settings and start the scan.

Do not use an HDMI socket for the antenna. HDMI carries video and audio from an external source such as a cable box; it does not feed broadcast signals into the TV’s tuner.

Identify the connector

A standard coaxial antenna connector is a round threaded fitting with a small center pin. It screws onto the matching threaded jack on the television. If your antenna has an older 300-ohm twin-lead rather than a coaxial connector, follow the antenna’s instructions and use the appropriate 300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter. Do not force a different connector into the TV.

What you have Where it connects What to check
75-ohm coaxial cable TV socket marked ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT The cable reaches the TV and both ends fit securely.
300-ohm twin-lead Use the supplied or specified 300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter, then the TV antenna socket The adapter is the correct type for that antenna and TV setup.
HDMI cable from a cable or satellite box A numbered HDMI input This is a separate box-based service, not a direct antenna connection.

Connect the antenna to the TV

  1. Turn the TV so you can reach its ports. Locate the threaded antenna input. Labels may be printed beside the port, recessed into the back panel, or shown in the television’s manual.
  2. Attach the antenna cable. Push the coaxial connector straight onto the jack and tighten the threaded collar by hand until it is snug. Avoid twisting the cable itself or overtightening the connector.
  3. Check the other end. Make sure it is fully seated in the antenna. If the cable is detachable, verify that it is connected to the antenna’s output rather than another socket.
  4. Power on the TV and select its live-TV source. The source may be called Antenna TV, Live TV, TV, or a similar label. It is different from HDMI inputs used by external boxes and players.

TCL’s external-antenna guidance summarizes the physical connection this way: “Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable (not provided) from the device to the ANT/CABLE input on the TV.” Your TV or antenna may use a different label, but the principle is the same: the antenna feeds the dedicated RF input.

Choose Antenna or Air and run a channel scan

A newly connected antenna does not automatically populate the channel list. The TV must search the broadcast frequencies and save the stations it detects. TCL Support describes the purpose of this process as follows: “A channel scan allows your TCL Android TV to find and save free over-the-air channels available through a connected antenna.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open channel or live-TV settings. Use the remote’s Settings, Menu, Live TV, Channels, or Broadcast control. The wording and location change by brand, model, and software version.
  2. Select the tuner source. When the TV asks whether the signal is from a cable service or an antenna, choose Antenna, Air, or the equivalent over-the-air option. Choosing Cable makes the TV search using a different channel plan and can produce an empty or incorrect list.
  3. Choose automatic channel search. Look for Auto Scan, Auto Channel Search, Channel Scan, or a similar command. A manual scan is unnecessary for a first setup unless your TV’s instructions specifically require it.
  4. Start the scan and leave the connection unchanged. Let the progress process reach completion. Do not disconnect the antenna, change inputs, or move the cable while the tuner is searching.
  5. Save or accept the results. Some televisions save automatically; others display a Done, Save, or Finish command. Return to live TV and use the channel controls to verify that the saved stations open.

There is no single universal menu path. Even two televisions running the same platform can place the scan under different headings after a software update. If a label in these steps is missing, search the on-screen help or the model’s manual for “antenna,” “air,” “channel scan,” or “auto program.”

Place an indoor antenna for the best chance of reception

Placement can change which stations the tuner detects. Start with the antenna in a high, open position near a window, then test other positions if the first scan is incomplete.

A practical placement sequence

  1. Put the antenna as high as is convenient and keep it clear of large obstructions.
  2. Begin near a window or an outside-facing wall.
  3. Keep the coaxial lead connected and run the automatic scan.
  4. If important stations are missing, move the antenna to another high or window-adjacent position and repeat the scan.
  5. Compare the saved channel list after each position. Keep the position that gives the most useful, stable result for your location.

Moving the antenna without scanning again does not update the TV’s saved list. A rescan is required after a meaningful placement change. Reception is determined by local broadcast availability and conditions at your address, so an antenna package’s advertised distance or a neighbor’s channel list cannot guarantee your result.

Troubleshoot a scan that finds no channels

Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure point, so changing several things at once makes the cause harder to identify.

Symptom Likely check Action
The TV says no antenna is connected The coaxial connector is loose or in the wrong socket. Unplug and reconnect both ends, tighten the collar by hand, and confirm the cable is on ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT.
The scan completes with zero channels The tuner is set to Cable instead of Antenna/Air, or the antenna position is unsuitable. Restart the scan in Antenna/Air mode. If it still finds nothing, move the antenna higher or nearer a window and scan again.
Only some expected stations appear Reception varies by position and local availability. Try another open position, rescan, and check a local reception map before assuming the TV is defective.
Channels disappeared after moving the antenna The old scan reflects the previous position. Run a new automatic scan after every major move.
The TV shows an HDMI screen instead of antenna channels The wrong input is selected, or a box is connected. Choose the TV’s Antenna/Live TV source. Select the HDMI input only when you intend to watch the connected cable or satellite box.

Confirm the tuner mode before replacing equipment

A cable-versus-antenna mismatch is one of the easiest problems to fix. Re-enter the scan settings and explicitly select Antenna or Air. If the television offers both “Cable” and “Antenna” under a single scan menu, do not leave the choice on an automatic default unless the manual confirms that it detects the connected source correctly.

Check the complete cable path

Inspect the antenna connector, any adapter, and the TV socket. A connector that looks attached but is not threaded onto the jack can prevent the tuner from seeing a signal. If the antenna uses a twin-lead, verify that the adapter is installed as directed. Try a known-good compatible coaxial cable only when the supplied cable is missing, too short, or visibly unsuitable; check connector type and the antenna instructions before buying one.

Use a second scan after every adjustment

The TV’s channel list is a stored result, not a live measurement of the antenna’s current position. After you reposition the antenna, return to the same automatic-scan command and allow it to finish. If the list remains empty in several reasonable positions, confirm that broadcasts are available where you live and that the television includes an over-the-air tuner.

How to choose an antenna for this setup

No single antenna type is universally best. The useful choice depends on your room, cable route, television connector, and the broadcasts available at your location.

Decision factor Indoor antenna Outdoor antenna
Placement Convenient for renters or rooms near a window; performance depends strongly on finding a high, open position. Requires an appropriate outdoor location and installation that follows the antenna maker’s instructions.
Cable reach Usually a short route to the TV; measure the distance before purchasing. Plan the route from the antenna location to the TV and verify that the supplied or separately purchased coaxial cable is suitable.
Space and appearance Small and easy to move while testing, but it must occupy a useful position. Uses exterior space and may require more installation planning.
Compatibility Normally connects through the TV’s antenna input with a compatible coaxial lead. Uses the same kind of TV input in the described setup, but follow the antenna’s specific connector and installation directions.
Expected result Depends on local stations and the antenna’s final position; no fixed channel count is guaranteed. Also depends on local availability and installation; no universal range or channel count is guaranteed.

Before buying, identify the local broadcasts you actually want and check a reception map for your address. Treat range claims as estimates rather than promises. Space, cable length, connector compatibility, and the ability to place the antenna high and open are more useful selection criteria than a universal “best” label.

When a 75-ohm coaxial cable is the right accessory

Buy a separate coaxial cable only if the antenna package lacks a suitable one, the supplied lead cannot reach the TV, or the existing cable and connectors do not match. Confirm that the cable fits the antenna and the TV’s 75-ohm antenna input. An adapter is not a substitute for checking compatibility: an older twin-lead antenna requires the specific adapter described in its instructions.

Antenna input versus a cable or satellite box

These are two different signal paths and two different TV inputs.

  • Direct antenna: The coaxial antenna cable goes to ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT. You select Antenna/Live TV and use the TV’s built-in tuner and saved scan results.
  • External box: The cable or satellite service connects to its own receiver, and the receiver connects to an HDMI input on the TV. You select that numbered HDMI source and use the box’s channel guide or controls.

Connecting a box by HDMI does not perform an antenna scan, and connecting an antenna to the TV does not make the box’s channels appear in the antenna list. If both are connected, switch between the TV’s Live TV source and the appropriate HDMI input.

What the TV can and cannot tell you about reception

A successful scan confirms only that the tuner detected broadcasts at that moment and position. It does not establish a guaranteed number of stations, a fixed reception distance, or availability at another address. Local terrain, buildings, and broadcast coverage can make two homes receive different channel lists with similar equipment.

If a station is absent, distinguish between two possibilities: the antenna did not receive it, or that station is not available at your location. Reposition and rescan first. Then consult a local reception map or broadcaster information rather than assuming that a different TV menu will create a signal that is not present.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Find the TV’s ANT, ANT/CABLE, or CABLE/ANT socket.
  2. Confirm that the antenna lead and any adapter match that socket.
  3. Connect the coaxial cable firmly at both ends.
  4. Place the antenna high and, initially, near a window or another open position.
  5. Open Live TV or channel settings.
  6. Choose Antenna or Air, not Cable.
  7. Run the automatic channel scan to completion.
  8. Save the results and test the channels.
  9. If channels are missing, move the antenna and repeat the scan.
  10. If the result remains empty, verify local broadcast availability and consult the TV and antenna manuals for model-specific compatibility.

The Bottom Line

The reliable sequence is: connect the antenna to the TV’s dedicated coaxial input, select Antenna or Air, complete an automatic scan, and rescan whenever you move the antenna. Reception depends on your TV model, antenna placement, and local broadcasts, so no channel count or range can be promised in advance.
